Gatesgate
There were so many examples of presidential mendacity on view Wednesday night that I had planned to itemize a few in this column. But since even the New York Times is challenging a number of presidential whoppers — for example, Obama's assertion that "If we had done nothing, if you had the same old budget as opposed to the changes we made, the deficit over the next 10 years would be $2.2 trillion greater" is pure deception. OK, the Times didn't use that word, but reporters Peter Baker and Robert Pear did say, "In fact, $1.5 trillion of those 'savings' are mainly based on an assumption that the United States would have had as many troops in Iraq in 10 years as it did when Mr. Obama took office. ... Before leaving office, President George W. Bush ... mandat(ed) the withdrawal of all American forces within three years. So Mr. Obama is claiming credit for not spending money that ... would never have been spent in the first place."
Congratulations to the New York Times. It's starting to seem that Professor Slughorn's antidote to the love potion has worked. If Obama is being that dishonest about the budget deficit numbers, how much can we trust his numbers on the costs of health care reform?
Though President Obama was at his smooth and polished best the other night, two aspects of his worldview came into sharper relief — his reflexive hostility toward and misunderstanding of business, and his reliable resort to left-wing fables about race relations.
Most Americans, unlike Mr. Obama, do not believe that a capitalist system is inherently corrupting. Is that too strong? Look at the president's explication of what goes on in the mind of a physician confronted with a sick child: "Right now, doctors, a lot of times, are forced to make decisions based on the fee payment schedule that's out there. So if they're looking and — and you come in and you've got a bad sore throat, or your child has a bad sore throat, or has repeated sore throats, the doctor may look at the reimbursement system and say to himself, 'You know what? I make a lot more money if I take this kid's tonsils out.'"
Oh, dear. For one thing, most internists and pediatricians don't even perform tonsillectomies. That's a procedure for which they would refer the child to an ear, nose, and throat specialist. But the larger point is that the man who is asking us to trust him to revamp a critical (and highly personal) aspect of American life is someone who sees doctors and insurance companies as villains, and seems to imagine that there exists some alternative government-dominated system in which apple-cheeked maidens will take your blood pressure and draw your blood for the sheer joy of it, not to earn a salary. And sandal-clad doctors will be freed from the stain of profit seeking to pursue their patients' best interests instead of their own.
It's been tried, Mr. President. Look north to Canada. Look east to Europe. Your new ideas debuted about 1945. Their cancer survival rates (the best metric of health care quality) are significantly below ours. Their facilities are less modern. Their contribution to new medical technology and drugs lags. Their wait times for surgeries and other treatments are significant.
And though his election represented, we are told, a great step toward a gilded post-racial future, President Obama at his press conference managed to take a giant step backward. Without having all of the facts or hearing from both sides, his liberal knee jerked in the direction of white racist cop. Worse, the whole Cambridge, Mass., police department was "stupid" to arrest Henry Louis Gates. Perhaps, but having read the police report, it sounds like Gates was itching for a fight. The point is that President Obama was so ready to take sides. Why? Well, he answered that: "... What I think we know separate and apart from this incident is that there is a long history in this country of African-Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcing disproportionately. That's just a fact."
Not quite. It's a contentious and emotional minefield. Yes, there has been harassment of blacks by white police departments. But that's hardly the whole story. Blacks and Hispanics also commit a disproportionately high percentage of crimes.
It seems the Obama presidency means we're mostly past white racism. As for reverse racism, it's still in fashion.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!! Get over it, lady. While I'm walking through Nordstrom's with my child actually making a PURCHASE, I still have to deal with middle-aged white women like you (for whom K-Mart is better suited for their condition) clutching their purses. And as for you, you're no better than the liberals. You took a relatively fair argument about the economy and then injected race at the last minute, in a most nonsensical manner. C'mon, regardless of what you think, what did Gates have to do with Obama's economic agenda? Seems like whites (and the conservative ones, no less) love to play the so-called race card as it's convenient to them, too.
That said, even the use of minorities didproportionately committing more crimes in not entirely applied accurately or fairly. If 18 people out of 100 is responsible for 36 crime for every 100, guess whos's STILL committing the other 64 crimes? Just because there's more of you doesn't excuse the fact that whites still NUMERICALLY commit more crimes than blacks; but it's the perpetuation of the black boogeyman that you all rely on to justify extralegal measures by law enforcement.
As long as you feel that you can profile me because I "fit the discription," I reserve the eclusive right to call you racist. and I will make sure I vocally make it known to my children to clutch their wallets when an old white woman walks past us in Lord and Taylor.

There's an old saying "The more you stir " " the more it stinks!" Apparently, the dude talking about an old white woman walking past them in Lord and Taylor and telling his children to 'clutch their wallets' is so full of hate and racism and like a lot of people like him, of all colors, teaching their kids how to 'hate people, period' is more than I can fathom. It's been proven that the black folks had the same opportunities as the whites (if they wanted to work, they had a job - one old company comes to mind "Slugger Bat Company), so it's time to move on and make America a cleaner and safer place to raise our children! Since 70's, America has gone backwards. Apparently, these people hate themselves for what they've done to themselves and are blaming everyone else for their ills! Far too many illegitimates, of all colors, have been born, lots of them diseased, because somewhere in their blood they were kin to Tom, Dick and Harry, and all of them slept with the one carrying a child or two or three! Imagine that?
As for Obama and his cocky attitude showing his true colors when he went against the cops in reference to the Black professor, he should have stated 'this wasn't his job' and moved on, but no, he wants to let people think he's so important, he can do or say anything and it'll be allright! This is definitely the wrong attitude!
TAXPAYING AMERICANS HAD BETTER WAKE UP! TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS BORROWED BY POLITICIANS, WITHOUT TAXPAYERS' CONSENT, AND MORE BEING BORROWED DAILY - AND FOR WHAT - 'JUST SO TAXPAYERS CAN CONTINUE TO 'SUPPORT' ALL THESE PEOPLE THAT'S BANKRUPTING AMERICA AND CREATING MORE TERRORISM IN AMERICA! THIS IS ONE MORE VICIOUS CYLE, ISN'T IT? DOESN'T THIS MAKE TAXPAYERS VICTIMS? IT'S CALLED 'DISCRIMINATION AGAINST HARD-WORKING TAXPAYERS!'
Meanwhile, millions of Taxpayers have lost their jobs! Wake up, America!

Regarding your "doozie" about our President saying the Cambridge Police Department is "stupid": you either did not directly hear his remarks, as I did, or you can't comprehend English, in which case you should not have a column.
His remark was about the ACTION of the policeman AFTER learning that the "suspect" was, in fact, a resident of the house, that he acted "stupidly". And why couldn't you have mentioned that the President, the very next day, did apologize to the ENTIRE Cambridge police force saying he used very poor judgment in his choice of words, or did you not hear that, either?
I can tell you highly disapprove of President Obama, but have you once thought that he is the President of ALL of America, including you, and he deserves our respect, even if we do not agree with him? I think President Obama is doing a terrific job, in spite of all the challenges, and a media that is looking only for something negative, and nothing positive.
Please, for the sake of our country, try to find something positive about our president and print it.
Thank you,

Mona, Mona, Mona....
There is no such thing as reverse racism. There is only racism. saying reverse racism is like saying irregardless.
Now that we have that poor vocabulary out of the way, Obama used a poor metaphor about a sore throat when discussing healthcare, but you further promote the poor metaphor by your lack of knowledge about healthcare.
I practice medicine.
The insurance companies create ever changing ways to not reimburse me for my hard work. it becomes a name game, not a procedure game. I receive no reimbursement for diagnosing a tooth abscess, so I diagnose gingivitis, which pays.
Medicare plays a little game where they will not pay an emergency department when a nursing home patient comes in, is treated and sent back, IF, the patient later develops a not previously diagnosed bed sore or urinary tract infection(UTI). The claim is the patient developed these under the care of the ED.
So, guess what? All nursing home patients treated in the ED are ALWAYS diagnosed with a UTI and a bedsore.
Doctors don't want to perform procedures that aren't necessary, but we do want fair reimbursement.
You make a point about healthcare in other countries being substandard. Again, you know not of what you speak.
I can receive a knee or hip replacement in India for 25% of the cost than here in the U.S. Same prosthesis, same western trained surgeons. I'm kept in a five-star hotel pre- and post-op, and treated like a king.
If I want the latest and greatest procedures done to my eyes, I'm headed to Germany.
Cosmetics; Mexico, Argentina, etc.
The U.S. isn't the best at everything. I am far from being a liberal, but I sure as heck am not a right-winger. How about turning healthcare reform over to the people who practice in the business everyday and leave the pundits and the politicians out of it.
