ABC's Porn Pinup for Teenage Girls

Comment

Sometimes it's hard to measure the distance between the supposedly established, respectable press and the seediest corners of hardcore pornography. On March 1, ABC's "Nightline" celebrated a porn star named "James Deen" (real name: Bryan Sevilla). The apparent "news" hook is his role in a forthcoming movie with the ever-more pathetic Lindsay Lohan.

ABC reporter Cecilia Vega sold Deen as a 27-year-old hazard to teenaged girls. They're boasting that he's found a new frontier of porn consumers, "some of them so young we couldn't even interview them on camera. Their parents had no idea that secretly they have a crush on a porn star. It is a phenomenon that not even the man at the center of it fully understands, but it's one that he fully defends." Insert ooooh-ahhhh track here.

Nothing sells like sensationalistic sex. Just call it "news" — and hide the smirk.

Deen took the usual porn star's usual "sex-positive" stance: "You know, there's a 15-year-old girl, an underage girl, an underage guy, an underage person that is viewing a scene that I'm in or any sort of porn, chances are they're doing that because either they're curious, they're horny, whatever it is, they're sexual enough that it is something that they desire, that they crave, that they want. And it's not necessarily a bad thing."

This is not Ted Koppel's "Nightline," watching him yammer with an expert about Iranian mullahs. This isn't professional journalism. It's crotch-centered tabloid fare for the MTV crowd.

Vega turned to Deen's vaunted girl fans for more praise, like Christina Ahlsen, now 21: "He looks like somebody that I could see at, you know, a coffee shop or something and actually approach." She also likes porn: "My first legitimate encounter with porn was when I was in fourth grade and I searched Playboy. It was early adolescence, yeah, and that's, you know, a very curious stage." Vega then added: "There are literally thousands of women out there who share Christina's enthusiasm for all things James Deen."

It quickly becomes apparent that this ABC story is not a warning against Deen. It is a commercial for Deen.

Anchor Juju Chang began the segment by insisting "James Deen, of course, is not his real name. It's his porn name, and it could soon be a household name." ABC shows you and talks about Deen's blog, lingers over Deen's Twitter page with 111,000 followers, as Vega cooed, "And if the visitors to his site are underage, well, Deen says that's not something he can control."

By story's end, Deen says he's found himself in trouble in "direct messaging" mode on Twitter with teenaged girls. You can't "DM" girls without "following" them on Twitter first. Nowhere in this story does ABC note this kind of Internet fraternizing is exactly where everything went wrong for ex-Congressman Anthony Weiner.

Vega reported Deen's appeal is not just his looks, as "porn's guy next door," but that "The young fans tell us they're drawn to Deen because he's different, a porn star who holds hands with his leading ladies, who gazes into their eyes, even shows a little romance."

Anyone spending five minutes on Deen's blog could see ABC's spin was ridiculous. Click on an ad and you're quickly led to Deen's catalog of work on Kink.com, where Deen is not "showing a little romance." He's slapping the spit out of his leading ladies while he dominates them sexually.

There's even a film for sale titled "Christian Speed Dating — Innocent Girl Gangbanged on Film." That's in case you love the idea of four men gang-raping a virginal Christian girl. The actress — who we're assured is over 18 but doesn't look like it — is being strangled in the promotional picture. So much for holding hands.

Here's the longer sales blurb: "Donna Dolore develops a diabolical plan to get unsuspecting Christian girls who are saving themselves for marriage to lose their virginity on camera for all to see. After luring them in with promises of finding a soul mate she offers them money to do an interview about their experience for promotional material. Trusting and naive Jodi enters a hotel room to film the video, only to be ambushed and f—-ed in every hole possible."

ABC News never located an actual parent who might disapprove of Deen and this kind of filth. They never found an anti-pornography expert or a social-conservative think-tanker for a single discouraging word. Put simply, ABC was a porn star's pimp.

Sir;... I cannot imagine the sort of crack you have had your head stuck in for most of your life; but for all of mine, judging by the movies, the demivirge has be a fact of life... The lures that youth finds too charming to decline prove a temptation old goats can only deny by demeaning... I will do neither...
I will ply my plaint against sour minds and bitter hearts to honor the futility of love... Who actually sees Pretty Woman and believes for a moment that whores and johns do ever fall in love??? Who believes that cynical rich people can ever grow a heart and become moral??? When a little age preys upon the stupidity of young women, a greater age pities them; and who with sense would want them???...
A woman as an equal partner expects nothing she cannot work for, can cook and clean and balance a budget not because a man expects it; but because everyone one else will, and run her down with a garbage truck for her faults...
The unhappiness of families, and the palpable failures of adults powerless in every aspect of their lives as revealed in their actual lack of authority over their own children is not lost on those children, and is not without effect...
Young women want love for the same reason that young men do, because having no authority over our children, we are left with bribing them, or denying them love, and if we have not enough to bribe them, we deny them...When we have enough to bribe we feed their desire for power over their others with sheer animal attraction... The demi virge is a fact of life, but it reflects adults so much better than adults possibly can... The sincerest form of flattery it may be; but there is no better insult in all the world, no barb, no slander, no mocking as all we have done, done better... And what we know youth needs to know we cannot possibly teach...
Relationships are not hard, but impossible, and life is worse, hazzardous... Kids are failures at relationships, unable to work themselves in or out without danger and drama... For boys and girls alike, the fantasy is the same, to find some one who fits sexually who has their certain way, that feel, that charm, that easy way with love that honors every virtue, helps every weakness, encourages every strength, and forever denies the self loathing most of us have ingrained into us through socialization...
Prostitution, or porn have the advantage of a cheat: power, and integrity without being victimized by the promise of commitment... If it is all about money, a deal, it is not about love and the great danger of a broken heart is minimal... What is the nature of the relationship??? Is it financial??? Is it sexual??? Is it romantic??? Is is barely masked dominance with a threat of violence???
It is the desire for love that throws people into bed, and belly up to their need for intimacy and comfort... What kids don't know is the fact they most want to deny with casual, fun sex, -is how easily we bond... If you could manage the honesty of your emotions, you would say: I need love... Who does not need love??? But the very admission of love is one designed to reveal your weakness... Love is a door to your soul with your heart as the doormat...
Why not say: Kick me I'm stupid... Instead people deny and say: fck me... What a violent word that is, and what violence it does to ones soul... Our weakness is our only strength, and our strength is our worst weakness...Better to say: I need love; and open your heart for it, and if abused, then their loss- than to deny...To deny love is to deny self... We bond with sex, some times without, if we are human, and at all healthy, we bond... And to lose that caring touch, to pull away, to push away, to deny love to others and self is the most destructive thing we can do to ourselves short of suicide..
We grow onto each other, and into each other and share the same life, and the loss of it is not short of injury...Our most common disease in this society is loneliness... Tell Aynn Rand that when celebrating the individual she is celebrating loneliness... People are not made that way, and children are right to believe in love and seek relationships...But; they know they are terrible at it... They know they can do the sex and attraction thing... No one can rob them of their natural desires, their emotions... But the skill of getting into a relationship and safely out is lost to them...In fact; it is lost on most of humanity because there is no safe way...Honesty is as close as we can come to safe...
The sex for money thing though a complete denial of the emotional aspect of intimacy is a fantasy only because it seems so free of the hazzard of a broken heart...As offensive as you find it, it is the people like yourself making normal sexuality so taboo who change it into an article of commerce... For those who have given their lives to the possession of wealth, there is no greater desire than to own as trash some charming fairy of youth and beauty to filth up...They too see love as a weakness...But what point could wealth ever have but love, and how unlikely is it, that love being all virtue will fall for some crude vice??? In the certainties of life stands that fact bold and brassy: where the priceless is found a price tag will find it... Not God in heaven, nor the devil in hell does not suffer commerce on their image, how ever fanciful it may be...
Sex is by nature given as an article of faith, of politics, and commerce as consideration for the same sort of promise and performance...The good of sex is not even sweet beside the happiness of a great love relationship...That is what kids want... That is what everyone needs... It takes professionals to really make it filty, and they stand on each side of the issue... Look at yourself, visiting porn sites, and advertizing for them while acting all sanctimonius...It was just research...Right. .. Remind me to never shake your hand without without sanitation near...
Thanks...Sweeney
