The Oh-So-Fickle Nature of Spring

Comment
Ah, Sweet Spring. Your fickle ways tease and tantalize the winter-weary among us as you arrive. First, you hint of summer days to come, and then you hold tightly to the hand of Old Man Winter, refusing him an on-time departure. What will you do next? Warm us? Chill us? Flirt with our emotions by dressing in your finest floral gown? However you settle in our local towns, your blooms will awe us, your blue skies enrapture us, your longer days promise us that welcome warmth is on its way. Spring has a way of touching the human soul across the ages, uniting generations with thoughts of love, beauty, happiness and new life. Said Sitting Bull of this showy season: "Behold, my friends, the spring is come; the earth has gladly received the embraces of the sun, and we shall soon see the results of their love!" The late newspaper humorist Lewis Grizzard, turned serious in his thoughts of spring: "Springtime is the land awakening.
The March winds are the morning yawn." Charles Dickens, writing in "Great Expectations," captured the Jekyll and Hyde nature of spring: "It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the winds blows cold; when it is summer in the light and winter in the shade." Poet Robert Browning put it just right when he penned these words: The year's at the spring And day's at the morn Morning's at seven The hillside's dew-pearled The lark's on the wing The snail's on the thorn God's in His heaven -- All's right with the world! To which we say, "Amen!" Now, if spring would only make itself a little more obvious. REPRINTED FROM THE NEW BERN SUN JOURNAL DISTRIBUTED BY CREATORS.COM
