The Tax Man Cometh

Share Comment

This week Caesar came for me, demanding my tax obligation. As a 1 percenter, my burden was substantial, but I'm not whining. I love my country and understand it needs money to fulfill its obligations. So the check is in the mail.

Thirty-five years ago, I was broke, having just graduated from Boston University with a master's degree in broadcast journalism. I was lucky enough to get hired as a reporter in Scranton, Pa., at $150 a week. One problem: I couldn't pay my rent on that. So I picked up an additional $80 a month writing dopey gag lines for "Uncle Ted's Ghoul School," a Saturday night monster fright fest. Stuff like: "Listen, Drac, here's what's at stake."

Over the years, I worked hard, took chances, moved all over the country and finally attained affluence. Along the way, I always felt I was paying my fair share to the government. I still do, and I'm getting a bit teed off by President Obama implying I am not. Hey, Mr. President, the massive debt is partly your fault. I had nothing to do with it. This is not a give-take situation. I've taken nothing from the government.

The problem for Obama and the big-spending liberal movement in America is accountability. The outgoing doctor in charge of Medicare, Donald Berwick, told the press that about 30 percent of all payments are wasteful, meaning either the health care money is stolen or used for unnecessary treatments. In New York State, Medicaid investigators are fed up with the "pay and chase" philosophy sanctioned by the pinheads in Albany.

Pay the dubious claims and chase the perps later if enough proof is developed that they are cheating.

Obama is big on using "income inequality" as a campaign slogan. And it does exist in America. Folks without a good education or a technical micro-skill are not likely to earn good money. Unions are on the decline, and the public sector is collapsing economically. No longer can the taxpayers afford lavish pensions and overtime payments. The working class is getting hammered all over the place.

So, the Democratic Party wants more of my take-home pay diverted to them so they can give it to those not earning very much. But the Obama administration, like others before it, refuses to watch how the money is dispatched. Therefore, billions of dollars are abused every year. Medicare waste alone costs the country $168 billion per annum.

There comes a time when the truth must be told. The federal government is not built to run massive entitlement programs or health care or even the U.S. Postal Service, which is now going bankrupt. Washington simply cannot administrate to 300 million people no matter how much money pours in.

I work hard and want to pay my fair share. But I don't want my hard-earned dollars wasted by lazy, incompetent politicians pandering for votes. Call me crazy.

This is what one concerned American said on a blog over here. "Tomorrow will tell the tale for the USA. Please, everybody pray for the USA, that we are able to right this ship and set the course correctly again. We have been headed straight for the rocks for the past two years, and we are perilously close to total disaster from which there is no recovery. If this opportunity is blown, it will just about be all over for the USA, so we must get it right." I pray you do get it right over there, Chuck.

Something else, Chuck. Given the moral and spiritual degeneration of the USA over the last century (like that of the UK), I am reminded of the following quote, incorrectly attributed to the 19th century French political philosopher and historian Alexis de Tocqueville.
But true, nevertheless.
"I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbours and her ample rivers - and it was not there...in her fertile fields and boundless forests and it was not there...in her rich mines and her vast world commerce - and it was not there...in her democratic Congress and her matchless Constitution - and it was not there. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, she will cease to be great."
As Solomon said in Proverbs 14:34, "Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people."
A lesson for Britain, too, I believe.

Good Article, Chuck Norris. I've just finished writing the following and thought your readers might want to read. We have a real problem with all local, state, and federal politicians/workers, bigger government, salaries, incompentcy, corruption, and greed. It isn't going to get any better until there is a REAL TEA PARTY, NOW IS IT?
=========================================================================================================

ARTICLE “TIME FOR ‘FAIR TAX' WITH NO HIDDEN AGENDAS!”

After Voting in Jamestown (Guilford County) today, I noticed several things that need to be changed
immediately, as these are just some of the problems with politicians/government workers.
1] Jamestown can vote for ‘Board of Education' in Guilford County, but can't vote for District 2, 4, 6, 8
which is still ‘Board of Education'! This is violation of Taxpayers Civil Rights!
2] Jamestown can't vote for Guilford County Board of Commissioners in District 1, 2, 3, 6, 9! This is a
violation of Taxpayers Civil Right!
3] Voting polls do not require you to have a photo ID! Amazing! I asked about this, since so many people
vote in early elections from all over Guilford County! Looks like you would need a valid Driver License, a
current address and proof! I was told this wasn't needed nor required! This is very questionable!
4] I asked if these ‘touch tone' voting machines had a paper vote that's recorded. Seems to Taxpayers these
‘paper votes' should have been counted, one on one, in 2008 election, since so much went on! I was told
they do, but are all on paper rolls. If this being the case, then it wouldn't have been too difficult to count all
the 2008 votes!
5] Voting Laws must be changed! Taxpayers know there's too many problems with voting and has been
allowed to go on far too long! Hard-working Taxpayers votes are canceled by the people voting that don't
work, never intend to work, live off welfare and social programs, and yet, they're allowed to vote? Don't you
think politicians should be held responsible for bankrupting America with these ‘endless money pits'?
6] ‘FAIR TAX' would eliminate property Taxes, Public Schools, Welfare and Social Programs, period! Hard-
working Taxpayers should be able to use their money to educate their children and grandchildren in a good
Christian School! State and federal governments take sales and gas taxes from each county, using for who
knows what, now they've started another Ponzi Scheme. Property taxes are now being taken from each
county and being sent to another county! This, too, is more than questionable! Time for ‘Fair Tax' with no
hidden agendas!
7] Taxpayers are fed up with paying for attorneys to represent people that's committed crimes! This is
another ‘Violation of Taxpayers Civil Rights and Discrimination' and should stop immediately!

No more allowing politicians/workers to receive exorbitant salaries and retirements. Politicians, for their
so-called public service work, should not be able to earn more than $12,000.00 yearly, they should be made
to put their assets into social security to cover the IOU's they've put in this vault! They should be put on the
Social Security System, that they've bankrupted, and receive absolutely the same benefits as the
Taxpayers. No more paying FICA, 401K, Insurance, trips, cell phones, autos, allowances, and all the other
freebies Taxpayers don't know about. This money doesn't belong to them and it's absolutely abuse against
our children and grandchildren.

We must bring back ‘honesty', ‘common sense', ‘respect', ‘morals', ‘character' and ‘principles' to local,
State, and Federal government! Maybe after over five (5) decades of decline, this can be accomplished if
put into action immediately!

While I am on a roll, the aforementioned is absolutely the only way to balance the budget and keep
America from becoming a Third World Country, as ‘America is no longer the Super Power', due to these
incompetent, corrupt, greedy fat cats, now is it?

Mr. Norris has an actor's ability to spin a yarn. Notice that the GOP gets none of the "credit" for the bill that deregulated the financial industry that they wrote. Just vague blather about "under Bill Clinton". Does Mr. Norris call for the full re-regulation of the financial industry? Why no, because the GOP thinks that regulation is a dirty word. WARNING!!! They have not learned a dam thing since they created this mess. They hope that the voters will buy the "evil, socialist" democrat crap instead of really looking at the roots of the mess. Unfortunately, the voters seem likely to buy this load of garbage.
Mr. Norris, just where should the cuts be made to close this budget mess? How much must we cut medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and the military to get there? If you believe that some mystical "waste fraud and abuse' pot of money is going to do the trick, think again. If you eliminate ALL other spending, there is still not enough in the budget to cover the big four. (Yes, the democrats aren't facing up this any better.) Of course giving hundreds of billions to the extremely wealthy by extending the Bush tax cuts to ALL will make the task that much harder.
The other matter is that we are passing on more than fiscal deficits to our grandchildren. We are gutting the incredible infrastructure that our parents left to us, paid with hard earned tax dollars. I speak of roads, bridges, universities, parks, water systems, etc. In our greed - cut taxes again, and again! - we are allowing the great nation we inherited decay to third world status.

Mr. Mark - The roads and bridges in our country hardly look third world to me... No arguments about regulating wall street, but you need to understand that we are not paying as we go. If we do not pay as we go then things will collapse and your third world scenario is more likely to come true. Right now it's the Dems that have tripled our deficits to record numbers in the past two years, this is why they lost 60 seats earlier this week. Republicans are not the answer, but at least now the Dem's cannot continue to drive the fiscal boat straight over the waterfall.... The government has enough money. If they need more then they should take it from somewhere else. Period. More taxes will ensure more waste. How do you answer for social security and medicare costs? Last time I checked those boxes are empty with a big I.O.U. note inside.... Now the answer is to raise taxes? No way, that stinks like "Bull S!@$."
