Libya Remarks, Scaredy Dems and D.C. Prostitution

Comment

Dear Mark: President Obama finally made some serious remarks concerning the violence in Libya. Unfortunately, they seem to be too little too late. White House press secretary Jay Carney said a "scheduling issue" with Secretary of State Hillary was the reason for the delay in a presidential response. Once again, the administration has shown poor judgment in foreign policy. What would you do with Libya? — Answer Me in Anaheim

Dear Answer: Sadly, you're not kidding. The press secretary actually used "scheduling issue" as the excuse for Obama's delay in making a statement. A "scheduling issue" is when you're waiting on the cable repairman, not when you are president of the United States and a psychotic dictator is blatantly killing his country's citizens in cold blood.

Obama thought he was proving his leadership mettle in condemning Col. Gadhafi's actions when he said, "This same message, by the way, has been delivered by the European Union, the Arab League, the African Union, the Organization of the Islamic Conference and many individual nations."

This line alone is an admission that condemnation from the United States was slow and lagged behind the rest of the world. The president better revisit the definition of leadership. President Obama reacted faster to the union battle in Wisconsin than he did to the tragic bloodshed in Libya.

I prefer Ronald Reagan's approach to handling Libya, which was to swiftly bomb key military targets, including Moammar Gaddafi's residential compound, in response to the terrorist bombing of a Berlin disco.

President Reagan addressed the nation two hours after the bombings. In his address, he said, "When our citizens are attacked or abused anywhere in the world on the direct orders of hostile regimes, we will respond so long as I'm in this office." Obama must have missed that chapter on President Reagan.

Obama would have earned more respect if he had told the Libyan dictator: "If even one American is harmed by your actions, the next time you open your umbrella to speak to Libya, the only rain you'll feel is a rain of bombs from U.S. fighter jets. Gadhafi, you say you will fight to the death to stay in power. Well, let's just speed that process up a bit."

No charge for those two lines, Mr. President.

Dear Mark: The state Senate Democrats who left Wisconsin and Indiana are heroes in my book. Their battle against the union-busting governors is worthy of the chaos that is occurring in the respective state capitols. Why shouldn't they stay away until a deal can be reached? — Common Guy Illini

Dear Common: I believe those Democrats are cowards. As President Obama crowed, "Elections have consequences, and at the end of the day I won." With that in mind, the Wisconsin and Indiana Democrats need to put on their big girl panties, go back home and uphold their oaths of office. Then try winning the next election.

Dear Mark: This week, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid stated that now is the time to outlaw prostitution in his home state of Nevada. Is he finally concerned about some solid conservative values? — No Way in San Jose

Dear Way: I don't believe he came over to the conservative point of view with that speech. It's more like Reid wants to create a government monopoly. If Reid can successfully outlaw prostitution in Nevada, the only place left to legally screw people out of their money is in the halls of Congress.
