Tell Israel: Cool the Jets!

Former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton, who is wired into the cabinet of "Bibi" Netanyahu, warns that if Iran's nuclear program is not aborted by December, Israel will strike to obliterate it.

Defense Secretary Gates' mission to Israel this week, says Bolton, to relay Obama's red light, was listened to attentively, but will not be decisive.

Israel will decide.

One trusts Gates got into the face of Defense Minister Ehud Barak. For an Israeli strike on Iran, which Joe Biden foolishly said was Israel's call, would drag this country into a third war in the Middle East and destroy a policy that is visibly succeeding.

The Iranian regime is still reeling from the June 12 election, widely perceived in Iran and worldwide as stolen, and its tumultuous aftermath. Hundreds of thousands poured into the streets to protest the election, and then attack the legitimacy itself of the Islamic regime.

The government is gripped by its worst crisis since the revolution of 1979. Members of Iran's establishment with unimpeachable revolutionary credentials have declared the election a fraud.

Ahmadinejad's selection as first vice president of Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie, whose son is married to his daughter, and who has said some kind words about Israel, outraged conservatives.

Ahmadinejad was ordered by Ayatollah Khamenei to rescind the Mashaie appointment. For days he balked, then sent a curt note saying he would comply. Ahmadinejad further affronted the ayatollah by naming Mashaie his chief of staff.

Teheran is now ablaze over reports that scores of street protesters arrested in June may have been beaten to death in prison.

There is talk in Teheran, even before he has been sworn in for a second term, that Ahmadinejad may be impeached or ousted long before he can complete it.

America's policy of patience is working.

And as Ahmadinejad is Israel's bete noire, who Netanyahu cites as the religious fanatic who wants to "wipe Israel off the map" and will launch a nuclear weapon on Tel Aviv as soon as he gets it, why would Israel strike now, and reunite Iranians behind this regime?

Why does Israel insist that America has only five months to halt Iran's nuclear program, or Israel must attack?

Says Bolton: "(W)ith each passing day, Iran's nuclear and ballistic laboratories, production facilities, and military bases are all churning. Israel is focused on these facts, not the illusion of 'tough' diplomacy."

Now, Iran's nuclear "production facilities" may be "churning" out the low-enriched uranium of which it has produced enough for one test bomb.

But IAEA inspectors still have their eyes on this pile. None of the LEU has been diverted anywhere.

There is no evidence Iran has built the cascade to raise LEU to highly enriched weapons-grade uranium, or that the facilities even exist to do this. The Iranian regime has declared it has no intention of building nuclear weapons, indeed, that their possession would be a violation of Koranic law.

And the United States has not rescinded its own National Intelligence Estimate of 2007 that Iran, in 2003, abandoned its weapons program.

Israel has been saying for years an Iranian bomb is months away.

Where is the proof? Where is the evidence to justify a new U.S. war in the Middle East to destroy weapons of mass destruction that may not exist in Iran, as they did not exist in Iraq?

Iran may wish to have a nuclear deterrent, considering what happened to neighbor Iraq, which did not. But the idea that the regime, having built a nuclear weapon, would launch it on Tel Aviv and bring massive retaliation by scores of Israeli nukes on Teheran and other cities, killing millions of Iranians and all the leaders and their families of all factions of this disputatious people, seems like total madness.

For Israel to launch a war on such reasoning would seem to meet Bismarck's definition of preemptive war as "committing suicide out of fear of death."

America lived for decades under a threat of nuclear annihilation. We relied on a policy of containment and deterrence, outlasted the Soviet regime in a 40-year Cold War, and are now at peace with Russia.

Ahmadinejad is not so tough a customer as Stalin, Khrushchev or Mao, who talked of accepting 300 million dead in a nuclear exchange. Moreover, Ahmadinejad has no nukes, no authority to take Iran to war, and is looking like a very lame duck before his second term has begun.

And when one looks to U.S. and Iranian interests, they coincide as much as they conflict. Iran detested the Taliban before we took them down, and no more wants them back than do we. Iran is even more pleased with the Shia regime we brought to power in Baghdad than we are.

Iran needs technology to restore its depleted oil and gas fields, and an end to sanctions to restore an economy whose disintegration helped put the regime in crisis and lose it the support of its young.

Obama should tell the Israelis, "Cool the jets!" literally.

Well, it's no longer in doubt: Buchanan is off the rails. He states:
"America's policy of patience is working."
So, Buchanan regards the U.S.-funded insurrections and political opposition in Iran to be a "policy of patience".
By that measure, Hitler's invasion of Poland would be considered a "policy of patience".
Buchanan has forgotten what he wrote in his own book, if he actually did write it himself.
A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Right on! Your advice makes so much sense it will be shrugged off without a second thought by the Congress and the main stream media who are owned lock, stock, and barrel by the Israel lobby. At what point do we stop giving these warmongers several billion dollars a year to make war?

Ahmadinejad is a puppet and will always be a puppet. A little before this uprising in Iran an American television network took a poll from young Iranians in Iran and the majority of them said that it was there right to have nuclear power and nuclear arms. Out of all the people asked only two said that Iran shouldn't have nuclear arms because their leaders would misuse the wepons and start a war. One of those two people said that he would rather have a Iranian leader who dictates than a foreign leader who sets him free. The majority of the people interviewed said they were afraid when Iraq was invaded and the only reason America didn't invade Iran was because we are afraid of them and we know what they will do to us if we did. I don't agree with everything Mr. Buchanan stated but for Mr. Buchanan the article wasn't that bad. P.S. NOBODY says more foolish things than Sarah Palin.

As Far as Pat Buchanan, I think he understands more about Foreign History and much more about Government than Obama. Obama has done wrong to America and many understands as Buchanan does about the USA that Obama will destroy the USA. But I wonder why you Mr. Buchanan never became President? Perhaps it was because you were too Old? Its why Obama got picked believe it or not, because the majority of the voters were under 30. How would like help and who would endorse for the next President! I would be curious to know. I would endorse you if I knew things would improve, but I doubt it because many Conservatives are not as wise as you and those who were on the Republican party line were duped and so were those who voted on the Democratic ticket! For a bowl of pottage the best man got sold out! They thought Obama would be the best choice but in reality very few understood how he manipulated the Poor, ignorant and slothful Christians by Offering a 1000 dollars for a vote! And they still did not get it! It was reduced to $250. I like to ask you Mr. Buchanan, "How would you educate the Public to know who to trust and who to vote for?" Why I ask is, because the majority of the voters only saw the $1000 Dollar bill Obama promised. They never once checked out Obama's voting and standing record! If they did, many would have figured his mind out and know he was a bad dude, from day one! He does not stand for anything American at all! I feel Once a Muslim always a Muslim, once a slave always a slave, etc. Obama deceived the world! How would you change things? I think you would make a very Good President, but I hate to remind you, you advised Nixon and he was done in by the same Greed and malfeasance in his party too! The same fervor as Bush and now Obama! They sell out the Public, they have a hidden agenda. It was done to the best, convincing Americans via the Internet; and the world was telling the Voters how to vote in our own Country from outside the country! How would you change that? I would like to see the Internet closed down for the two weeks before elections and no Political harassment! so there would be NO outside influence especially from other countries! Because there were so many on the Internet and even Obama himself had a website that was influences votes and I still believe it was why the cost of Gas went up that whole time, making money from the sale of oil to influence the voters! These days there was more out there that is was false information concerning Obama than there was truth and it was what influenced many voters! I think that is where we have gone wrong using the Internet! Tell me how would you change the way the Internet is used in reference to voting? Because it has affected our country in the area of buying votes! I think they should make it illegal to sell votes and our Government has lost its Constitutional Credibility because our Own Country, leaders & Politicians with the help of the Media has influenced voters to the extent of selling out our Government by the uses of the media's falseness which also usurped our Constitution. Because Obama still has not proven his Rightful birth certificate and we feel we have been denied our Constitutional rights by his behavior, and we the People do NOT trust him or have any allegiance to this Government because of that! Its because of that I we also have no Hope for a decent Government, because its been shanghaied by the spirit of pure evil! Its why we now have to contend with Obama for 4 years! But I doubt it if he will make it to one year, because many African-Americans are beginning to understand that just because ones skin is Black does not mean his heart is for the black man. He's not for anyone but his own self! Pure evil! And once many more African Americans get smart, they will understand how they been deceived and manipulated by Obama! And they will want him dead! I don't see Obama living very long, just like the man he models his life after, he will also succumb to the same destiny! As go Abraham Lincoln, so will Obama! he thinks he won but he really lost! Because he could not keep his nay, a nay! He may think he got the dream but it will end up a nightmare and every man will lose hope because you cant have hope in death! The Death of the Constitutional Law! There is no life where a man has to lie to win the ring! His own will do the deed too!
