The Decline and Fall of Private Education

Share Comment

There's something the U.S. government doesn't want you to know. And it's come out again in the new Heritage Foundation report on education. It conveys that the general public is increasingly dissatisfied with public schools, with a rising number opting for private education.

The report explains that during the 2007 and 2008 legislative sessions, 44 states introduced school-choice legislation. And in 2008, choices for private school were enacted into law or expanded in Arizona, Utah, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana and Pennsylvania. Today 14 states and the District of Columbia offer voucher or education tax-credit programs that aid parents with sending their children to private schools. But that may be short-lived.

Despite the growing public preference for private education, Congress recently canceled the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, which was created in 2004 to offer students from low-income families in the nation's capital an opportunity to join the voucher educational community. The law provided $14 million in scholarships to help pay for tuition at private schools of their choosing. But no longer.

Why did Congress nix the program, especially when recent studies showed that students receiving vouchers since the program's inception were academically 18.9 months ahead of their peers? (I read the other day that 100 percent of Thurgood Marshall Academy's charter graduates are accepted to colleges.) And why would Congress phase out a program that costs $7,500 per student annually, compared with the $15,000 it costs in Washington's public schools to educate a child?

So its cancellation is not a result of costing too much, because it's half the price of public schooling. And it's not because of inferior quality, because the kids enrolled in the program were scoring higher than students in regular schools. There's only one reason Congress canceled it, and it comes down to this: federal control and educational indoctrination.

Of course, government officials won't admit to a blatant usurpation of our rights, but they will say their educational reform is seeking to help your children. They will say it is necessary to establish common educational standards. They will say that we need to leave education to the experts and not to parents. And I fear that too many of us simply will give in to the whims of the nanny state.

As I wrote in my new best-selling book, "Black Belt Patriotism: How to Reawaken America": "The reason that government is cracking down on private instruction has more to do with suppressing alternative education than assuring educational standards. The rationale is quite simple, though rarely if ever stated: control future generations and you control the future. So rather than letting parents be the primary educators of their children — either directly or by educating their children in the private schools of their choice — (government) want(s) to deny parental rights, establish an educational monopoly run by the state, and limit private education options.

It is so simple any socialist can understand it. As Joseph Stalin once stated, 'Education is a weapon whose effects depend on who holds it in his hands and at whom it is aimed.'" (Get a free chapter of my book at http://www.ChuckNorrisNewBook.com.)

What's amazing, too, is how hypocritical it is for Congress to make this decision. The Heritage Foundation's report also conveys that 44 percent of current United States senators and 36 percent of current members of the U.S. House of Representatives have "at one time sent their children to private schools." While the foundation found that 11 percent of American students attend private schools, 20 percent of the members of the 111th Congress attended private high schools. And they want to remove the voucher option for private school education?

While the members of President Barack Obama's administration profess to have education as a top priority, they did nothing in March when Congress chose to discontinue the Opportunity Scholarship Program. Why? Because they all are in cahoots to not only choose our medical care for us, own the mortgage insurance and finance businesses, and place caps on corporate earnings but also control our educational choices for our children.

Our Founders' educational philosophy seems to me to be the charter of a true American system of education. But as we know, our nation's public schools, especially our nation's colleges and universities, are the seedbeds of politically correct and leftist indoctrination. It shouldn't be that way, but it is. It's a travesty that we have come to the point that we have to protect our children from the public school systems by looking to alternative methods.

If you have a good public school, congratulations. Stay active in the PTA, and attend school board meetings to keep it that way. For many parents, the only responsible choice is to send their children to private, parochial or Christian schools or to home-school their children. My wife and I home-school our 8-year-old twins.

What I also think is good about private schools is the students' wearing uniforms. Just like in my KICKSTART martial arts program for kids in Texas schools, uniforms in private schools give students a sense of pride and empowerment. They increase the atmosphere of respect. And uniforms make economic class more of a nonissue, making rich and poor students indistinguishable — not to mention the fact that uniforms do away with young people's style of wearing their jeans down to their knees and showing their butt cracks!

Parents deserve educational choices; choice is what this country was founded upon. Government's controlling and monopolizing education is just another avenue for usurping power and control on the slippery slope to socialism. And it's unbecoming for our republic, whose Founders created a system of freedom, choice and minimal government intervention.

Is it merely coincidental that the private choice of home schooling was outlawed by the Soviet state in 1919, by Hitler and Nazi Germany in 1938, and by Communist China in 1949?

Is America next?

This is another timely article, Chuck, thanks. Way back in 1993, Dr Peter S. Ruckman of Pensacola Bible Institute published Ruckman's Apocalypse, a picture album illustrating his Commentary on Revelation. Facing page 144, he has displayed the demonic Federal Judge Baal, seated beneath a new constitutional document declaring One Sex, One Religion, One Race, One God (i.e. Satan), One Bank, One Mark (of the Beast, Revelation 13). Before him, the judge has an array of box files labelled Federalised Schools, Federalised Industries, Federalised Families, Federalised Liquor, Federalised Property, Federalised Pornography, Federalise Churches. One of the accompanying texts of scripture is Proverbs 28:15: "As a roaring lion, and a ranging bear; so is a wicked ruler over the poor people." Scary but it is the way the US and the UK are going, as your article shows w.r.t. education. We will only escape via the Rapture. Re: the photos next to the image of Obama, that image doesn't talk, I guess but one day (soon) a similar one will, Revelation 13:15. Continuing to pray for you and your family and for the effectiveness of your ministry in helping get the scripture back into the US school curricula. To make it really effective, you need the KJB. It's the one tangible thing on this earth that the Enemy really fears. That's why he's done so much in and out of the church to get rid of it.

Sir;...I can see you are worried about government indoctrination of students, but it is the people who should fear religious indoctrination in our schools that is suffered far beyond the reach of born agin Christianity... Now; I was schooled in a religious institution... Watch the Blues Brothers for an example of my teachers, but in many respects my education was first class, and, indoctrination... We prayed for you other folks, and never gave up on your lost souls... But in public school I came face to face with text books that hated the truth, and told bold lies, or made great omission about history and the economy, and it was because of the power of large school districts in the South to dictate what was in those books...While I am uneducated, I am not unread, and I am even a sort of a Bible scholar... But I know there are more books than the Bible, and there is more to life than religion...It may be that if God is, then God is all; but those who seek political power giving voice to the will of God are doing us all an injury... What does it matter how God works??? If God used evolution instead of creation does that mean his hands were tied??? In fact, when ideology dictates doctrine, when it commands political choices, and invariably settles on one side of the scale it does an injury to itself, and to all...The danger of indoctination comes from those with the doctrine...The danger of wide spread ignorance comes from those who rely of faith and ideology.... The reason those people who believe feel so threatened is because the economy they are taught to support and accept is running them into extinction, and their leaders still support it... You hear their voices on C-span occasionally decrying democratic socialism when it would improve their lives... The Christians in the lions den were no more certain of their fate than the Christian in America today because their religion teaches them only to resist, and not to cope, and not to educate themselves to the true reality of their situation... The world belongs to the educated, and faith alone is not enough of a job qualification any more...Thanks...Sweeney

Scot Penslar. If you have a specific issue with respect to anything I said, feel free to let me know and I will deal with it. In the meantime, believe it or not, America has one great enemy at present and that enemy is God. If you're sceptical, watch how it goes for the USA over the next few years.

I don'tknow how God got into this but I think God is relavent. I was raised by my grandmother for reasons that it would take too long to explain. We didn't have any money and that is not a lie. We went to a pentacostal church and yes they were holy rollers. The things that these people believed in was a choice that they made for themselves. To make a long story even shorter. I now consider myself as an agnostic. I do believe in something whether it is one God or many I don't know. I do think that when Adam and Eve took a bite of that appple they were as gods. The One God gave them a brain that had a concience. People will say why did God do this, or why did God let that happen. What has happened is that God doesn't make things happen and He doesn't stop them. The whole mess that the world is in today was caused by mankind. So don't go blameing everything on Him. The whole thing here is that we were blessed by the same god as the government, we don't need them to tell us how our childern should be schooled> actually we don't need them telling us how to run our lives especially the government that the people have given us today. WHEW; I'M DONE. PLEASE DON'T CALL ME BAD NAMES OR BLAME MY STUPIDITY ON GOD. I DID THIS ALL BY MYSELF.

Dear Chuck Norris, what politicians don't want Taxpayers to know about public schools is how they continue to get elected through all their 'endless money pits!' Not so long ago, you had to own property to be able to vote, which is the only fair way, since it concerns Taxpayers spending all their hard-earned money to keep public schools going, thus, creating more terror on American soil! The voting laws have to be changed - if you don't work and live off social and welfare programs, why should you be allowed to vote? THIS IS CALLED "DISCRIMINATION AGAINST TAXPAYERS!"
Has no one in the world noticed this until now? In the past few decades, character, morals, integrity, principles, and respect have been tossed aside for the politicians' greed, so they'll get elected!
Welfare, housing, public schools, free daycares, free bus rides, social programs, 'No Child Left behind', 'Win-Win', 'Non-Profit Organizations' (stealing Taxpayers money without having to earn it) can be classified as the 'biggest rip-off of trillions of dollars in American history!' All kids born and raised in the social and welfare program environment are having far too many illegitimates, born to single women, by several different men (INCEST,BRAIN DISORDERS, & DISEASE COME TO MIND)! There's no way these people have time to train or discipline as they're too busy hanging out with anyone who will sleep with them. These programs have created rape, drugs, murder and, eventually, jails and prisons. Taxpayers know that all these government programs have bankrupted America and aren't concerned - just occupying a seat in an elegant building, and collecting money they're not entitled to!
While I'm on a roll 'Taxpayers should demand their money back and put their children in a good Christian School so they'll get an education and be good leaders for the future of America -if not, America is doomed!
