Same-Sex Marriage Through History

"The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun." — Ecclesiastes 1:9

Is there anything new under the sun?

Or is the Bible right, again, when it tells us that everything that has been shall be done and everything that shall be done has been done?

The older I get the more I appreciate this verse — and the more convinced I become that whatever will be has already been.

Let's take something really new — something such as same-sex marriage.

Even a decade ago, the idea that American courts and legislatures and executives might promote this idea would have been considered absurd. No one, not even its strongest advocates, could have imagined the traction this repulsive idea could gain in such a short period.

Thanks to activist courts and perverse politicians, today it actually is being practiced and recognized, and despite its overwhelming unpopularity within the body politic, there is a feeling of inevitability about its future in America (if you consider California and Massachusetts and other similar jurisdictions part of the USA).

Isn't same-sex marriage a new idea? Has same-sex marriage ever been practiced anywhere else in the world? Can you name a time or place in history in which nations approved of marriages between members of the same sex?

Most of us probably can't.

In fact, however, the Bible is right again. Regarding same-sex marriage, at least, there is nothing new under the sun.

According to ancient rabbinical teachings, there was such a nation. It was called Canaan — the land of the Canaanites, the land conquered by the children of Israel on direct orders from God.

The Bible describes the Canaanites as sinful people. It was a land known for perversion and degeneracy. For that reason, God wanted it destroyed. He didn't just want the people killed or dispersed. He wanted every vestige of the civilization to vanish. He wanted the flocks and herds destroyed — even the groves.

What was it about these people that made God so displeased?

The Midrash teaches that the Canaanites would write marriage contracts for men with men and women with women.

"A man would marry a man, and a woman a woman," it says.

There you have it.

Today's gay activists may think they came up with a new idea — a "new right." But this has been tried before — shall we say, with little success.

What happened to the Canaanites as a result of their refusal to honor the most basic laws of God?

Leviticus 18:25 tells us: "And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants."

San Francisco, take note. The rest of California, take note. Massachusetts, take note. New Jersey, take note. America , take note.

God gives us free will to do these things — to turn away from his commandments. But there are consequences for doing so. The Canaanites found out the hard way. You won't find any Canaanites around anymore. They haven't been around for a very long time. They were regurgitated from their land. They were spewed out like rotten fruit. They have been all but forgotten by history.

I'm not a prophet — just a simple student of the Bible and history. And what the Bible and history suggest to me about same-sex marriage is that it is not appreciated by God. It seems to represent a kind of crossing of the Rubicon in the eyes of our Creator.

It appears it is a dangerous practice not only for those involved but also for those around such activity. It appears dangerous for the future of a nation that even permits it. It appears to be one of those final straws in the degeneracy of an ungodly nation before the Lord says, "Enough."

I know this will sound like nothing more than silly superstition to those hellbent on participating in this depravity. I know it will sound that way to many who can see no harm in whatever takes place "between consenting adults." I know it will make little difference to people who have turned away from the one true God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

But for those who still are willing to learn from the Bible and history, I thought you should know.

We'll skip a rebuttal of your naive, indeed illiterate, reading of the Old Testament, and merely mention that many of the 3rd and 4th century "fathers" of the Church taught that even sex in marriage was disgusting, if not a perversion in itself. Christianity, like Islam, is a religion of extremist sexual views. For centuries the Church taught that the holy life was a life of sexual segregation and sexual abstinence. Apparently you would not agree. Either way, BFD. Let me give you a brief list of why same-sex unions will happen here, even as they are in other secular democracies.
(1) Other peoples' domestic arrangement are simply none of your business, Joe. (2) It is a basic premise of law that civil rights cannot be granted or withheld on such variables as religious belief, color, political membership, sex, language, and by extension, sexual orientation. (3) Marriage is a sacrament. The state is no longer in the business of enforcing sacraments. It's called "separation of church and state." (4) Since you're on a "historical" kick, let me disabuse you further: times change. In another generation, virtually no one will hold your opinion, even as Americans no longer believe that blacks are born to be slaves because of "the curse of Ham." There was a time when whites preached (following the apostle Paul) that "slaves should be obedient to their masters." Like nearly everything else in the bible, that sentiment has no relevance to modern society, which is why such verses are no longer cited. (5) If homosexual couples are violating some basic law of nature, what are we to do, practically speaking? Arrest them and send them to camps? That was the Nazi's solution. Have them declared insane and pack them off to mental institutions? That was the Communist's solution. State sponsered surgury like lobotomy? You need to move beyond the theoretical and tell us what you propose to DO about it, Joe. Stand up like the man you think you are and let us see the Joe behind the pious rhetoric.
