What Is a Narcissist To Do?

With news of President Obama's plan to swarm the heartland this week to re-energize his base, one wonders whether he's finally heard the message that mainstream America is repulsed by his agenda. Is his direct appeal to "the young and minority voters" an admission that he's beyond electoral redemption with the rest?

Well, a new George Washington University Battleground poll indicates that only 38 percent of Americans believe he deserves to be re-elected. His personal approval rating is higher — mystifyingly — but that is doubtlessly small comfort to Democratic congressmen, whose political fortunes are on the line in just five weeks.

Unfortunately for Democrats, the midterm elections will be nationalized like never before (including 1994), and the primary issue at play in these so-called "local" elections will be the president's agenda, just as it was with the U.S. Senate election in Massachusetts. The Republicans were smart to introduce their "pledge" notwithstanding its flaws, but even without it, the congressional elections would have been nationalized.

The Washington Post reports that Obama is focusing his efforts on his "surge" voters — "the roughly 15 million Americans who voted for the first time in 2008" — because the polls are "showing independent voters swinging toward Republicans in Wisconsin and the nation's other battlegrounds."

But even Obama's 2008 campaign manager, David Plouffe, acknowledges that though many of these voters still strongly approve of the president, "a lot of them aren't showing enough predilection to vote."

Then again, what else can Obama do? He has lost credibility with mainstream Americans, and his record is an unmitigated disaster. He has no persuasive excuses for his policy failures, as the blaming Bush strategy lost its luster months ago. Not that he isn't going to continue trying to persuade adults to ignore their lying eyes, but for now, at least, he's out to recapture the magic with those voters he excited into participatory politics.

But how will he sell them this time? Plouffe says Obama intends to remind students of all the hard work they put into his 2008 campaign and warn them that if they don't stay engaged, all their hard work together could be jeopardized.

But hard work to what end? Has he ever bothered defining what he is trying to accomplish, beyond the platitudinous "hope and change"? Hope and change from what, to what?

Of course, we adults know darn well what he's trying to accomplish: the transformational change of the greatest nation in the history of mankind.

That is, uprooting America's founding ideals and replacing them with his Utopian vision, which even he does not understand.

But when he approaches his fellow idealists this time, he will be on different footing. He can no longer credibly portray himself as an outsider looking to change the status quo. He is largely responsible for the status quo, which, by the way, is anything but static. The "quo" is dynamic and is heading straight into the gutter, with our federal government 1 1/2 steps through the bankruptcy door, nationalized medicine merely a heartbeat away, our national security going south and a chief executive and commander in chief determined to continue on the same perilous path.

What specifics will he tell young people and minorities to motivate them to stay engaged? Reportedly, he will "tout his administration's record on issues important to young people." Does that mean he will tell the young that if they continue to support his agenda by electing his shameless enablers in Congress, they can expect America to stay in a severe recession for another decade because "it took us 10 years to get into this mess"? He might as well say, "Stay the course and be guaranteed you won't have a job when you graduate, but at least you'll be thwarting those evil Republicans."

Will he tell minorities he has personally enhanced race relations in this nation, when he has clearly fanned the flames of racial tension? That he has improved their plight, when he has, for example, single-handedly reversed welfare reform, which had measurably reduced, among other things, black child poverty and illegitimacy?

Don't forget that a major part of his appeal to the young and minorities was his promise of a new era, a new type of politics, a different atmosphere in America. But he has given us the most partisan and divisive administration in recent memory. How can going back to the well with yet more empty rhetoric help him when he has completed a two-year record directly contradicting his promises?

Say what you will, but Obama has no other play in his playbook than to make these elections about himself and his agenda, when that is the exact opposite of what his party needs. But what is a lonely narcissist to do?

How can you, in your supreme ignorance speak so ill of Barrock obama like this ?? Do you know him personally? From the moment he got elected and even before he won the election, the republicans, (whatever the hell that word means oh ya, it means hypocrite I forget), have been berating our new presidents so called "agenda" ...even before there was an agenda......criticizing anything and everything the man does and making unfair and rash judgments...he hasn't even been in office 2 years you moron! Myself and my friends are educated and informed and we do our critical thinking homework, unlike the "dumbed down cows" of the selfish bigoted right wing and the so called tea party idiots....( Your last name is what?,,, Limbaugh?! HA mmmmmm wonder who you're related to. Big mouth you know who! expousing so called family values and right wing extremism cause you're all so afraid someone might take some of your precious money, or you might have to contribute and share for the common good to the 44,000,000 in poverty in this country! Oh ya you poor republicans! Or even worse your daughters might fall in love with a black man, (yes most of us college educated girls think Barrock is very handsome as is his beautiful family), or someone without health insurance who believes we need socialized medicine for those who can't afford, (like I do), or even worse that the US is becoming more like a 3rd world country with the very rich and the very poor. And trust me this is not and I repeat is NOT BARROCK OBAMAS FAULT! Let's take a look at the EXTREME GREED that preceeded him. How could that be his fault! Sorry pal but we needed the stimulus! And we could show you a million times why! All the better for you and your friends who simply perpetuate even more polarization with your antagonism toward our young president who is up against HUGE OBSTACLES that i'd like to see you and your friends fix overnight!! Show us your plan! Ya right. You brag about the tea party values....are you aware that the so called tea party era that all of you so eulogize literally was worse politically than we are now?? First of all take about illegal immigration?! Look what "WE" did to the american indians?!! take about move in and take over illiegally and then force puritanical christian missionaries on them and then turn them on to our alchohol and bad food and next thing you know their physically and mentally ill and add to huge poverty.....oh ya the superiority of the religious right. during the boston tea party there was so much evil going on with huge prejudice and a huge division between the greedy rich and the poor...women were treated as 1/8% of a person, blacks as usual were not even considered human and we could go on from there!!!! What the H is so glamorous about that?! Oh ya the founding fathers were sooo much more on track with the "REAL AMERICAN VALUES" ideology than anyone today?! Not true, in fact a lot of amoral juicy little tidbits of inhumanity were going on then just as now....GET CLEAR! Not to mention the innocent ones that were being burned at the stake.....wow !!! And women not only had no say or vote but dare not show their ankles in public for fear of being beaten or worse! So go ahead continue to put the tea party ideology on a pedastal because it's about as real as Columbus discovering america! Speaking of burning at the stake isn't that what all of you are doing to Barrock!? are you jealous and bigoted at the same time. Because believe me if he was white he would not be taking this kind of criticism........truthfully all presidential regimes are owned by whatever special interests that got them elected...whether itls big oil, or some inflated corporations, or the unions, big realesate, arms and war (talk about crooked! we could dissect your little republican world on that one!) or as now BIG HEALTH CARE AND BIG PHARMACY! wow! Our presidents are owned....even mr. obama.....but so are all your republicans, in fact the GOP is more apt the ones doing the owning with there corporate greed and not wanting to share. Oh that's right, sharing makes us the S word, yikes! SOCIALIST!!! Hey I lived in Canada for 4 years and talk about a clean run country and my health care was impressive and thorough as any american system. Only difference is I didn't have to become bankrupt after emergency sugery, as my self and some of my friends in this illustrious country, land of opportunity and good old fashioned red, white and blue!! Ya just ignore the poverty and keep bankrupting folks who have health procedures without insurance!!And these are usually the folks who make less than $25000 per yr. Ya, this is definately a rant ...which seems to be the popular thing to do these days. I fit right in.

Dude, it's real easy to talk about Obama that way. (Bush wasn't any better.) Anyway, everything he promised us during the election turned out to be bull. He says we're out of Iraq. Sure, what do you call 50,000 troops still fighting there? Hey, let's double down in Afganistan and make it 60,000 troops. I hated Bush and his neocons, but Obama is much worse. Gitmo, still there. No lobbyists in his admin? It's stacked to the hilt. Goldman Sachs and the Federal Reserve banksters are infiltrated at every level of the treasury, just like they have been for the past 30 years. Can't you see that Obama is a Wall Street construct? As Morpheus would say, "Thw wool pulled over your eyes to hide you from the truth". He was created to fool you as the banksters finish off the job of looting and destroying the middle class.

Re: Suzanne young
Very impressive Suzanne, and your diatribe of drivel would be more impressive if you learned the spelling of the President's name. Also, you failed to detail in your rant the special relationship you have with your husband? What, you don't have a husband? I would have never guessed!
