A Nation in Decline?

Share Comment

Just in time for Independence Day, the bible of the American left, The New York Times, continues to opine that the United States is a "nation in decline." Hoping to see a Democrat in the White House, the newspaper has been hammering home that theme on its editorial pages.

The Times bases its claims on two primary situations: The negative view of America abroad and income inequality at home. So, let's take a look at the supposed "decline."

Overseas, the world is largely a mess. Africa remains a chaotic cauldron of corruption, China continues its authoritarian rule, and there's no letup in the India-Pakistan hatred. Would you like to live in those countries?

Russia continues to lead in the league of corruption, Mexico is fighting a brutal war against its own drug traffickers, and South America remains mired in poverty. Call me crazy, but I don't see many immigrants pounding on those doors.

Of course, many liberal Americans blame the USA for the world's misfortunes and side with those who, for whatever reason, verbally downgrade the United States. However, considering the sad state of a world that will not even unite against a nuclear weapons-seeking Iran, our so-called "decline" is a terrible misreading of the global picture.

Against all odds, U.S. forces have almost single-handedly defeated Islamic fascism in Iraq, one of the most complicated battlefields in history. In Afghanistan, U.S. and NATO troops continue to hammer the vicious Taliban on every front. The only reason those fascists are operating is that Pakistan protects them. If the Pakistanis would ally themselves with NATO, the Taliban would be wiped out.

Back home, the Bush administration has succeeded in making it ultra-difficult for terrorists to kill us. The FBI and other federal agencies have been effectively reorganized, and the nation is much safer for it.

That doesn't sound like a decline to me.

But what really has The New York Times furious is the gap between rich and poor Americans; a gulf that is now being exacerbated by escalating gas prices that rob workers of take-home pay. Never mind that it is largely liberal policies that have shut down much U.S. oil exploration and made America even more dependent on foreign oil; the left believes capitalism must now be "tempered" by the federal government. That means income redistribution through higher taxation on wealthy Americans.

In this month's Harvard Magazine, the liberal position is clearly stated: "Americans, on average, have a higher tolerance for income inequality than their European counterparts. American attitudes focus on equality of opportunity, while Europeans tend to see fairness in equal outcomes."

"Equal outcomes," of course, means socialistic entitlements, something many European countries have embraced and a philosophy The New York Times deeply endorses.

So, it comes down to this: The committed left believes America has been too aggressive in fighting the war on terror and not aggressive enough when it comes to government-mandated economic and social engineering. Thus, in their view, the country is in decline.

But that's opinion, not fact. There's no doubt that times are tough right now, but from this vantage point, the American people are still as creative and hardworking as they've always been. Our pinheaded politicians have mucked it up recently, but we are certainly not a nation in decline. With another Independence Day upon us, we remain strong and the world's greatest hope.

I really enjoyed your article, thank you. Last night, the 4th, I listened to patriotic music and watched and listened to the fireworks as they lit up the sky. My homage to "The" day was to watch the movie Pearl Harbor w/the great documentary at the end of the movie. I've been pessimistic, living under an administration that promoted fear, not patriotism. It was uplifting watching the movie and the documentary and the everyday heros. Listening to leaders who knew how to inspire all American's to work together and to fight and sacrifice to advance victory. Reminded me, as your article does, that there is grit and gristle and God in the minds, hearts, and spirits of American's. I believe that the biggest mistakes of the Bush years was to promote fear instead of patriotism. I honestly feel Bush was a "terror monger" President, and all those that advised him and supported him as they spread fear throughout the land are guilty and I will be so glad to see them all go. We needed a strong, mature leader, we had Bush. While they were promoting terror, they turned blind eyes and deaf ears to the checks and balances that were in place to protect the country and its citizens. The fiasco of the hurricanes, the corrupt financial sector, the devalued dollar, the pissing contest w/the Koreans and Iran, ad nauseum. I'm ready for America to take back that ridiculously, wonderful patriotism and again take real pride in our country, in our flag, in ourselves, and in our President.. I look forward to a President, an administration, I can respect. It will take a strong, steady hand to guide this nation back on course and put an end to all the debates and start providing answers and direction. I want the next President to rally the American people so we can again be proud of our country and our President and not be stopped from swearing allegiance to God and country in our schools and places of worship. And yes, I believe everyone living in the United States, no matter who, no matter what, should be compelled to swear allegiance to this country. We've been bashed by Bush, but we're not in a decline, we're just catching our second breath

The O'bama group must be very happy about the Jackson remark. It seems to me as a (agnostic) Jesus Christ has risen again in the body of Barry O'bama. Like Jesus he is somewhat of an enigma to many American's as Jesus was to the people of his time he just didn't have cable which O'bama has, but being a good public speaker he has the ability to deliver the message of hope. I suppose he not only received education and training for the political stage but also for public speaking and religious training from our wonderful higher educational institutions and his church respectively. So the no matter what is in the news about him its about him and he has the ability to spin the good and the bad to his benefit. Some times it appears the black machine will use whatever it needs to have O'bama seated as the leader of the United States of America. Even if it means Jackson needs to say something negative about O'bama that appears to be done with the belief nobody can hear him. So what happens....the news goes on and on about this statement against O'bama. Forever in the news good or bad all we hear is O'bama. Yes his policital machine is very happy for the exposure and so is Black America for their messia. What ever anybody says about Bush, Cheney, or McCane at least we know where they came from and where they want to take America, security, prosperity, and peace. O'bama???????
