6 Reasons Obama-Care Is Bad Medicine
No one denies that in an affluent country such as our own, it borders on tragic that millions do not have some form of health care. I feel for those Americans; I really do. I agree that health care reform is needed badly in America, but I don't believe the bill of goods called "universal health care" that is being pitched presently by our president contains the solution. In fact, I believe it is bad medicine for America.
—First, universal health care unwisely is being rushed.
Should sweeping health care reform be enacted in a world-record time? Just like the stimulus packages and bogus bailout baloney, Obama-care is being shoved downed America's throat (without explanation) and propelled like a ramrod through Congress (without examination). I call it the Obama blitzkrieg: create crisis; crunch numbers; and cram legislation. The fact is the president continues to sell the program, but there is still no single plan he or Congress is ready to sell.
—Second, universal health care clearly would drive our country deeper into debt, which is being progressively purchased by foreign powers without any concern by Washington to stop it.
Obama said in his nationally televised news conference, "Health care reform is not going to add to that deficit; it's designed to lower it." How can he say that when they haven't even settled on a single health care plan? When he doesn't know the far-reaching implications of offering it in every community across the nation?
The president is struggling to base his rhetoric in fiscal reality. Even according to the Congressional Budget Office, the Senate version of the health care legislation "would result in a net increase in federal deficits of about $1.0 trillion for fiscal years 2010 through 2019." Is that what you call good fiscal responsibility within an economy and government that already is bordering on bankruptcy?
—Third, universal health care would impersonalize health care and ration medical services.
Government takeover of health care also would allow Washington to use "comparative effectiveness research" to dictate to doctors which treatments they should prescribe and how much they should cost. That in turn would lead to rationing of health care services.
Canada and Europe already have proved that national health care translates into national nightmares, with a plethora of new government regulations and new systems of rationing medical attention. Under government-run services, personal health care would transform into more impersonal harassment. More government means more menacing minutiae running our lives.
—Fourth, universal health care ultimately would limit the competitive market of health care.
And what about for the taxpayers who would pay for the program? Would having universal health care encourage their future productivity? Further taxing members of the upper class (which would mean further penalizing their productivity) certainly would not provide incentive for Americans chasing the American dream. And their added taxes obviously would trickle down to consumers, as well. Or do we just assume they would pay 47 million Americans' universal health care out of their surpluses?
You don't create competitive markets by creating monopolies, yet that is exactly what government-run universal health care would prevent: competition. If government should do anything, it should crack down on medical insurance monopolies. If government wants to regulate one more thing, it would be better to regulate the medical insurance companies, not the American people.
—Fifth, universal health care ultimately would transform legislators into quasi health care practitioners.
With government-sanctioned universal health care, legislators would become quasi medical practitioners because they would lead and guide the government-controlled medical boards, personnel and policies that would oversee the program. That would include abortive and end-of-life counsel and services. Federal politicians would rely upon relatively few chief physicians (appointed mostly by them), who in turn would oversee and implement the medical policies and procedures that they felt were best for the country.
—Sixth, universal health care would increase big government, and America would continue on the slippery slope toward socialism.
The nanny state is not our solution to better health. Our government already provides two medical coverage programs: Medicare (for senior citizens) and Medicaid (for low-income citizens). The president mentioned in his speech last week that those two programs are the greatest contributors to our skyrocketing deficit. So why not reform, improve and enhance those programs rather than create a third (or fourth or fifth) government medical bureaucracy called "universal health care"?
What is needed in Washington is a truly bipartisan group that is allowed an ample amount of time to work on a compromise health care program that wouldn't raise taxes (for anyone), regulate personal medical choices or ration health care.
Why wait for Washington? Go to http://PatientsUnitedNow.com to learn more about how you and your local community can reform health care and keep your options for doctors and medical care. And mostly, go to the Web site of Dr. Betsy McCaughey at http://www.DefendYourHealthCare.us. She is a health policy expert and former lieutenant governor of New York and actually has read the entire Senate bill on universal health care. She is disclosing many hidden details within it that are not being discussed with the American public.

Dear Chuck Norris, Taxpayers know that ObamaCare is ruining America! Of course, they have the best! They get it all from the Taxpayer who gets nothing in return! Everything politicians puts their hands on would be endless money pits! Bigger government is most certainly not the answer. If the textile and manufacturing laid off workers would just ride around and look at all the empty, boarded up buildings, they would be asking "Why should we furnish you with an elegant office, best of healthcare, best of everything, when you've left us with nothing - it's time to empty out the buildings we've paid for, and sell you a one-way ticket to the foreign country you've sold America out to!" If you're a Taxpayer, you should be fed up with Obama, his administration and bragging about his healthcare! His favorite “This Healthcare isn't about me. I have great insurance and so does every member of Congress.” Wouldn't you, as a Taxpayer, wonder why politicians have better healthcare, doctors, salaries, and retirements? If American Taxpayers are smart, they'll go back to “Pay as you go” system for medical expenses, insurance, and everything else, that includes stopping politicians and insurance companies from taking your last penny! “If you don't work, have never paid social security, live off social and welfare programs, why should you receive anything that Taxpayers have worked for?” America doesn't need bigger government nor anything else controlled by a radical and socialist government, let alone National Healthcare! ‘Fair Tax', to include property taxes, and ‘pay as you go' for doctors and hospitals, would cut theft and tons of useless paperwork. Trillions would be saved! At no time have Taxpayers heard the words “We, the politicians, in order to pay off trillions we borrowed without Taxpayers consent, are going to reduce our benefits, salaries and retirements to $12,000.00 yearly!” This is one actual insurance/government billing. Check out your ‘Explanation of Benefit' regarding Medicare and your private insurance. If your doctor billed for $233.00, Medicare paid $76.20, and your private carrier said it was OK to pay $19.05, this should tell you about hidden costs? The following was sent to me and I'm sending it along! ===================================================================================== IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU ARE REPUBLICAN OR DEMOCRAT! Take Social Security for instance! "I HEREWITH FIRMLY STATE THAT I WILL NOT VOTE FOR ANY POLITICIAN, REGARDLESS OF THE OTHER ISSUES, IF HE DOES NOT SPONSOR AND SUPPORT THE FOLLOWING LEGISLATION. THAT INCLUDES EVERYONE STANDING FOR NEXT ELECTION. LET US SHOW OUR LEADERS IN WASHINGTON "PEOPLE POWER" AND THE POWER OF THE INTERNET. . and GET A BILL STARTED TO PLACE ALL POLITICIANS ON SOCIAL SECURITY, CUT THEIR SALARIES AND RETIREMENTS TO $12,000.00 YEARLY. You see, Social Security benefits were not suitable for persons of their rare elevation in society. They felt they should have a special plan for themselves. So, many years ago they voted in their own benefit plan. In more recent years, no congressperson has felt the need to change it. After all, it is a great plan, but just for them spending more and more ot Taxpayers money. For all practical purposes their plan works like this: When they retire, they continue to draw the same pay until they die. Except it may increase from time to time for cost of living adjustments.. For example, Senator Byrd and Congressman White and their wives may expect to draw $7,800,000.00 (that's Seven Million, Eight-Hundred Thousand Dollars), with their wives drawing $275, 000.00 during the last years of their lives. This is calculated on an average life span for each of those two Dignitaries. Younger Dignitaries who retire at an early age, will receive much more during the rest of their lives. Their cost for this excellent plan is $0.00 NADA..! ZILCH... This little perk they voted for themselves is free to them. You and I pick up the tab for this plan. The funds for this fine retirement plan come directly from the General Funds; "OUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK "! From our own Social Security Plan, which you and I pay (or have paid) into, every payday until we retire (which amount is matched by our employer). We can expect to get an average of $1,000 per month after retirement. It's time to "Jerk the Golden Fleece Retirement Plan from under the Senators and Congressmen!" Put them into the Social Security plan with the rest of us Then sit back.... And see how fast they would fix it. It would be changed within the day! America is now an enslaved nation with trillions of dollars in debt and all because of deceit and greed. I'm quoting John Adams - “There are two ways to conquer and enslave a nation. One is by the sword, the other is by debt.” Surely, you remember history and the Dictator that said “We'll destroy America and never lift a finger!” If this doesn't wake you up, nothing will!

The NHS, National Health Service, over here, equvalent to what your president is proposing over there, was started in 1948 by the WW2 generation to ensure health care of the highest standard for their succeeeding generations. It worked well for a long time and although, obviously, taxpayer funded, the contributors clearly had vested interests. For the last twenty years or so, regrettably, it has not only become top heavy with bureaucracy but in various parts of the country, swamped by illegal immigrants who immediately but wrongly qualify for free health care the moment they fetch up on these shores. I suggest the same will happen to any Obama-care scheme, though without any significant initial period of efficiency like the NHS enjoyed. Moreover, owing to government profligacy and inefficiency, the NHS is now facing an approximate equivalent of a $US 25,000,000,000 cash shortfall over the next ten years, according to the NHS Confederation. The government is now trying sell off the NHS to private contractors, who'll run it for profit and plunder the developing world for medical staff whom they can pay for more cheaply than home staff, callously leaving patients in the developing world to die from lack of even such medical care as is available there. That will probably be the long-term prospect for Obama-care as well.

I don't agree that health care should be competitive like other markets. I don't believe that we should go back to the "pay as you go" system either, because even if you do work and pay taxes, sometimes it takes all of your money to put a roof over your families head and food on the table, and gas in the car to be able to get back and forth to that job. I believe the best thing that could be done for health care in America is to regulate the cost of it. Most doctors have enormous amounts of college loan debt, so they look for the highest paying jobs, which are at the offices and hospitals that charge the most, which increases what every national citizens insurance must pay for health care, which raises everyone's insurance premiums, so forth and so on. The best thing the government could do is to pay off medical school graduates' debt and set a pay scale based on geographical area for doctors, nurses and other hospital and doctor's office staffers. This would even out the overall cost of health care with the only differences between offices and hospitals coming in the form of overhead from utilities and payments on loans. This would allow doctors to know in advance what they would be making anywhere they went in the country. This plan would help to alleviate the amount of medical bills turned over for collections. It would allow small communities like the one I live in, to be able to afford more doctors, who are better, can see more patients, and make better health care decisions based on what's right, not what makes more profit for their office and themselves. MOST IMPORTANTLY, the people of the USA would still be able to choose whatever doctor they needed too, knowing that they were in the hands of one that wanted to be in that town or city, not the one who was the most cheap, or had the little dollar signs popping up in their eyes!

Dear Chuck,
I love your comments and articles. I find it amazing that this seriously underfunded and underplanned "plan" is even under consideration. Why is it such a necessity to go to a socialized system when there has not been an honest attempt to reform healthcare in the free market? I have worked in healthcare and in health insurance and I fail to understand why we cannot create insurance groups so that free-market society can flourish. The whole basis behind national healthcare (besides unnecessary government control in our entire lives as well as outragious inflation) is to create a large group to spread out the risk, thus making premiums affordable. If you look at the entire group of 1099 employees, can we not create large groups of insurance and real estate agents, then large groups of lawyers, bankers and investment specialists, groups of electrical and mechanical engineers, groups of all employees who do not currently have a large enough group insurance plan and spread the risk and have affordable premiums. Right now my agency has someone in a group plan with a group of one member. Down the street there is another agency with 2 members in their group. No one wants to think outside the box and look at alternatives. They are only wanting to "change" and their only model for change, because they can't think up their own ideas, is to do what other countries are doing. Why not be innovative and come up with good sensible solutions.
Also, another reason why Obamacare is bad medicine is that if socialized medicine is a reality you will see the largest spike in unemployment that this country has seen and will ever see again. That being said, there will be enough members of society dying from lack of good care, I guess it will eventually balance out!
Thanks for your posts! I look forward to reading more. Let me know if you plan on running yourself. I'm sure you have a valid birth certificate to share!

Re: larry hanlin
If you have no insurance and go to a hospital who takes in Medicare patients, you will get a bill. If you can't pay the bill you will be put on a payment plan, go to collections and quite possibly go bankrupt. I work in a hospital, so I know this first hand as welll. I witnessed a young man who was a welder who didn't take the insurance his company offered him because he was young and healthy and didn't feel he needed it. Well, his income level was high when he developed cancer and now he is bankrupt because when you have a high income you don't qualify for assistance. He made a poor choice to save money each month. That is what insurance is for. You buy it when you don't need it so that when you need it you have it.
