Brazil Drill, No-fly and No Clones

Comment

Dear Mark: President Obama is the most arrogant president we've ever had. He tells us he doesn't want to drill in the United States for environmental reasons and then promotes drilling in Brazil with $2 billion of our money. He acts as if no one will notice his complete contradiction on energy policy. How can he get away with this? — Sherlock in Chicago

Dear Sherlock: Two reasons. First, the media are still firmly ensconced in Obama's back pocket and the administration knows it, hence the arrogance of contradicting statements. Second, I believe President Obama made his statements in Brazil knowing that the Libya "no-fly zone" and the disaster in Japan are still making enough headlines to give him cover.

While in Brazil, Obama made this outrageous statement: "We want to work with you. We want to help with technology and support to develop these oil reserves safely, and when you're ready to start selling, we want to be one of your best customers."

Excuse me, but we've got enough oil here at home so we don't need to be anybody's "best customer." Our energy situation would be just fine if our liberal administration and cohorts would just get the heck out of the way.

You won't win a Pulitzer Prize for this question, but it would be nice if someone in the media would press the administration on why it's encouraging oil exploration in Brazil while discouraging it at home.

Also on his Latin America tour, Obama threw out this little gem that conveniently missed the headlines and spoke volumes about his core beliefs. The president told his audience in Chile, "This is the Latin America that I see — a region on the move, proud of its progress and ready to assume a greater role in world affairs."

Just in case Obama forgot, the United States is also proud of its progress and its role in world affairs — something he should have learned in history class while attending Columbia University.

Oh, that's right, President Obama likes to apologize for America's role in the world — something he learned while attending Jeremiah Wright's church for 20 years.

Dear Mark: I don't understand. How did establishing a "no-fly zone" over Libya turn into a tank-killing mission? Isn't it swell that the commander in chief enforcing this "no-fly zone" is a Nobel Peace Prize winner? Imagine how bad things would be otherwise. — Dumb Dennis

Dear Dumb: The "Peace Prize" irony is what happens when liberal intentions meet the reality of a dangerous world. As far as "tank killing," the U.N. resolution permits "all necessary measures" to protect civilians. Obama is hoping his liberal base won't notice the footage of burning tanks on television.

Dear Mark: A bill is going through the Minnesota legislature banning possible human cloning. The Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life, a pro-life organization, is pushing the measure. Does this really have anything to do with abortion? — Gopher State Guru

Dear Gopher: I'm not sure about the moral implications of human cloning with respect to the sanctity of human life and abortion. But according to a CBS Minnesota news story, "The legislation would make it a felony to attempt, perform or aid in cloning by combining embryonic eggs with the nucleus removed and other human cells."

There is no truth to the rumor that the Vikings are secretly trying to create another Brett Favre. I'm just worried that liberals are attempting to clone Al Franken.
