Arizona Wants To Fight

Share Comment

Just when we think Arizona should be getting the message, when widespread condemnation for its unconstitutional immigrant-profiling law should be putting its lawmakers on defense, out they come with more Draconian anti-immigrant measures. Just after the lawmakers claimed that their first crackdown will affect only undocumented immigrants, out they come with two new measures aimed specifically at legal immigrants and naturalized American citizens. There can be no doubt about it: Arizona wants to fight.

Some people want a race and ethnicity war in this country, and Arizona is itching to start one.

As if inviting demonstrations, boycotts and widespread repudiation with the infamous 1070 profiling law weren't enough, two new measures were introduced in Arizona recently to provoke even more outrage. First, the Arizona Department of Education threatened to go after teachers who have heavy foreign accents, including many recruited when the state was much more immigrant-friendly. And then, Republican Gov. Jan Brewer approved a measure that bans the state's schools from teaching ethnic studies.

To justify the latter, Arizona schools chief Tom Horne, a Republican running for attorney general, vilified the Tucson Unified School District's popular Mexican-American studies program, charging that it promotes racial discrimination — a perfect example of the pot calling the kettle black.

Using reverse psychology that convinced no one, Horne argued that ethnic studies programs promote "ethnic chauvinism" and that he is the one who is fighting discrimination. In the dictionary, next to the word hypocrite...

Latino students in Tucson are taught that Arizona was once part of Mexico and that they should be proud of the contributions their Latino ancestors made to the United States; in some warped minds, that's the equivalent of teaching un-American values.

Using language designed to alarm Americans about threats that don't exist, the legislation signed into law by Brewer bans state funding for schools offering courses that "promote the overthrow of the U.S.

government" and "promote resentment toward a race or class of people."

Of course, these programs do no such thing! They are about connecting students with their ethnic roots. In fact, what they do is promote tolerance for diversity. The only ones discriminating against "a race or class of people" are Horne, Brewer and the other Arizona Republicans who have declared war on all Latino immigrants.

Even "advocating ethnic solidarity" can cause Arizona schools to lose their state funding from now on. Arizona wants all new immigrants to dissolve in the so-called American melting pot, even though in the past most immigrants have been unwilling to do it.

Throughout American history, we have been proud to preserve and celebrate our very diverse ethnic roots. In ethnic communities throughout this country, people of many different backgrounds have been praised by politicians for the same "ethnic solidarity" that is now a problem to the politicians in Arizona. Obviously, their problem is with Hispanic immigrants. They fear we are "taking over."

Yet you would think that in the middle of the storm created by their first piece of anti-immigrant legislation, Arizona politicians would wait at least a few months before promoting other racist measures. But nah, not Arizona. It wants to lead the anti-immigrant movement.

Even a U.N. human rights panel charged that Arizona is displaying "a disturbing pattern of legislative activity hostile to ethnic minorities and immigrants." The backlash against Arizona is now international.

But the Republican extremists who run that state apparently don't care about the criticism. They are tired of hiding their fear-mongering agenda, and they are bringing it out in the open.

They are threatened by the growth of the U.S. Hispanic population, and what they want is clearly to turn back the clock on the civil rights Latinos and other minorities have struggled to gain in the past 50 years.

Acting like schoolyard bullies, Arizona politicians are itching to lead the fight to suppress the civil rights of Latinos. But there will be many more demonstrations, boycotts and even lawsuits against their mean-spirited measures. And like all schoolyard bullies, they eventually will get the beating they deserve.

Miguel, if you're going to continue on your barrage of accusations to Arizona, then you should really start with the Fed. gov. since the new legislation is but a carbon copy of federal law. Only difference here is that it initiates in the authority to the state gov. instead of the inept and obsolete fed. gov. authority.
Perhaps it might be very prudent to produce that tiny but extremely significant information in your article as it seems clearly dishonest to omit it.
Second, being raised in Cuba such as yourself, can you please tell me when they taught or where in the Cuban educational system are there classes promoting the idea that Cuba once belonged to Spain and that we should be proud and celebrate our Spaniard heritage??? Perhaps, I'm going senile at 38, because I don't seem to recall being taught that while at school in Cuba...I'm trying to understand in what logical way does it make sense to advocate for the celebration of a foreign nation rather than promoting national solidarity and pride...Perhaps only in the minds of such esteemed intellectuals such as yourself this actually makes sense...

"Throughout American history, we have been proud to preserve and celebrate our very diverse ethnic roots." Yet, much of your rhetoric suggests just the opposite. The idea that America is somehow less tolerant today than it was 50 or 100 years ago...
Man, your logic just flies all over the place sometimes.
It's too difficult to know where you're coming from on many fronts. Miguel, you are passionate about the Hispanic Community and we love you for it, but what are you talking about when you talk about impending race wars?
I'd agree that the Ethnic Studies prohibition needs some scrutiny. But c'mon, race war?
Hispanic/Latino history in Arizona is strong and ubiquitous. Whites and Hispanics have been living side by side there for a long time. The major problem I see is a complete unwillingness by you and others to start looking at things in terms of legal vs illegal. I do not believe that whites in Arizona have any wish to drive out "immigrants" or brown-skinned people.
Look, like a lot of commentators on legal/illegal immigration, you go a long way in promoting all the "virtues" of traditional Latin American life, but though you are very critical of your home country of Cuba, you are much less critical of Mexico. The truth is that Arizona is having problems with illegals. If that weren't the case, AZ would have had no reason for SB1070. Calling it "immigrant bashing" etc doesn't serve the issue, and it doesn't promote the kind of dialogue necessary to get to the bottom of what's ailing AZ.
If you can't resist infusing the debate with obfuscation, you won't have a starting point from which to begin a civil debate.

I agree mostly with the immigration reform of Arizonia. I don't care what nationality people are, or their skin color. Those who come here should do so legally.

Miguel Perez:

Once again you don't let the facts get in the way of your rant. I am a native californian. I have seen my
home state become infested with gangs & crime. Mexico should stop causing problems and start being
accountable for it's people. This problem has been brewing for over forty years in mexico. You are the
hypocrite. You refuse to accept the difference between legal and illegal. Govenor Brewer is doing what
she has to do. As for Calderon getting on the floor of the congress and critizing us , for years they have
told the US to stay out of their business. What hypocrisy.

I think the American people are awake! I am talking about the real american people, not these fake American's that pee on the flag during the day then use it to keep warm at night. Not the ones who cry for equality under my flag then march down American streets with their flag chanting "la Raza". I am not talking about those American's who used our great Nation to achieve an education and a career in politics only later to call me a racist when I want to protect my border and countryman. I AM TALKING about us, me and you. The real American's of all decent! The ones who made this country what it was before we were changed from people to voters.

I read an article this morning, written by a hispanic american traitor, that says he, mexico, and La Raza are ready for a fight. I am glad, because when it's over and you are on your back, I don't want to hear that you were not ready.

And when it's all said and done you will thank America for not taking your land. Again. Good luck in your fight, you are going to need it traitor!

And for the record---we the people are not fooled by your one sided reporting. You can run these kinds of pieces all day, and continue to omit the voice of support which is indeed the majority. We are not fooled. We know the popular opinion. And now we have a Gov with some balls---the weak politicians wince as they call this political suicide. On the contrary, Mrs. Brewer has just gained the popular vote and will make a fine 1st Female President of the US. Shame on you for your uneven representation. In fact cancel my subscription! You can use your own money to spew this anti American rhetoric.

Subj: Illegal Immigrant Trash in Arizona

Following are some pictures of left-behind trash from illegal immigrants from Mexico transiting through southern Arizona. This trash isn't cleaned up by the Border Patrol (or any other U.S. government agency), but state and county authorities are left with the chores, with the volunteered help of the citizenry.

You won't see this in the news media, since "it's Arizona's problem".

Hey everyone out there!

You really should come out here and see our Beautiful Sonoran Desert .

It's just gorgeous right now! We know you'd love it and maybe you can share what you saw with the rest of the country so they can love it too!

This is on an 'illegal super - highway' from Mexico to the USA ( Tucson ) used by human smugglers.

This area is located in a wash, approximately 1.5 miles long, just south of Tucson , Arizona . If a flood

came, all this would be washed to the river and then onto the sea!

It is estimated over 5,000 discarded backpacks are in this wash. Countless water containers,

food wrappers, clothing, feces, including thousands of soiled baby diapers. And as you can see in

this picture, fresh footprints leading right into it.

As we kept walking down the wash, we thought for sure it was going to end, but around every corner was more and more trash!

And of course the trail leading out of the wash in our city, heads directly NORTH to Tucson , then leads to your town tomorrow.

They've already come through here. Isn't Arizona just beautiful, America ?

Our desert has basically been turned into a landfill.

The trash left behind by people illegally crossing our border is another Environmental Disaster to hit the USA .

If these actions had been done in one of our Northwest Forests or Seashore National Parks areas, there would

be an uprising of the American people.....but this is the Arizona-Mexican border.

You won't see these pictures on CNN, ABC, NBC or the Arizona Republic Repugnant newspaper. Nor will they mention the disease that comes from the uncovered human waste left in our desert.

This information needs to be seen by the rest of the country.

Miguel,

I read your “Arizona itching to start a big fight” article and as a White American, I do not agree: I support Arizona for reasons that you and so very many others have turned a blind eye to seeing or understanding. Arizona acted out of desperation because your and my Federal government has refused to do its job, and our Congress has said “fuck you” to immigrants--illegal immigrants.

I would hope that Arizona's action will be a catalyst to bestir a Congress off of their shiftless, corrupt asses to do what they are supposed to do. That's the issue.

I condemn racists be they of any hue, color, or ethnic group, and when you come after me, I resent that, too, because you in fact are being racist.

My essay, Di Di Daw Daw Di Di (www.dididawdawdidi.com) will be a great read for you - only if you‘re interested, of course. I devote many pages to the immigration issue, and you should know them before your condemn me and others like me. I am a caring, understanding, person, and I really do have feelings for the unfortunates who are compelled to come to America illegally to seek sustenance. They are victims, not you. They are victimized by big business and greedy politicians.

President Reagan signed an amnesty a quarter of a century ago after Senator Kennedy promised to take up the work visa and immigrant visa issue. They Kennedy told Reagan to fuck off and broke his promise.

The issue festers today, and Calderon is not helping in any way when he has the audacity to critisize America and our laws while Mexico promulgates much more hateful laws against non-Mexicans.

You are defending (however you want to couch or parse your wording) overt racism by defending some (perhaps not all, I'll give that) of the various Hispanic/ethnic studies programs at schools, colleges, and universities that promote Aztlan, Mecha, and other overtly racist organizations.

We are, first and foremost Americans if we are born here, are naturalized and came here the right, the legal way. My wife is from Korea and she has relatives who have applied and are patiently waiting their turn, doing things the right way. My daughter-in-law is from Russia and she has relatives who are waiting their turn, doing things the right way.

I flat reject and resent people who tell me I have no right to be here. I am a veteran. I have been involved in a war that protected your rights. I had friends suffer, shed blood and die for you. You need to read my book to learn a bit.

I had relatives who sacrificed during the Korean war, for you

I had two uncles and an aunt who fought in WWII, and one shed blood for you.

My grandfather and his brothers were in WWI, for your freedoms.

"You old white people. It is your duty to die."

HISPANIC LEADERS SPEAK OUT

Augustin Cebada, Brown Berets; "Go back to Boston! Go back to Plymouth Rock, Pilgrims! Get out! We are the future. You are old and tired. Go on. We have beaten you. Leave like beaten rats. You old white people. It is your duty to die . . Through love of having children, we are going to take over.

Richard Alatorre, Los Angeles City Council. "They're afraid we're going to take over the governmental institutions and other institutions. They're right. We will take them over . . . We are here to stay."

Excelsior, the national newspaper of Mexico, "The American Southwest seems to be slowly returning to the jurisdiction of Mexico without firing a single shot."

Professor Jose Angel Gutierrez, University of Texas; "We have an aging white America. They are not making babies. They are dying. The explosion is in our population . . . I love it. They are shitting in their pants with fear. I love it."

Art Torres, Chairman of the California Democratic Party, "Remember 187--proposition to deny taxpayer funds for services to non-citizens--was the last gasp of white America in California."

Gloria Molina, Los Angeles County Supervisor, "We are politicizing every single one of these new citizens that are becoming citizens of this country . . . I gotta tell you that a lot of people are saying, "I'm going to go out there and vote because I want to pay them back."

Mario Obledo, California Coalition of Hispanic Organizations and California State Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare under Governor Jerry Brown, also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton, "California is going to be a Hispanic state. Anyone who doesn't like it should leave."

Jose Pescador Osuna, Mexican Consul General, "We are practicing 'La Reconquista' in California."

Professor Fernando Guerra, Loyola Marymount University; "We need to avoid a white backlash by using codes understood by Latinos . . . "

Are these just the words of a few extremists? Consider that we could fill up many pages with such quotes. Also, consider that these are mainstream Mexican leaders.

THE U.S. VS MEXICO:
On February 15, 1998, the U.S. and Mexican soccer teams met at the Los Angeles Coliseum. The crowd was overwhelmingly pro-Mexican even though most lived in this country. They booed during the National Anthem and U.S. flags were held upside down. As the match progressed, supporters of the U.S. team were insulted, pelted with projectiles, punched and spat upon. Beer and trash were thrown at the U.S. players before and after the match. The coach of the U.S. team, Steve Sampson said, "This was the most painful experience I have ever had in this profession."

Did you know that immigrants from Mexico and other non-European countries can come to this country and get preferences in jobs, education, and government contracts? It's called affirmative action or racial privilege. The Emperor of Japan or the President of Mexico could migrate here and immediately be eligible for special rights unavailable for Americans of European descent. Recently, a vote was taken in the U.S. Congress to end this practice. It was defeated. Every single Democratic senator except Ernest Hollings voted to maintain special privileges for Hispanic, Asian and African immigrants. They were joined by thirteen Republicans. Bill Clinton and Al Gore have repeatedly stated that they believe that massive immigration from countries like Mexico is good. They have also backed special privileges for these immigrants.

Corporate America has signed on to the idea that minorities and third world immigrants should get special, privileged status. Some examples are Exxon, Texaco, Merrill Lynch, Boeing, Paine Weber, Starbucks and many more.

DID YOU KNOW?:
Did you know that Mexico regularly intercedes on the side of the defense in criminal cases involving Mexican nationals? Did you know that Mexico has NEVER extradited a Mexican national accused of murder in the U.S. in spite of agreements to do so? According to the L.A. Times, Orange County, California is home to 275 gangs with 17,000 members; 98% of which are Mexican and Asian. How's your county doing?

According to a New York Times article dated May 19, 1994, 20 years after the great influx of legal immigrants from Southeast Asia, 30% are still on welfare compared to 8% of households nationwide. A Wall Street Journal editorial dated December 5, 1994 quotes law enforcement officials as stating that Asian mobsters are the "greatest criminal challenge the country faces." Not bad for a group that is still under 5% of the population.

Is education important to you? Here are the words of a teacher who spent over 20 years in the Los Angeles School system. "Imagine teachers in classes containing 30-40 students of widely varying attention spans and motivation, many of whom aren't fluent in English. Educators seek learning materials likely to reach the majority of students and that means fewer words and math problems and more pictures and multicultural references."

WHEN I WAS YOUNG:
When I was young, I remember hearing about the immigrants that came through Ellis Island. They wanted to learn English. They wanted to breathe free. They wanted to become Americans. Now too many immigrants come here with demands. They demand to be taught in their own language. They demand special privileges--affirmative action. They demand ethnic studies that glorify their culture.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mexican President Calderon, who cannot contain the widespread violence in his own country and whose own laws deal harshly with illegal immigrants into Mexico, drank Obama Kool-Aid and insulted Americans by criticizing Arizona's new law dealing with illegal immigrants which he claims, like Obama, will result in discrimination. Further he suggested our government reinstate the automatic weapons band which expired in 2004 which he claims coincided with a sudden rise in drug cartel violence in Mexico. Calderon says weapons confiscated in Mexico are mostly American-made, thus blaming America as the main source of firearms used by drug cartels to murder innocent citizens as well as Mexican government and police officials. Multiple free passes to Mr. Calderon, who it appears was coached by Mr. Obama as to what he should say to Congress and the American people---think amnesty and gun control (criminals win with both don't they?). Mr. Calderon's government will jail any illegal immigrant for a minimum of two years---he gives no free passes. He misrepresents the source of firearms in Mexico and the fact that firearms are not the cause of violence—criminals are. The bigger picture is that Mr. Calderon has no business exporting his hypocrisy to America and is not welcome here.

Dear Mr. Perez,

Your argument to justify illegals being in this country is that there is a demand for their labor...with that logic, you could also justify the importing of illegal drugs because there is a demand for the same. Illegal is just that..illegal.

At the present time, the California school system is rated at the bottom of all state systems in terms of performance; no surprise, in San Diego County 25% of the students are learning English as a second language. The high dropout rate amongst Hispanic students also makes a greater investment in their education unwise.

Since California is rapidly becoming the new Greece...while the weather is great here, it is time for productive Americans to look to consider moving to another state. The state goverment here is dominated by radical liberals and as in Greece, protestors will be soon be seen in the state when benefits are reduced. (See Teachers' Union)

Arizona has taken a courageous step forward, but with 500,000 illegals in thate state, I will continue to shop for a"safe haven state," if there is such a thing left.

Where is the pride in Mexico? Why don't these people make go back and make Mexico into a great country? With the Mexico oil running out, California should be ready for an invasion....

Don't know where you get off with your comments in your article. First of all read the law! It has specific language in it preventing racial profiling. Second, the law is not unconstitutional- that is for the courts to decide; not a writer.
Lets look st some facts that you seem to leave out- Arizona is having a very difficult time with ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS; just as California is experiencing. Did you hear about the Arizona rancher that was murdered near the border by illegals? All of the kidnappings and murders in Phoenix? Didn't mention that in your collumn did you? What about the illegals getting free education, free health care, free lunches for their illegal children at school. Who pays for all of that Miguel? We do. All of the people, including immigrants ,that reside here LEGALLY. You don't seem to realize,as many in your camp, that most Americans are not against immigrants- just ILLEGAL immigrants! Why is it that you and people that think like you can't differentiate between immigration and illegal immigration?
Been to an emergency room lately Miguel? I have. They are overcrowded with illegals as they have figured out that they can go there to get free helath care and not get deported.
The only one I see racist is you- insinuating that all non-hispanics are against immigration.Three of my grandparents are immigrants- LEGAL immigrants!
You suggest that people want to start a race and ethinicty war in our country. Not true. We are at war with illegal immigration, not any ethnicity or race. In this economy, some of our states are on the verge of bankruptcy; in part due to the amount of illegal immigrants that they support. A recent study showed that the millions of illegal immigrants costs the state of Califonia $30 billion annually. All of Californians, including legal immigrants, are bearing this cost.
This new Arizona law gives that state the power to do what the federal government has not done- enforce our borders. Every nation has that right Miguel. Ever look into Mexico's immigration laws and penalties for being there illegally? Maybe you should as they are much stringent than the US.
I, like many others support Arizona and it's new law and hope the entire country gets on the band wagon.

It is difficult to understand how some people "want a race and ethncity war" in this country by simply enforcing our existing immigration laws and maintaining the security of our borders. As a legal and loyal citizen of this country, Mr. Perez, you should want for our country what every other country in the world enforces: a secure border. Your dialogue is inflammatory and your patriotism questionable when your concern is greater for people who illegally enter this country than for your fellow Americans. Ron
