False Racism and the Texas SwaggerDear Mark: There was horrible policy during the Bush administration, and I didn't hear one word from you. George W. Bush taught us that deficits have their limits and can bring worldwide economic depressions. Did you approve of it, or did you just start to notice the terrible things government started when a black person entered the office? Do you call your vitriolic statements civil and intelligent? They're not — you simply take potshots at the black guy. I voted for Hillary Clinton; he's YOUR man. He provides a handy scapegoat for everything you see wrong. — Telling the Truth in Texas Dear Telling: I don't always call my statements civil and intelligent; I also call them pithy and clever, with a touch of sarcasm and humor. Your racism card is easy to play when the facts and figures don't jibe with your beliefs. I've been railing against the liberal big government ideology since the '80s. The skin color of the purveyor of bad government is of no consequence to me. Washington politicians of all stripes are the target of my wrath. and Barack Obama just happens to be president today. I don't know what color you are, nor do I care — but it appears you have missed the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr. when he said, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." Barack Obama was elected to the most powerful office in the world, reaching a level of equality where the "content" of his policies can be criticized just like the 43 white presidents who preceded him. Maybe you'd like to attack Rep.
I do not deny that racism still exists in our country. But until people like you, Al Sharpton, Eugene Robinson and white establishment liberals stop striking the match attempting to ignite the fire of racism where none exists, we will never completely live the Rev. King's dream. Dear Mark: Texas Gov. Rick Perry has barely entered the presidential race, and almost instantly his swagger has gotten on my nerves. We've already had one cowboy in the White House, and look at the trouble that got us. Texans are too cocky and arrogant. What gives? - Cool the Cowboy in California Dear Cool: It's laughable that people are whining about Perry's "Texas Swagger," although it's mostly the Northeastern media, liberal pundit types — so who cares anyway? The irony is that these same people worship their Yankees, Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins, etc. People love these teams because they have a winning tradition and a swagger. Yet when it comes to the highest office in the land of the most powerful country in the world, they don't want our leader to have a swagger. To quote Muhammad Ali, "It's not bragging if you can back it up" — and the best I can tell, the United States backs up what it says. Andrew Jackson had the swagger. Teddy Roosevelt had the swagger. John Kennedy had the swagger. Ronald Reagan had the swagger. Bill Clinton, uh, well, he had a sex problem. Dear Mark is a public platform for your enrichment and entertainment.
