Dear Mark: Jobs, Olympics and CockroachesDear Mark: A fairly large manufacturer in our community just announced that it is completely closing some time next year. The loss of jobs will have a negative impact in all areas of our economy. When will the president finally do something? — Free Falling in the Falls Dear Falling: President Obama will do something whenever his hard core left supporters think capitalism has suffered enough. So far, Obama has tried to spur recovery primarily by giving money, tax credits and COBRA extensions to people who are out of work. That is fine and dandy but has nothing to do with creating jobs, and the latest unemployment figures prove it. I agree with the letter congressional Republicans sent to the president this week encouraging bipartisan legislation that directly helps job creation through small businesses. The Republican proposals include a series of tax cuts, legal reforms and health care initiatives that would free up money for small businesses that could be used for expansion and further employment. I would take it another step and give all corporations tax cuts to keep manufacturers like the one in your community open. Dear Mark: You conservatives seem to be jumping for joy with the news that Chicago lost its bid for the 2016 Olympics. You should be ashamed of yourselves for letting your hatred of President Obama cause you to go against the United States. What have you got to say for yourself and your ilk? — Rats to Rio in Rhode Island Dear Rats: Don't paint all conservatives with the broad brush you folks like to wield. I, too, wish the United States would have been chosen to host the 2016 Games, but I can't deny that part of me was glad to see the arrogance of President Obama slapped down. Liberals are in a tizzy because the president and his wife failed miserably on the world stage and are now looking for a place to redirect their anger. Try getting your panties out of a wad about the Rio Olympics and into a wad about President Obama's indecisiveness when it comes to winning in Afghanistan. Watching our athletes win in our own backyard in 2016 would have been nice, but watching our boys and girls wipe out the Taliban and al-Qaida in Afghanistan would even be better. Go U.S.A.! Dear Mark: I just read an article in the Times of London about an artificial heart inspired by the infamous cockroach. The new heart would cost about $2,400, compared to the $50,000 price tag on the current artificial model. Even though I'm squeamish about bugs, wouldn't this discovery help reduce overall health care costs? — Bashful to Bugs in Beaumont Dear Bashful: Of course this cockroach idea will help reduce overall health care costs as well as improve quality of life. Free market solutions and innovations are the best way to help reduce the cost of anything. It appears there is a lot to learn from the lowly cockroach, although the only thing Congress has learned is how to scurry away when the light of truth is shone. Another thing we can learn — cockroaches have been shown to survive a nuclear blast, which might come in handy for the rest of us considering President Obama's weak stance on Iran. Better throw some stimulus money in that direction. Dear Mark is a public platform for your entertainment and enlightenment. Please e-mail your questions or comments to marklevy92@aol.com.
