Gun Owners' Guide to the 2012 Election

Share Comment

This week, the picture is finally complete. First, the Obama White House decided to leap headfirst into the gun control debate. Then came the response from Congress, which is far more interested in investigating the "Fast and Furious" scandal, in which federal agents allowed thousands of guns to be "walked" into Mexico and furnished to drug cartels. And now the final piece: President Barack Obama has filed his papers to run for re-election.

That in a nutshell is all gun owners need to know about the 2012 presidential election. After two years of avoiding the gun control debate (and violating his own campaign promises to push for additional restrictions), Obama finally is showing his true colors on this important issue. Let's not forget that this is the same candidate who once espoused a total ban on handguns and more recently supported a nationwide ban on right-to-carry laws. And if he couldn't get that done, he said he would support increasing the taxes on guns and ammunition by 500 percent. Now he is trying to be measured about his gun control objectives, using vague and gauzy rhetoric that his handlers hope will be difficult to hang around his neck.

But can there be any doubt that during a second term, Obama would unleash the full power of the presidency toward destroying our Second Amendment rights? He already has appointed two Supreme Court justices who are now on record opposing the opinions that confirm that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to keep and bear arms. And those opinions both came down on the thinnest possible margin, 5-4. If even one justice retires or otherwise departs from the court, Obama will have a clear path to install another opponent of our freedoms and tip the balance against us.

Meanwhile, unbelievably, even while the White House pursues new restrictions on our rights, the bureaucratic apparatus of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has been allowing known smugglers to arm drug cartels in Mexico. By encouraging honest gun dealers to consummate the sales of thousands of guns to shady characters and then allowing the smugglers to move the guns into Mexico unimpeded, one of our own federal law enforcement agencies has been fueling cartel violence in Mexico. These shocking revelations have been brought forward by courageous whistle-blowers in ATF field offices, and the official reaction has been to divert attention and stonewall all inquiries.

But the diversion tactics haven't worked; even mainstream media outlets are catching on to this appalling scandal.

But the stonewalling continues. Congressional investigators gave the ATF until March 30 to turn over the documents they requested. But the deadline flew by, ignored in flagrant bureaucratic defiance. Now the heat is really on because the ATF defied the one committee that can do something about it. The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has issued a subpoena for the documents it is seeking. Officials at the ATF will have to furnish the requested documents and appear in person to answer questions or risk their own incarceration. How bitterly ironic is that? These are the guys who are supposed to be enforcing our laws, not being jailed for their contempt of them.

Some observers of this scandal believe that these documents will confirm the darkest suspicions over "Fast and Furious" — that the illicit gun smuggling was allowed and encouraged in order to drive up the number of guns recovered in Mexico that could be traced back to U.S. gun stores. Anyone interested in driving up those numbers could have only one reason: to justify new restrictions on our Second Amendment rights.

Finally, this past week saw the official filing of papers for the Obama re-election campaign. Decidedly de-emphasized by the White House, this moment nonetheless marks a turning point in the administration. Now the accounting begins.

The Obama machine is detecting a profound buyer's remorse in the ranks of its original supporters — and who could blame them? This president campaigned to end the war in Iraq, but now he's started a new one in Libya. He campaigned to close down Guantanamo, but now he's cleared the way for accused terrorists there to face military tribunals. He campaigned to push for more gun control but didn't bother until it was evident that his administration instead was defying international law and arming drug cartels. About the only thing this president promised and did force through was a massive nationalization of health care, but now he's handing out waivers to political cronies so they don't have to comply.

Despite all this, Obama could easily win re-election as it stands today. And he will be spending the next year and a half working feverishly to guarantee this result. It may well be that the best strategy to defeat him is to ask his supporters whether they have gotten what they bargained for.

An important question for those who voted for Obama to consider is how much harm to our nation was averted by not having another four years of GOP corrupt misrule. While Chuck and his ilk are shouting "Look out! Gun Grabbers!!!" at the top of their lungs, watch who the corporations try to push through. The truth is that very little is going to change in terms of gun control in this country, no matter who is in charge. An extreme win by gun control advocates would be more like moving the ball 3 yards down the field rather than a touch down. And president Palin will not give everybody a machine gun. No real change. Ammo has been flying off the shelves for the last three years because the gun dealers and other NRA types have been warning everybody that "Obama is coming for their guns and ammo". A good deal for the guns and ammo makers and a small bright spot in the economy?
.
But while everybody is blustering about gun grabbers, the corporations are tightening their control of the American economy. Forget guns, the decision that desperately needs to be reversed is the citizens united case which gave the corporations an unlimited voice in American elections. Jobs will continue to be exported, unions will continue to be gutted, the top 1% will increase their share of the pie and the middle class taxpayer will be caring more and more of the load. The GOP knows that they have little to offer the middle class so they always go with the four Gs: God, Guns, Grizzlies, and Gays. Hopefully, enough voters will continue to see through this and ask the hard questions the GOP's corporate masters hope they will ignore. The closeness of the recent Wisconsin Supreme court race is a sign that this may be happening.

Correction: That should read "But while everybody is blustering about gun grabbers, the corporations are tightening their control of the American government". If the middle class doesn't wake up soon, there will be no Social Security, Medicare, or even much of a middle class for that matter.

Foreign occupiers/invaders always confiscate the citizenry's weapons, Chuck, as 1 Samuel 13:19 shows: "Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:" It seems to me that is what you are faced with.

Alan,
Mexicans, Canadians, or the Philistines? Which "foreign occupiers/invaders" do you believe you and Chuck are faced with? The corporations don't give a dam if you have got a gun when they export your job to China.

Mike,The bigger question to Obama voters should be not what harm was averted by voting for him but what harm he is doing to our great country, our liberties and our lives? The answers could fill this page. When we lose our 2nd amendment rights we lose our freedom. A country that cannot defend itself is no longer free.
The unions should be gutted, bottom line, if someone does their job well, they keep it if they dont, they lose it. That's the biggest problem with union workers...the least amount of work for the most amount of money. If you knew you could get fired, you'd work harder and do a better job , when someone works with the security of a union it breeds lazines.
You mentioned the top 1%, would that be the people that pay the most taxes and create the most jobs?? While you are saying forget guns, I hope you remember all those that died defending the CONSTITUTION so that you can voice your opinion.

Karlyn,
Enjoy weekends and paid vacations? Brought to you by the unions. Look to labor conditions in countries where hard work and fear of firing run the work place before you gut the unions. Yes unions have excesses, but they have brought labor conditions a long way.
Why are you willing to pay more taxes so corporate CEOs can fly across country in private jets to play golf without declaring the value of that flight as income? So the corporations can deduct the cost of that flight from their income for tax purposes? Remember when the IRS was going to tax Joe Sixpack for the commute millage as income when he drove the company van home as part of his job? Congress fixed that stupid interpretation by declaring such use of the company car or truck as not taxable income. At the last minute, Senator Bob Packwood had the wording of the new law changed to something less specific. "But Bob", his colleagues said, "That would make the law loose enough to include corporate jets". Sen. Packwood denied that this was the case, but of course it was.
.
The tax law is filled with thousands of special deals for the wealthy, but the right wing is up in arms over the fact that retirement packages for modestly paid school teachers have not been gutted like they have for all of the non-union workers in America. Yes, the top 1% pay the most taxes, but they pay a smaller percentage of their income in taxes than does the typical middle income wage earner, once you include income taxes, ssi, and sales taxes. (Don't take my word for it. Warren Buffet said that he pays a lower percentage of his income in taxes than does his secretary. Mr. Buffet does not agree that this is the way things should be.) If you want to create jobs, give Joe sixpack extra money in his paycheck by declaring an occasional SSI tax holiday. Joe sixpack will not sit on the money, unlike the CEO. He will inject it directly into the economy by spending it.
.
Many ordinary citizens have died at the hands of privately owned guns in this country, but dam few of them were defending the constitution. (I do not include law enforcement officers in that last statement because their gun ownership and usage is not what Chuck and friends are talking about. No one in their right mind would suggest that we disarm the police officers of this gun filled nation.) To conflate the military with citizen gun owners is silly. I do remember and honor all of those who died defending the constitution - members of the United States military or at least members of "a well regulated militia".
.
My point is that it will make little difference on the gun issue who is elected president. Gun control in this country is going exactly nowhere. If the Chuck Norris boogyman Obama suddenly became real and decided to become personally dedicated to disarming every citizen gun owner in the country, nothing would happen except the defeat of any politician who supported him. But while you are busy hugging your gun with relief if the GOP should regain control, the corporations will be busy shipping your job to places without messy workplace rules or workers who expect to get a day off now and again. People like the Kock brothers want you obsessing about guns while they work their class warfare magic. Keep your eye on the ball.

Mark, I understand what you are saying and respect your right to say it. I believe gun control is a very big issue though because if we lose this right, which one of our liberties is next... Freedom of speech? Freedom of religion? The whole purpose is self defense and the option for citizens to stand up against an out of control government. American citizens need to protect their capibility to assemble rapidly for their own collective defense.A well armed populace serves as a brake to those in government who abuse their authority. I personally fear the direction this government is headed. Do I think a revolution will happen in my lifetime, probably not but future generations may find it neccessary. Once you lose a right you never get it back. I think our government has too much power and it continues to grow and we the people become smaller and insignificant. I believe that most gun owners are responsible owners and are not going out and killing private citizens with their guns. The guns that are obtained illegally and in the hands of killers that are out to harm everyday citizens is an entirely different issue. Those people will kill or harm people no matter what weapon they possess. I personally would like to be able to defend myself against those types of people that will still obtain guns and use them illegally long after mine are taken away. You wouldnt throw away your fire extinguisher just because you think you wont need it because you havent had to use it or that someone else will arrive in time to put out your fire.
"Those who give up essential liberty to purchase a temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety".
Our president has flown more in his short time in office than the CEO's. He needs to practice what he preaches if he truly believes in what he tells us. He wants us to spread our wealth around while he is spreading his to other countries where he has taken his several vacations. All the money he has spent traveling and enjoying the perks of his job couldve been a huge boost to our economy had he spent it in his own country. If George W Bush wouldve done half of what hes done, the critics would have been all over him, he was criticized for just going to his own ranch on vacation. I dont believe the Obamas care about the poor people they claim to, they are there to inflict the worst pain on America as they overindulge on the perks of the presidency.
I have a problem with unions and the modestly paid teachers you speak of are a big part of it. I have a problem with tenure. I understand that tenure protects good teachers from an unfair dismissal and I believe we are seriously lacking good teachers in the education system and could use a lot more of them. My problem is that it also protects the bad, incompetent teachers from being removed. Most teachers are out of the parking lot before the school buses leave the grounds. My children used to go to a small town school where the principal tormented the students and protected the bad teachers. They made up their own rules and didnt follow protocol for emergencies and put many students at risk. One teacher she protected had put his hands on several students, he was real friendly with the girls and treated the boys horribly to the point that parents had to pull their kids out and home school them. Another teacher screamed louder than a drill sergeant at students and slapped a few and would constantly degrade them and tell them they wouldnt amount to anything. Yet this principal would go camping with these teachers and because of the friendship out of school would protect them. I know teachers put up with a lot from todays youth and i would not want that job for anything but at the same time they work 9 months out of the year and enjoy their long summers off, snow days and vacations. There are some very good teachers that suffer because of the bad apples but I think today we have more bad apples that know they cannot get fired and are no longer doing the job for the right reasons. If those teachers that i mentioned knew their decisions would have consequences they may have behaved differently. We tell our kids that for every action there is a reaction and that every choice has a consequence but at school they see that it doesnt apply to the teachers.

Karlyn,
I applaud you willingness to defend the constitution, but remember to defend ALL of the constitution. The party that stands firmly against the most trivial of gun control proposals is also the one who grabbed your rights with the USA PATRIOT act and shows no interest in returning them. Precious freedoms, paid for in blood by many a patriot were stolen by the Bush administration, but nobody on the right said boo. Could it be because, while he stole other rights, he let you keep your guns? It is time to demand the return of our rights. I would like to say that Obama is going to develop a spine on this one, but I'm not holding my breath.
.
I am curious. You say that Obama is doing great harm to our lives and liberties. I understand the lives reference. If he get the economic decisions wrong, the consequences are real. (For example, look what came of the deregulation pushed by the republicans and signed by Clinton...) I can find noting that he has done that even begins to compare with the harm done to our liberties by Bush. What are you thinking of when you say that?
.
It sounds like you had a bad experience with a school. When that happens it is time to replace the principle and/or the school board. Destroying the pensions of all of the hard working teachers in your state is not the answer.

Mark,I feel like we have gotten way off of Chucks topic and hijacked his page. Im sorry Chuck. I do believe in defending all of the constitution. Although I understand where the thought process was with the Patriot Act after the horrific attacks of 9/11 and the need to go after terrorists and stop them at all cost , i do not agree with it entirely because it infringes on our rights. Anyone here illegally that is involved in terrorism i say go ahead full speed and do whatever neccessary to stop them. I do believe that is set to expire the end of May. I was never a fan of Clinton for many reasons. I believe he is responsible for the death of our Rangers in Somalia along with many things. Our Banking industry problems date back to Carter with the Community Reinvestment Act. I understand what the Republicans were trying to do because they wanted to promote free market by deregulating the banking industry but it didnt work because it opened the door for Clinton pushing the banks to carry large percentages of sub prime loans..hello freddie and fanny. I have a problem with obama because while other people think hes a fraud i believe he is doing exactly what he planned from the begining. He has always surrounded himself with mentors that are radical people that hate America, our values and way of life. He hates Capitalism, he doesnt believe in the private sector, he doesnt want individuals to succeed. It doesnt matter is Guy A worked himself to the bone to get to where he needed to be while Guy B sat around lazy and uncaring of making a difference in his own life, Obama thinks they should have to be the same and Guy A has to share what he has made with Guy B. Why will Guy B bother to work harder when he knows Guy A has to provide for him?He has created a 5 trillion dollar on budget operating debt not counting his 20 trillion plus for Obamacare, which is defying a federal judge. He has said he will veto a bill that cuts 60 billion from budget, he wants everyone to tighten their belt while the goverment needs to punch new holes in their belt. He has no respect for America and our way of life. The people you surround yourself with speak volumes about who you are..The mentors in his life were against American values and believed in the Cloward-Piven stragedy and i believe he is deliberately overloading our economic and social systems with his debt so that it will spiral out of control and collapse and a new order will be built the way they belive it should be. marxism, communism who knows where itll end up? Our childrens and grandchildrens futures will not know the liberty and lifestyles of previous generations. "A leaders ear must ring with the voice of the people" Obama only hears himself. "If ever the time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in government, our country will stand in need of its experienced Patriots to prevent our ruin"

I really haven't time to respond in any detail to mockery, Mark. If you are not aware of the cross-border warfare in the southwest of the US, I suggest you do some research, likewise into the subject of Lethal Laws. Alan,
Chuck said "That in a nutshell is all gun owners need to know about the 2012 presidential election". If he is incorrect, as I believe he clearly is, that would make matters outside of Chuck's total focus on guns something "gun owners" need to know. When Chuck seeks to have gun owners vote against the best interests of middle America (in my humble opinion) by exaggerating the risk of even minor changes to current gun laws, it is very much on topic to discuss the larger picture. Chuck is the one who made what "gun owners need to know" on topic, not me.
On the cross border "war" issue, what do you propose and, most important, how would you pay for it? I recognize the problem, but it is not clear to me what can realistically be done to effectively secure the border without busting the budget.
Karlyn,
Thank you for your time in clarifying your views on Obama. I will look more closely at the issues you raised to see if I find issues with the man that I have missed. Rational discussion of the details helps to clarify for all parties. Other than Obama care, my impression is that most of your negatives involve who you are afraid that he is, that he has a hidden agenda to take the country on a path that would harm our nation. I understand the concern that his off the cuff "spread the wealth around" comment to "Joe the plumber" can engender. I think it is helpful, however, to remember that the last president said that "They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we”. Of course, just as Bush did not really mean to say that he dreams of harming American, Obama really does not intend to make America into a socialist paradise. I think any actual harms done to the rights of Americans by this president, so far, pale in comparison to those of the last president, but that does not mean that we should not be vigilant in watching what he does. Even if Obama is the middle of the road politician I think he is, power is corrupting.

Chuck Norris. Good article! Whether it be gun control or just 'government control' over Taxpayers' lives, it has to stop! Politicians have 'gained' so much over power and it's time for all of them to be sent away! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! This country needs management and to run like a business! We don't need all these incompetent, corrupt, greedy fat cats destroying anything else Taxpayers have put together, only for politicians to destroy!
TO: DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS - FOR OVER FIVE (5) DECADES and for whatever it's worth, the $6.2 trillion reduction in spending over the next decade IS NOT ACCEPTABLE-IMPERATIVE TO DO THESE CUTS IN NEXT TEN (10) DAYS! $14 trillion (and counting) you spend like money grows on trees; therefore, $14 trillion must be cut immediately! At no time, have Taxpayers heard the words "We're going to cut our salaries, benefits, and retirements!" As for all politicians, for what you've done to America, time is of the essence to sell all of you a one-way ticket to GITMO (or to the foreign countries you've sold America out to), take all your assets to pay off the trillions you've blown to wind, and send along everyone on the take along with you! Government involvement in the private business sector; that is, drug, insurance, auto, banks, and manufacturing companies must come to an end! By the way, the latest article someone wrote about America is a 'SERVICE COUNTRY!' I wonder if they know the only thing America is servicing is 'Social, Welfare, Unemployment and the incompetent, corrupt and greedy politicians!'

Mark, I definitely agree with you too much power can be corrupting (brings us back to the need for the 2nd amendment) but you also have to look at the persons character. If they are not a person with integrity and moral values that makes the danger even higher. Next time you listen to Obama speak, dont just hear the words he says, listen to what he is really saying. Not to go off on another topic because i know you wont agree but i feel that Bush and his father before him were both men of integrity. You may not like have liked their policies but i believe they were honest to goodness men. A lot of people criticized George W for the way he spoke but Id rather hear a man speak from his heart and mean what he is saying then have a man that says everything other than what he means with fancy speeches and false words. All we can do as Americans that are lucky to have been born here is to try and protect America and those who attempt to destroy her.
