Obama Extends the Hand of Friendship

Share Comment

Paul Levandowski knows pressure.

When the baritone horn player from Michigan approached President Obama as part of the first gay band to march in an inaugural parade, he recalls thinking: "Oh, God, please, I hope I can get this high note. I hope my valves don't freeze. I hope I can remember all the notes."

The history-making band performed John Philip Sousa's famous "Washington Post" perfectly, as the new president and First Lady Michelle waved from the presidential reviewing stand.

The delighted smiles on the musicians' faces capture how gay Americans feel about the unprecedented hand of friendship the new president keeps extending.

He included a lesbian couple among the "everyday Americans" on his Whistle Stop train ride from Philadelphia to the nation's capital.

He had gay Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson deliver the invocation kicking off the pre-inauguration extravaganza at the Lincoln Memorial.

At the Lincoln Memorial, Obama used the phrase "gay and straight" in expressing his hope of bringing everyone together.

And he's appointing openly gay men and lesbians to influential posts. Nancy Sutley was quickly confirmed as chairwoman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

Obama is expected to tap Fred Hochberg as chairman of the Export-Import Bank and — in what will be the highest-level presidential appointment ever of an out gay person — John Berry as director of the Office of Personnel Management.

"John Berry's role as director of OPM will essentially make him the head of (human resources) of the federal government. The fact that an openly gay man will be in this job speaks to the president's views about equality in the workplace," said Denis Dison of the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund.

But to Lisa Hazirijian, who along with her partner, Michelle Kaiser, rode on the Whistle Stop tour, nothing demonstrates Obama's commitment to change for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) Americans more than the official Website of the executive branch of the U.S.

government.

At whitehouse.gov, under "The Agenda" for civil rights, the new president spells out his support for equality for LGBT Americans, including backing civil unions, adoption rights, a ban on workplace discrimination and lifting "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

"Too often, the issue of LGBT rights is exploited by those seeking to divide us," Obama declares at the site. "But at its core, this issue is about who we are as Americans. It's about whether this nation is going to live up to its founding promise of equality by treating all its citizens with dignity and respect."

Hazirijian, who organized gay supporters for Obama in Cleveland, says she understands why some gay people are shocked that Obama is following through on the inclusive message of his presidential campaign.

"The change just shows that Barack Obama really is who he appears to be," she says.

But the new atmosphere created by the all-are-welcome mat in front of the Obama White House isn't just being noticed by gay Americans.

After watching a YouTube video of the gay marching band — led by a high-spirited drum major — perform for the First Family, a viewer named "Wisdomwalker" left this comment, "I'm not a homosexual, but watching this made (me) really proud to be an American for some reason."

Jeeezis Deb;.... Is there no issue for you but the Gay/Lesbian issue??? You are like a coin with only side, and no matter how you're flipped you come up tails...Use your head, Ma'am...You might think it is horribly unfair; but if society does not take some care of the hets you haven't got a society... And raising children is not any more of a Choice than homosexuality, but it is much neglected, demeaned, and labor intensive...Around here, the gays once asked for the family rate at the zoo... Perhaps a great majority of people taking their children to the zoo thought the gays should be in a zoo...But since when does a couple count as a family??? I mean, parents have to expose their children to zoos and museums to do their duty by them to provide education; and if they run across Gays there, well you are a fact of life, just like art and animals... But the family rate??? Come on, and get real... It isn't all about you... It isn't even all sexuality and sexual consciousness... What is so great about going from ac to dc??? Is there some third choice???? It is not original, and it is not better; and considering that gays have often mucked things up no matter where they have had their way, what is the socially redeeming quality to homosexuality??? If they can beat straights out of a job because they are there every day with bells on chomping at the bit; and everyone else is occasionally out dealing with family issues, illness, and school; then naturally you might have a better rep with the boss, and not with your fellow workers... And that is the story of life as far as I can see it, where the winners win by default, because others cannot or will not get there and get the job done... And when I have had to win the hard way because some guy with a working wife, and no kids could camp on a job I was desparete for, and without near the impediments, then you can lose some respect, and it is not because you are prejudiced, or bigoted; but because you realize you are doing something that is not particularly pleasing, that no one gives medals for, and no society can live without... Why don't you write a column once in a while about how difficult it is to be a decent father or mother, to educate your children since the state thinks of it as a privilege rather than a public responsibility, and do it against the competition of a whole bunch of rotten parents or people who would be rotten parents if they were parents at all... Now; you see I am as good at whining as anyone else, but I want to tell you, that I have seen some creditable evidence that parents die younger than non-parents, so they do not just give time, but life to the process... It is a sacrifice, not unlike the sacrifice all people make for their relationships; but what exactly do you think is the Gay/Les sacrifice for their society???They want it all..That's unusual....What do they invest in having it all??? Now, you know I support your equality; but I have a hard time supporting your privilege... Does that make sense??? Thanks...Sweeney
