McCain Surges Among Young Voters

Share Comment

A massive shift in younger and older voters is roiling the presidential race according to new data from the Fox News/Opinion Dynamics Poll concluded Oct. 28-29. Younger voters — under 45 — once Obama's base, now are evenly divided between the two candidates. But voters over 65 have shifted sharply to the Democrat in the past week.

Voters under 45 supported Obama by 52-38 in the Fox News poll of Oct. 21-22. But this week's survey indicates that they now break evenly with 45 percent supporting Obama and 46 percent backing McCain. On the other hand, voters 65 and over, who had backed Obama by 46-42 last week have now shifted decisively in his favor and he now leads McCain among seniors by 54-39. Middle-age voters — aged 45-64 — are largely unchanged in their views. Last week they backed Obama by 48-40, and this week they still support him by 48-43.

Overall, the Fox News survey shows McCain narrowing Obama's lead from 49-40 (9 points) to 47-44 (3 points) over the past week.

The shift in the attitudes of young people may be directly related to the tax issue, brought home by a McCain advertisement featuring Joe the Plumber.

Younger voters, trying to make their way in their careers, are more sensitive to changes in taxes than older people, many of whom have retired from the labor force. By attacking Obama for wanting to "spread the wealth around," the McCain camp seems to have struck a nerve among those who are entering the most productive years of their employment history.

On the other hand, seniors may be more comfortable with Obama than they have been previously and might be more accepting of his candidacy. Obama's attacks on McCain over Social Security, always a sensitive topic for the elderly may also be hitting home driving seniors into the Democratic column.

The Fox News/Opinion Dynamics survey was conducted on Oct. 28-29 and surveyed 924 likely voters nationwide. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 points.

Sir;... You must be talking about all the school kids trotted out to make it seems some one cares that Mr. Mccain is back in town... So, I am waiting on the only poll that counts... Let's see how good your facts are... How many millions would you bet??? I wouldn't bet a penny on fux news anything... I mean, you have to see the target to hit it, Unless you are shooting in the dark at the dark... What do you think of the chances that in the future they will say: Out of the mouths of babes and fox news??? No... I don't think they could hit a barn door with a dead cat... But, let us see....Thanks...Sweeney

Dear Mr Dick Morris

I am a huge admirer of you personally and your work. However, in the Hannity Colmes show I am just watching at 5:30 am local time here in London, UK, I would like to take the liberty to say that I was embarrassed to hear you make comments which suited a 10-year old child. It is clear to everyone on this side of the Atlantic that there are NO UNDECIDED VOTERS. Why we Europeans could see it as clear as a crystal bowl and you in America cannot? A majority of the so called " undecided voters" will be voting for Mr Barack Obama, not for Mr John McCain. The reason they are "undecided" is that they are embarrased to admit they will vote for Mr Obama. This time it is the opposite to the Bradley effect. I can see it right here in London where I live. I have white American clients who work for the American Embasy and other financial companies who confidentially told me that they would never divulge to their fellow Americans that they will vote for Mr Obama in fear of being tagged should Mr McCain wins. I appreciate the reason you kept repeating " I don't know, I really don't know ", but in my opinion it made you looked quite naive and disoriented. As for the issue of coal, to quote a segment of Mr Obama's statement and take it out of context, as Mr Hannity does ( who I think looks more fanatical than the Islamists ) is intimidating ordinary people's intellect and has the opposite effect;, it harms our campaign and cause. Appers as a desperate move to use anything , to throw the kitchen sink in. I am a staunch Republican and voted for Mr McCain, but this time it is apparent that we will lose. Everyone knows this, why should we pretend otherwise? Let's hope that Mrs Sarah Palin will have the energy and determination to embark in a journey few people could envisage taking and run as our next Presidential candidate.

Respectfully

Sophia Lisa Reyes
