Question to Left: If You love America, Why 'Transform' It?

Share Comment

If you met a man who said he would like to "transform" or "remake" his wife, would you conclude that he: a) thought very highly of his wife and loved her? Or b) held his wife in rather low esteem and therefore found living her rather difficult?

The answer is obvious: Those who wish to remake anything (or anyone) do not think highly of the person or thing they wish to remake.

Little is as revealing of Barack Obama's and the left's view of America than their use of the words "transform" and "remake" when applied to what they most want to do to America.

I among others pointed this out during the presidential campaign when Obama frequently promised he would "transform America." That is why those of us attuned to the importance of words and who hold America in high esteem were so worried about an Obama election.

Americans on the left frequently attack critics for labeling them "unpatriotic" and/or accusing them of not loving America. The first charge is false to the best of my knowledge. I have searched in vain for an instance of a normative conservative or Republican spokesman calling Democrats or liberals "unpatriotic."

The second, however, is a more complex question.

It is not an attack on the left to say that their own rhetoric suggests that they love a vision of America considerably more than they love the reality of America; that they love what America could be rather than what it is. Otherwise, how to explain this liberal vocabulary of "remaking" and "transforming" America. You don't yearn to transform or remake that which you love.

Many years ago, the prominent Jewish writer, my friend since childhood, Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, helped to clarify — in a non-partisan way — a major difference between liberals and conservatives.

"Conservatives," he said, "romanticize the past; liberals romanticize the future."

The romanticizing of the future has been a distinguishing characteristic of the left since Karl Marx. Leftist ideologies have secular eschatologies. The further left one goes the greater the belief in revolution, the need to overthrow the contemporary order. That is why Marx so hated religion — he and Engels saw it as the "opiate of the masses" because religion, in their view, taught people how to deal with their (abject) condition rather than to become revolutionaries. But one day — one great day - "all men will be brothers" in the stirring words of the revolutionary song that ends Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.

The problem is that compared with such a future utopia, no actual society could possibly compete. Certainly not racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, unequal America.

In light of those frequently made criticisms of America, I have often asked representatives of the left why they criticize America so much if they love it so much. "Precisely because we love America, we criticize it. You criticize that which you love," is the nearly universal response.

But, of course, it isn't true. If you constantly criticize your spouse, for example, it is difficult to imagine that you really do love him or her. And perhaps more important, it is very unlikely that your spouse feels loved. That is why after being routinely described as racist, sexist, imperialist, etc., it is difficult to be able to tell that America is loved by the left.

This is not written in order to indict the left, let alone the president, for not loving America. No one can measure an other's feelings. Furthermore I do not question the sincerity of anyone who says he loves America. What I question are the actions and rhetoric of those who claim to love America yet want to transform and remake it.

From the article: " I have searched in vain for an instance of a normative conservative or Republican spokesman calling Democrats or liberals "unpatriotic."
Rush Limbaugh (who was endorsed by Cheney) is obsessed with lying about liberals being "America Haters" and other unpatriotic labels. Sean Hannity who was a good friend of the Bush adminstration also is obsessed lying about liberals being anti-American.
Ann Coulter wrote a book about how everybody who disagrees with her is an enemy of the state. Her book is called "Treason" and she asserts that everyone who disagrees with her is guilty of a crime that is punishable by death.
I'm not sure if Dennis Prager is uninformed or if he is being delibrately misleading.

Re: Pericles. When you have liberals like Sean Penn, Janine Garafalo, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and the Dixie Chicks actively and publicly wishing for our military to fail in Iraq and Afghanistan (and asserting the conflicts to be "quagmires," and countless other examples of rooting for someone else over our own interests), I'd say it's not Rush or anyone else who is "lying" about liberals hating this country. As to Coulter, I've read all of her books, and have never seen nor heard her say anything remotely close to what you've accused her of. What she does do is suggest that people who disagree, probably don't have their facts straight. People such as.....you. Makes me wonder if you've ever actually spent five minutes listening to Limbaugh, Hannity, or Coulter, or read any of their books all the way through. I wouldn't call you evil, but you sure are a dumbass.

This is the biggest piece of flawed logic I have ever seen printed. This guy should be embarassed.
I love my country. Because I hope and vote and take action in a way that hopes that it can fully reach its potential, consistent with my personal beliefs and individual conciousness, shows that. Being complacent, happy with the status quo, and allow it to continue to deteriorate in the areas of health care, education, infastructure, etc. would not be evidence of love for this country. Conservatives do not have a monopoly on loving their country. Its this kind of thinking that's going to turn this country into a one-party system. Keep it up!

Seriously. If the new motto of the party turned into what this guy is suggesting:
"This is the best we can do. Accept it."
I wouldn't count on winning too many more elections from even conservative members of my family. I'd see them go liberal so quickly it'd make this guys head spin.
If people thought like this in America all along, they wouldn't have bucked royal rule, freed slaves, womens votes, civil rights. Hell, most of the ancestors of today's modern Americans wouldn't have bothered to get on the boat.
He is right when he says that conservatives always idealize the past. Right now they are idealizing the 50s. Women in the kitchen, blacks at the back of the bus, etc. Hell, if they had their way, we'd have mandatory church attendance a' la the Puritans.
If you're a minority who's happy they can go to college, share water fountains and public toilets, sit where they want on the bus...thank a liberal. If you're a woman grateful you can decide to take birth control (before you couldn't even if you were MARRIED), have a job outside your home, own property in your own right, vote...thank a liberal. Hell, if you're a RENTER---be happy and thank a liberal---otherwise, you wouldn't be able to vote! Did you enjoy a cocktail or beer this weekend--thank a liberal!
Keep in mind that 100 years from now, our children's children will not bat an eye at gay rights. They'll think today's ultra-conservatives are just as crazy as we think today about KKK members and the men who used to beat women up in jails for the audacity of thinking they could be equals.
History for THOUSANDS OF YEARS has always, in the long term, been on the side of progress. Set-backs are generally a minor blip of a decade or few. That's why this guy ought to be sooo embarassed. Maybe he needs to crack open a history book once in awhile instead of his Bible.

Re: Matt

You said: "When you have liberals like Sean Penn, Janine Garafalo, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and the Dixie Chicks actively and publicly wishing for our military to fail in Iraq and Afghanistan"

I very much encourage you to provide examples. You don't want anybody to think you're lying about this matter do you?

Limbaugh and his ilk do, in fact, lie about liberals being America haters. It's sad that you go along with those sort of obvious lies. Those who believe Limbaugh's lies and idiocy need to learn to think for themselves. Letting Limbaugh do one's thinking is very dangerous.

Coulter did, in fact, say that those who disagree with her are guilty of treason. If you go to the first page of her book entitled "Treason" you'll see that is true. If you read further in "Treason" you'll see many examples.
