Democrats Need to Turn Off Fox News

Share Comment

During the 2000 presidential campaign, Democrat Al Gore became captive of the right-wing noise machine. The activists and their media had gone honking nuts over President Clinton's sexual indiscretion. Vice President Gore thought these people mattered and so distanced his campaign from a popular Democratic president.

Never mind that 23 million jobs were added under Clinton's watch. Never mind that Clinton was leaving the budget in surplus. Never mind that in the post-scandal midterm, Democrats actually gained five seats in the House. Never mind that Clinton was leaving office with a huge 66 percent approval rating, 3 percent higher than Ronald Reagan's.

Rush Limbaugh was enough to intimidate Al Gore. Not only did Gore keep Clinton off his campaign stages, but he took pot shots at him.

"I keep my commitments, to my wife and to my family and to my job," Gore piously reminded audiences. (How interesting that Gore's marriage is now breaking up, but Clinton's goes on.) Gore lost an election he should have easily won.

Democrats are at it again. They have more to be depressed about this time, for sure. But their willingness to believe the right's propaganda about leading unstoppable forces — while downplaying their own accomplishments — will make matters only worse.

Even in the most liberal parts of America, right-wing talk dominates the airwaves. The comments on newspaper Websites are weighted with anti-liberal bile. Come an actual election, the Democrat usually wins handily, and if a Republican prevails, it's not one of the hotheads.

But Democrats are the glass-half-empty party. (The other half is Pepto-Bismol.) It's getting late in the game to convince Democrats that the public's angst about the economy and the American future isn't all about them. They still have time to perk up.

Their health care reforms guarantee access to medical care, will slow spending that is bankrupting the nation and should reduce future deficits, to boot.

The financial reforms offer some protection against another economic freefall. These shouldn't be hard sells.

But you do have to sell them when the opposition is blasting these achievements 24/7. Sadly, few Democrats are blowing their horn, especially over health care, and some are actually running against that success. This is self-defeating behavior.

Back in March, when congressional Republicans denied Democrats an inch of cooperation on health care, their spokesmen inflated some public displeasure into surging waves of voter anger against Democrats. Fine, that's their job.

But Democrats did not have to cower when all of 300 tea party people demonstrated in March against their reforms. And so what if some loudmouths made a racket at their town hall meetings. The rudeness probably offended many gentle folks at home.

Look at those polls tracking public support for health care reform. The lines closely follow the Democrats' willingness to defend what they've done. After passage, approval for the reforms rose.

Of course, this support is now inching down. When Democratic candidates back away from their party's legislation, people assume there's something wrong with it.

Nov. 2 need not be as grim a day for Democrats as they think it will be. In special congressional elections in upstate New York and western Pennsylvania — two blue-collar districts expected to go Republican — Democrats won. These were real elections.

Democrats don't need a more passionate base to win elections. They need more votes. A quiet vote counts as much as a strident one. No doubt the weird Christine O'Donnell will have more enthusiastic backers in the Delaware senatorial race than Democrat Chris Coons. And chances are she'll lose.

Democrats, turn off Fox, turn off Rushbo and put something livelier in your glass. Your funk is your worst enemy.

Never mind the fact that unemployment was rising fast and budgets were projected to rise fast the first 2 years of ClinTON's presidency due, in part, to the fact that Congress was controlled by the Dumbocrats. It was only when a Republican majority was installed that Clinton was forced to move more centrist and fiscally conservative. Try looking up these 2 terms together: Unemployment and Party Control. Better yet, here is the actual link for, because heaven knows Liberal's can't figure out how to look up facts themselves. http://www.redstate.com/neil_stevens/2010/07/08/a-chart-of-unemployment-since-1995/
Dumbocrats like you seem to like to forget that little "inconvenient truth" don't you? Ah, the way of Liberal insanity - Yell as loud as possible and hope people don't fact check ALA Olberman. :-) Keep deluding yourselves. History and public opinion are showing who is really the horrible party. Liberals, in case you are wondering.

What about the main stream media? Should the Republicans not listen to that?

Perhaps the Democrats need to TURN ON Fox News -- Apparently that is the only way to learn what the majority of American voters are REALLY thinking . . . and how they will be voting come November

How shrill! How nasty! How vile!

"It's a sin, it should be illegal: 'Even in the most liberal parts of America, right-wing talk dominates the airwaves.' "

"Plug your ears, shutter your windows, stick your head in the sand - but most importantly - SHUT OFF FOX NEWS!"

Ms. Knickers in a Twist is all aflubergast because ONE network doesn't follow the uber-left agenda. Get her a Valium, get her a Zoloft, get a Prozac! (Now we know why she supports Obamacare - she's uhmmm .... "delicate!")

Perhaps that explains the predominance of the genteel and ever so delicate "unintelligensia" on the left; if they were in the right their delicate sensitive minds would collapse under the relentless barrage of vile bile spewed at the right by the non-Foxxy networks. Sometimes consciousness can be raised by standing in the other guy's shoes.

FOX calls itself "fair and balanced." Maybe it's a pretense, but at least they try. The other networks - they don't even pretend to be fair or balanced. That makes them just the proper pill for Ms. Knickers in a Twist.

Re: Larry Risso

Looking at the crashing ratings for the uber-left networks, that seems to be what's happening. In a free society people vote with their feet - or in this case - with their clickers.

Ms. Harrop seems offend by Americans having this choice. So much for diversity, choice and tolerance when the left has the upper hand. This has been true of the left ever since Robespierre wrote the left's game book during the Reign of Terror. Stalin, Lenin, Hitler, Pol Pot, Saddam - all self-identified socialist - all the same.

Froma,
You're not catching on. There is a lot not to like about what Obama and the Dems have been doing. Let me give you one reason and this one reason is sufficient to defeat him, his allies, and his agenda. It is this; in the 'health care' bill there is, as part of the law, the requirement that every citizen purchase a government approved health insurance policy. While most dwell on this feature as the main issue, it is not. In order to even conceive of such a law there must already exist the notion that the federal government has the power to order people to divest themselves of income that has already been taxed in an arbitrary manner.
This is a Trojan Horse. If they can compel you to buy government approved health insurance they can compel you to follow a low fat, low carb, alfalfa sprout diet and refuse to give you health care if you disobey. That power and anything else you can think of is assumed in the 'health care' bill, and it's not going to be tolerated, not to put too fine a point on it.
This is a usurpation and tyranny on the face of it. In order for the government to order a citizen do anything is implies prior assumption of that power. Are you getting it? The government doesn't have that kind of power. Do you understand the difference between being a free person and being a slave? Nobody is going to order me to buy anything. There's only a couple of hundred million people that feel like me and these morons are going to get an education on Nov 2nd.

Ms Harrop__ Seems as if the tide is running against you and your liberal / progressive comrades. Americans have seen what the Obamas, Pelosis, Reids, Dodds, Franks, Schumers, etc. have in mind for the country... and they don't like it.
Those of you who supported our infantile and incompetent president's call to "fundamentally change Ameica" are in for
a much deserved "bad ride" in November and beyond. Have a nice day now!

The very sad thing is that you actually believe what you write--and you vote! Also, it appears
from this column that you don't believe in the right of free speech (Fox) or the right of people to listen to and watch what they desire, which will educate them as to the thoughts of REAL America, not your Obamaized, un-American ideas. SHAME ON YOU!
Sincerely,

Ms. Harrop,
In typical liberal elite fashion, you mention how wonderful life was when Bill Clinton was president. I would like to ask one question. In 1992 when Mr. Clinton became president, what was your email address? Being a 'journalist' (I'll go along with your delusion), you might have had one but the average person did not. However, when Mr. Clinton left office in 2000, most average people had access to the internet and used it frequently. Is that another triumph we can pin on Mr. Clinton? Of course it is not. Giving Bill Clinton credit for the economic boom resulting from the emergence of internet technology of the 90s is like giving Zachary Taylor credit for the 1849 Gold Rush.
I am not sure what point you are trying to make but here's a tip, the elite 'I'm educated and know better' stance has run its course. Why don't you come back down to the real world and talk to your audience in a civil fashion, it would be so unique, so refreshing and you might find that the discourse that you receive in exchange might be useful instead of insulting.
Peace!

Hey Froma, your columns are humorous; you are one funny lady! When you wrote in your latest column that the American people are actually beginning to like Obamacare, that was so totally outrageous and wrong that it was actually hilarious! The latest Rasmussen poll shows that 61% of the American people want Obamacare REPEALED! That's 61 PER CENT! Also, 52% say that their beliefs are more in line with Sarah Palin than with Obama! Now before you dismiss Rasmussen as a rilght winger with an agenda, please know that his polls and Pew Research are the most accurate and reliable polls in the country. But you, other elite left leaning commentators still don't get it! Dems are running scared away from Obama, Pelosi, Reid. They are actually telling their constituents that they are opposed to Obamacare, stimulus, capandtrade etc
They want nothing to do with this administration, possibly the worst in the history of the Presidency.
Yet the old so called 'mainstream media' still don't get it. That's why Newsweek went bankrupt and was sold, the NYTimes is going bankrupt and CBS, NBC, CNN are in the 'ratings cellar' yet they continue to try to prop up Obama and lie to the American people. We the people are not uninformed; we are not stupid and come November maybe some of you will FINALLY get the message!
