The Supremes, Clearing Zuccotti and Voting “Present”

Dear Mark: The Supreme Court agreed to take the case determining the constitutionality of President Obama's health care law next year. Can the Supreme Court possibly affirm the legality of this overtly government overreach? — Healthcare Hoax in Hico

Dear Hoax: I'm not a lawyer, and although I've watched numerous episodes of "Law & Order," I can't offer a legal prediction. My hope is that Obamacare will be overturned. It's unfathomable that the Supreme Court would see Obamacare as anything but unconstitutional because of the mandate that every American purchase health insurance.

A mandate to help others get health insurance sounds warm and fuzzy, but let's looks at the reality of the law. Obamacare forces Americans by threat of financial penalties to purchase a one-size-fits-all health insurance policy designed by unelected bureaucrats. Today, over a year after the president signed this monstrosity into law, the details are still being written almost carte blanche by Health and Human Services with little to no congressional oversight. How Democratic of the Democrats to do this to the people.

Dear Mark: Man, it ain't right what the cops did to those protesters in New York City. Kicking them out of Zuccotti Park violates their constitutional right to live under tarps, bang drums and smoke weed against greed. Wow, I just made that up. Weed Against Greed — the new Occupy Wall Street slogan. Anyway, where was I? Oh, yeah, how could the mayor do that to us after all the publicity we've brought his city? — Doper Dave in Denver

Dear Doper: Thanks for finding time in your busy schedule to write. In case you haven't noticed, the publicity the Occupy movement stirred up across the country has not exactly been positive.

With hundreds of arrests, both physical and sexual assaults, widespread use of illegal drugs, ring worms, scabies and at least one death, the Occupiers have not exactly ingratiated themselves with mainstream America.

The problem with OWS is that they haven't expressed an end game for their protests and have offered no solutions for their complaints. They can't seem to answer what has to occur in our society for them to stop protesting. At least the hippies of the '60s were united against the Vietnam War and supported the civil rights movement. Until the Occupiers coalesce around a common message, they will be viewed by most Americans as a bunch of dope-smoking hippy wannabes who don't bathe. Bottom line: Protest all you want, but follow the rules and have a point.

On a side note, I found it mildly amusing to watch the protesters whine about being booted out of Zuccotti Park as if they were defending the Alamo. Who am I kidding? I found it totally hilarious.

Dear Mark: Our gutless president put off the decision on whether to allow TransCanada's Keystone pipeline to cross our country until after the 2012 election. Because he's beholden to his environmentalist base he voted "present" on this shovel-ready project that will create thousands of jobs. If he wants to create jobs, why won't he allow the pipeline? — Pro-Pipeline in Peoria

Dear Pipeline: You already answered your own question. Another of the administration's justifications for the delay was that it wouldn't actually create as many jobs as projected. Let me get this straight, an oil pipeline bisecting our entire country won't create many jobs, but building bridges sporadically throughout the country will save the economy? What exactly did they teach him at Harvard?
