Marion Barry and the Left's Hatred of Asian Entrepreneurs

Marion Barry's mouth set him up. The disgraced former mayor of Washington, D.C., who was caught on tape in a 1987 crack cocaine sting, made an even bigger disgrace of himself and his city on Tuesday. Celebrating a Democratic primary victory, the city councilman attacked small businesses owned by "Asians" in his district. Then the race-baiting clown doubled down.

Barry told supporters in D.C.'s Ward 8: "We got to do something about these Asians coming in and opening up businesses and dirty shops. They ought to go." Once pushed out, Barry promised, he would replace the foreign invaders with "African-American business people." Barry then took to the social networking platform Twitter to expound on the perils of "dirty" Asian shops in his neighborhood.

As documented by my Twitter curation start-up, Barry posted photos of supposedly hazardous stores — including Chinese restaurants surrounded not by trash or toxic waste, but by Plexiglas barriers and reinforced doors. Barry explained that Asian-owned businesses that had the audacity to protect themselves from crime were "lowering standards" in his constituents' communities.

In Barry's bizarre world, law-abiding entrepreneurs who take steps to prevent robberies are the ones who threaten Ward 8's quality of life — not the armed thugs who threaten honest livelihoods in the first place. Vigilant wealth creators taking care of their families? Scourge of D.C. Profanity-spewing drug addicts inciting hatred against successful achievers of the American Dream? Model citizens!

Crazy Barry doesn't just need another round of rehab. He needs a reality check.

As a commenter on noted, 2010 Census data showed that "Asians made up 0.4 percent of the Ward 8 population (blacks made up 93.5 percent, a 1 percent increase from 2000). If anything, Asians are moving out, not in — the Asian population decreased 13.6 percent (from 301 people to 260 people) between 2000 and 2010. Meanwhile, the child poverty rate in Ward 8 sits at 48.3 percent, a 1.2 percent increase since 2000 — in contrast, the District's overall child poverty rate decreased 3 percent since 2000. Now that's what I call defying the odds."

If Barry's ignorant slurs had come out of the mouth of, say, former GOP Gov. George Allen of Virginia (pummeled for his "macaca" gaffe), there would be calls for his head from every civil rights organization in the Beltway. While the Washington Post reported that Barry "apologized," he showed typical fake penitence for "offending" Asians and claimed he was "taken out of context."

By "Asian," he blubbered to a local TV reporter, he didn't mean "Asian." He really meant all "those persons (who) come into our community, whatever color they are; it happened to be Asian initially." Put the prejudice pipe down, buddy.

Instead of showing true remorse, Barry dug in deeper with even more divisive, entitled and militant us vs.

them propaganda: "We're spending our money there, and we demand respect," he told the Washington Post. "We demand they participate in community affairs. We demand they give jobs to Ward 8 people regardless of their cultural situation. That's as American as apple pie."

Spoken like a true racial racketeer.

But Barry's not alone. His incendiary rhetoric echoes other liberal black leaders who have long made a sport of scapegoating Asian immigrant entrepreneurs across the country. Just this February, Jeffery Muhammad, the veteran Nation of Islam leader in Dallas, lashed out at Asian-American business owners for being "just the latest in a long line of people who have come to this country — like Jews, Italians, Indians and now Asians — who have sucked the blood of and exploited the black community."

Just a fringe sentiment, you say?

Rapper Ice Cube, now a mainstream actor and comedian, penned "Black Korea" to demonize Korean store owners in South Central Los Angeles:

So they watch every damn move that I make.

They hope I don't pull out a gat and try to rob

they funky little store, but b***h, I got a job.

... So don't follow me, up and down your market,

or your little chop suey ass'll be a target

of the nationwide boycott.

And Al Sharpton, now a prominent MSNBC host, was caught on tape stoking hatred against Chinese-owned chicken restaurants and Korean grocers:

"We're the black chicken friers of the universe. We gonna go buy some Col. Sanders chicken. Then the Chinamen comin' and (inaudible) ... Koreans sell us watermelons. We eat watermelons all our lives. But they gonna come cut it up, put it in a bucket with a rubber band around it, and we gonna buy it like it's somethin' and we didn't know what it was."

Few dare to call out black racism against Asians. Those who do are met with nasty racial epithets, of course. Last year, when I called attention to flash mobs of black assailants in Denver, Wisconsin, Philadelphia and New York who were explicitly targeting Asian students and elderly Asian women for brutal assaults, my e-mail box filled with vitriol:

"(D)oes your family still live in poverty? Not anymore, since you married into the tribe ME LOVE YOU LONG TIME GI."

"Shut up whore."

President Obama, commander-in-chief of post-racial America, was unavailable for comment.

"The progressives fought for your rights so an asian woman could stand up and make a loud fool of herself. You would represent your own worst interests. That's how dumb you are."

That quote comes from a response to Malkin's last article. Everybody is post-racial but those who view this columnist (and others) not as a person, or a woman, but as an "asian woman". Would that responder call a black woman "dumb"? The haters are very much alive and stereotyping as fast as they can. Their address has moved left, though. The left's search for someone to blame and hate is a national shame.

Re: Tom

You really need to take that reading comprehension class I recommended, taking things out of context and not understanding meanings, then twisting them to your own needs is so right wing conservative, and then, it's so You.
I can't reason with gameplayers or the unreasonable.

Adios, go play word games with someone who has more time.

Word games are your stock in trade, Bozell is an "old fart (today)", Chris is a "pompous ass" (last week), Malkin is "a loud fool" and "dumb"(this week). You don't like this game when confronted with your own words. You claim your own uncivil discourse thrown back in your face is used "out of context"; that is so left wing idealogue of you! How does one twist words like "fool" and "dumb"? Do they have some double secret meaning only you are privy to? Maybe you live in "Opposite World" and on your planet words like "pompous ass" mean "you are so deserving of respect as a fellow human being".

One liberal's mantra: I'm so perfect no one else will be granted dignity by me.

I read and heard Marion Barry's speech and I think this man deserves no quarter. "Kick him to the curb".
My only disagreement is Ms. Malkin's brush stroke is too broad. Most with "Left" leanings are also liberal. I zealously dislike extremists and crooks of either side. Mr Barry is an extremist and from other readings, possibly a crook, and should immediately be removed from his political post or whatever one needs to do to assure he has no power or influence. But please don't tar us all with the same brush.

Re: Tom
Do you know what word games (play) mean, obviously from you'r post, you don't, go look it up. It's a psych expression that means convoluting, twisting, and turning meanings to defend ones words, thoughts, deeds, or actions. You convolute everything, calling someone an old fart is clear as a bell, it is not comvoluted or dumb. Jeeesh, go take that class already.
Communicating with you is like arguing with a schizophrenic, go take that comprehension class and go look up word play, or games.
Conservative Mantra, if I confuse and convolute the issue enough, I'll get the vote

Your losing it. I convulate nothing, I merely re-type your words. You don't like them, change them. You don't get to define the rules of wordplay. Chris is one of the nicest posters on this site, and you called him a pompous ass. I wouldn't stand for bullies like you in grade school, and I won't now. You slur, I'll reprint, got it?

The worst thing about Barry isn't his own behavior. He's always been like that. What really gets me is that he was elected by the voters of his district to represent them.

Mr. Gunn, you raise a pet peeve of mine. All this inane arguing about sex education being taught in schools when in fact current events and politics should be required subjects from a very early age so everyone has a working knowledge of their voting power as citizens of America. Educate them young and we will have government reform. Aberrations like Barry wouldn't stand a chance among educated voters. Unless of course, the choice is the lesser of two evils, but even that can be overcome with an educated aware voter.

Does MSNBC have a minimum IQ score for its program hosts? They perhaps should. It's voyeuristic to watch Al Sharpton. I feel embarrassed for him.

Re: Steve
No, DC *deserves* people like Marion Barry. He's a thug, and the people who support him will suffer under a thug-ocracy. Just look what this kind of racist liberalism has done for Detroit, for Michigan in general, and for just about every other city run by a race-baiting, RACIST black liberal - financial disaster, slums, violence, a fleeing business class.
It's not his race or his skin color that's the cause of the problem, but it's a shame that one has to point that out. Its the racism and the cronyism that for lack of any other distinction, is concentrated in this demographic - no understanding of business, a perpetual sense of victimhood (and a willingness to continue claiming it to exploit it), a sense of entitlement, and politicians willing to exploit them for their own gain. Certainly the problems exist in other liberal controlled cities, but not to the extent that it does here and in Detroit.
So long as DC supports racists like this, and so long as Detroit allows criminals to deflect criticism and scrutiny with charges of "WAAAAACISM", they deserve the government they have.
I invite those businesses, Asian and otherwise, to come set up shop in my neighborhood. Thank you for trying to find the American way there and bring goods and services to an area that clearly needs it, but you have to understand that you were living in "Hyphenated-America", somewhat short of real America, and the rabid dogs that live there have been rewarded for biting anyone who doesn't look like themselves.
