Eight Is More Than Enough

The stunning announcement that a California woman had given birth to octuplets was greeted warmly in some circles. The birthing doctors were all smiles, and the media hyped the "human interest" part of the story. Eight babies! Wow!

But behind the high-fives lies a very troubling situation. This may be child abuse at the highest level.

Here are the facts: The mother, Nadya Suleman, is a 33-year-old single mom already raising six young children in the small home of her parents. Nadya is a health care worker who, according to her mother, became pregnant with all the children through in vitro fertilization.

Six was not enough for Nadya, so last spring she allowed multiple embryos to be implanted in her womb. Subsequently, the octuplets were born on January 26.

In Great Britain, Nadya and her doctor would be under arrest. There, the law permits only two embryo implants at a time. But in California, there are no rules at all. Fertility clinics and the doctors who make big money in them can do anything they want.

So now Nadya has eight new babies all of whom weigh less than three pounds. The littlest is about a pound and a half. Doctors say there is a strong likelihood that some, if not all, of the children will experience significant health problems growing up.

When the babies finally leave the hospital in suburban Los Angeles, they will be taken to a three-bedroom house in Whittier, Calif.

Seventeen human beings will be living in that house. Eight babies will have to be fed, washed and cared for around the clock almost simultaneously.

Who will pay for that? Chances are, the taxpayers. Nadya has little money and her parents have filed for bankruptcy. By the way, the hospital bill for the octuplets and mom is estimated to be around $1.3 million.

But Nadya seems to have a plan. She has hired a "spokesperson," a woman named Joann Killeen. Killeen has been running around various TV shows telling the world what a great person and mother Nadya is, what a joy to be around she is. When asked whether the mother of the year wants major money to tell her story, Killeen dodges and weaves.

This is child abuse of the worst kind and few seem to care. The taxpayers will wind up paying for much of Nadya's irresponsibility, and the 14 children will pay an enormous price, just wait and see.

Meantime, a callous media and a largely apathetic state medical system will watch to see whether it will be Oprah, Barbara or Katie to give the babies their first starring TV roles.

America is a great country. This is the worst of it.

I don't think that is what God intended when he said "Be fruitful and multiply." No woman in her right mind would do this therefore I conclude she is not in her right mind. These fourteen children will be raised by an unstable woman. She may not stop with fourteen.

What a brilliant conclusion. I truly don't know what I would do without your wisdom. Do you have any advice about how to tie shoes?

The doctor who treated this woman has escaped the media scrutiny that the mother will have to endure for the foreseeable future. His/her name has thus far not been disclosed. Without medical intervention, this woman would have had little to no chance of becoming pregnant ONCE, let alone several times, and she certainly would not have had octuplets! No doctor should be allowed to implant eight embryos into a woman!

I hope Nadya makes millions of dollars on these babies. She risked her life to carry them to term. The babies need what any baby needs times 8. They didn't ask to be born. They didn't choose their mother or choose to live in a cramped house. If you punish Nadya, you punish the innocent kids, too!

If you don't want this woman and her 14 children draining the state welfare kitty, then you're going to have to warm up to the idea that she has to make money somehow. I don't see anything wrong with Nadya bringing in some money. She's going to need it.

Sir; Your article is mother abuse...All too typical of republicans to talk of the blessedness of conception out of the sin of fornication only to produce another dirty little welfare cheat.... We all we know no sin was involved... The poor woman craves the love of children.... Certainly that is a sign of stark raving madnesss...Children are as incapable of love as republicans... They care only for themselves... The think the world revolves around them... They think the world owes them a living...If children could vote the republicans would never be out of power...Instead of being critical of that woman for having many children; concentrate on giving babies the vote.... And I agree she had too many....It is quite possible that all will grow up to resent their family who should be a lesson in love and caring... In a word, any one of them might grow into another Bill O'reilly.... Isn't that cause enough to despise the wiles of womanhood??? Thanks...Sweeney

"...If children could vote the republicans would never be out of power..."
You sure said a mouth full! Ever hear the expression "out of the mouth of babes" Being a republican, I can appreciate that comment...out of context, of course. Kids know BS, they deal straight with the situation at hand, and they speak their minds, honestly.
Anyhoo, just thought I would throw my opinions out there...
1. Invitro should have the same stipulations as adoption
2. There needs to be a limit to implanted embryos.
3. There should be a minimum age limit for having children.
4. Welfare recipients should have to take manditory drug tests to recieve money and food stamps.
The last one is just one of my pet peeves. I get drug tested for my job, and I work for my money. Welfare recipients do neither.
