Leaks and Lies

WASHINGTON — For two months, the Obama administration has been skirting the truth about its inept response to the April 20 BP Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explosion and the resulting fire and oil spill. The O-Team claims it has been "on top" of this problem since "day one." Reality shows that both the leaks and the lies continue.

On June 15, President Barack Obama, master and commander of the teleprompter, tried using his first address from the Oval Office to convince the American people that his team was doing all that could be done in handling "the worst environmental disaster America has ever faced." It was, even his supporters agree, a failure.

It's not that the president and his speechwriters didn't try. He attempted to emote. He tried to express his anger at BP's "recklessness." Having previously likened the Gulf catastrophe to the terror attack of 9/11, he referred to "our brave men and women in uniform." He even described his plan for dealing with millions of gallons of petroleum spewing into the Gulf of Mexico as a "battle we're waging" and said the oil is "assaulting our shores and our citizens." He then went on to lay out his "battle plan."

By the end of Obama's blessedly brief remarks, it was apparent the only new resources he's committing to "fight" this "epidemic" — his words, not mine — are lawyers and about 17,000 National Guard members. He went on to "urge the governors in the affected states to activate these troops as soon as possible." The contrast between the number of uniformed personnel being sent to the Gulf Coast and the paltry 1,200 dispatched to help protect our southern border from a tidal wave of violence was inescapable.

So, too, is the evidence of political opportunism, egregious error and outright fabrication in what the O-Team claims to have done — and what it plans to do — in responding to the catastrophe. The very fact that Obama devoted nearly a third of his Oval Office remarks to advancing his cap-and-trade energy plan is proof that the administration still lives by chief of staff Rahm Emanuel's maxim: "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste."

Though Obama and his spokesmen steadfastly maintain they have been doing "everything possible since day one" to mitigate the consequences of the ongoing spill, it simply is not true.

Fox News is not alone in reporting on the administration's unwillingness to waive provisions of U.S. maritime law known as the Jones Act that bar foreign-flagged ships from transporting cargo or passengers between U.S. ports.

According to O-Team press briefings, Jones Act waivers will be granted when needed. This begs a question: Why isn't there a veritable fleet of oil-recovery, -skimming and -containment vessels from the Persian Gulf, the Philippines, China and Russia already at work off U.S. shores? And it's not just the issue of foreign ships; it's also a matter of American companies' being rebuffed after offering to help.

According to Obama, "mitigating the consequences" of this disaster for the "people of the Gulf" really matters. For decades, we have known that one of the most effective pieces of equipment in reducing shoreline damage from chemical and oil spills is floating containment boom.

On May 21, both of Maine's U.S. senators, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, wrote Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, Adm. Thad Allen, the national incident manager and the head of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, alerting them that miles of certified containment boom, manufactured by a company in Maine, was immediately available for overnight shipment to the Gulf Coast. Yet as of this writing, none of this critically needed boom has been shipped.

Attorney General Eric Holder's June 1 announcement that the Department of Justice will pursue criminal sanctions against BP may sound good to those who want to launch punitive expeditions, but it does nothing to stop oil from gushing from the seabed. And his promise that "every cent of taxpayer money will be repaid" from a $20 billion "escrow account" is completely without foundation because BP could be driven out of business.

Obama also used his Oval Office remarks to announce the appointment of a new head of the Minerals Management Service, the government agency responsible for regulating oil drilling and mining. One might expect the person appointed to this post to be someone possessing at least minimal technical competence. Instead, the president chose a career government attorney — a lawyer who made his "bones" as an assistant special prosecutor in the effort to bring down President Ronald Reagan over the so-called Iran-Contra affair. Obama should be glad there are no special prosecutors looking into his actions in the "Offshore Drilling affair." Yet.

You are correct that everything that reasonably can be done to mitigate this disaster should be done. If these claims are true, I would be very interested in knowing why. Prevention of the next disaster is also quite important. Undoing the GOP based culture of agency capture where the regulator is controlled by the regulated might be a good idea too.
On the issue of a president not letting a serious crisis go to waste, where were you when the the little man from Texas used the events of 911 to wage his war of choice in Iraq? I don't recall you being upset that he used 911 to go to war on a country that had nothing to do with those events.
I am not troubled by Obama continuing to push the cap and trade approach. This oil disaster is a symptom of the problem; we have an unsustainable demand for oil. Every president from Nixon on has talked about our need to stop importing oil. (Bumper sticker: Supporting Terrorism One Gallon At A Time...) Big picture thinking is part of the president's job description. (No, the invasion of Iraq shows little evidence of big picture thinking, unless the job is to hand over our money to Halliburton.) The long term solution is that we are going to have to move rapidly to an economy that uses a lot less oil, not "drill, baby, drill". Cap and trade is not the approach I would favor, but it is the one the corporations will permit us to pass. I would prefer a system of carbon taxes where all of the money is annually returned to the citizens like the Alaska oil money is distributed. Price slowly rises, money can be used to avoid the tax by buying more efficient gadgets. Perfect? No. Life isn't perfect, but this beats Cap and Trade and it sure beats what we are doing now.

Why Wasn't The Well Capped Like This In Week #1? Will the well be capped by Monday? Why wasn't his repair completed 70 days ago?. Can you image the Gulf today, had the well been capped 70 days ago and had the Obama Adminstartion let the local Governors address the spill? Cap the well in the first 10 days and start skimming immediately? Limiting the oil flow to days days and an immediate effort to "berm, boom & skim". Would the oyster beds be open today. Would the fisherman be back to work today? Would teh restaurant owners be visiting the fish markets every morning? Wouldf the tourists in Flroida, Alabama and Missippi even have noticed the spill? Would we even be considering a 6 month moratorium? What price is the Gulf paying for this mismangement, this incompetence? Read the web posts that suggested today's repair weeks ago ........

I've researched the Gulf Oil Spill extensively and posted my findings on my blog.
I believe I've documented an unnecessary 71 day delay in stopping the flow of oil into the Gulf.
Public documents and news reports show the Obama Administration had the plan, the people and the equipment used to “repair and seal” the well “on site” by May 2, 2010, day number 11 of the “Spill”. The well should have been repaired by Day 15.

Did you know that at least 80% of the oil that leaked into the Gulf did so after day 11.

You won't find my perspective on this story in the MSM … though I use the MSM as sources.

Example: The “device” used to seal the well, a device called a BOP (blow out protector) arrived “on site” with the oil recovery/drilling ship Deepwater Discoverer prior to May 2, 2010. This contradicts the “plumber's sketch” story floated to and by the MSM. The BOP is not, as is currently being claimed, “an experimental plug”.

Example: The BOP was designed and manufactured by Cameron International, and is a BOP model that was designed 10 years ago – the actual BOP is pictured in the Cameron Catalog and in my blog post.

Example: The manner of repair or “suggested repair” was discussed by both Admiral Allen (in his Conference call of May 1, 2010) and a lead BP drilling expert on May 2, 2010.

Example: The BP expert discussed the repair in some detail with the New York Times, the Times referred to the plan as “audacious” …

Query: If the mystery plumber is not simply a fiction created in an attempt to try to explain away or deflect questions like: “Why did you shelve this, the “successful repair” for 71 days?” When did that plumber communicate his “idea” and his “sketch” of the device used to affect the repair – remember the BOP was “on-site” on May 2, 2010 ….
