A Gay Time at JCPenney

Share Comment

Every Halloween, New York City residents are greeted by homosexual parade marchers dressed to impress bystanders with a message that "gay is good." Some folks take the parade in stride, some are offended by more than a few outrageous displays, and others simply could not care less.

That parade is a microcosm of how Americans, in general, feel about the gay movement. And those who oppose the in-your-face tactics of some homosexuals do have a legitimate gripe. They simply want to be left alone. They don't want to see explicit displays in public that offend their moral or religious point of view.

Enter Ellen DeGeneres and JCPenney. The Texas-based department store has hired DeGeneres as a spokesperson, and that is royally teeing off a conservative group called "One Million Moms." On their website, they are calling for JCPenney to "replace Ellen DeGeneres as their new spokesperson immediately and remain neutral in the culture war."

The Moms go on to say DeGeneres is not a "true representative" of the type of families that shop at JCPenney.

While I sympathize with folks not wanting to deal with homosexuality, I think the Moms are wrong. DeGeneres is an American citizen. She has committed no crime. If she wants to promote equality for gays or gay marriage, that is her constitutional right. She should not be dismissed from anything.

But the Moms have rights, too. They don't have to shop at JCPenney if they believe the company does not hold their values, and they are doing nothing wrong by making their disenchantment known.

As long as they don't try to hurt DeGeneres or any other individual, I have no problem with the Moms.

In the 1950s, Sen. Joseph McCarthy got a whole bunch of Americans fired from jobs because he said they were communists. There was even a blacklist in Hollywood that banished perceived leftwing job seekers from employment in the entertainment industry. That was awful and flat-out un-American. In this country, you have a right to be a communist, and nobody should punish anyone for their political beliefs.

In my opinion, Kim Kardashian is a far worse role model than Ellen, and the Million Moms might want to check that out. Kardashian is all over the media peddling an aggressively self-involved image that is anything but healthy for teenage girls. In fact, there are scores of media people who are celebrated for bad behavior. If the Moms want to be consistent in their outrage about dubious behavior, they are going to be very busy.

So let's leave Ellen alone and allow the marketplace to dictate exactly what Americans believe is worthy. That is the American way. Witch-hunting against certain people and groups is not.

.. I can't believe I'm not agreeing with Bill ... I just came to realize that he is simply another that doesn't stand for anything ... He sticks his finger in the air to see which way the wind is blowing before he speaks (or writes, as the case may be).
Given the human animal, one can always find "someone worse" to point at -- thereby diverting attention like any good illusionist. I'd be willing to wager that, if given a survey card at the door, the very major majority would check "not homosexual" if given the direct question. This, in and of itself, confirms that the "million moms" (never heard of them) are correct in their claim.
This phase we're going through of claiming any adverse comment to be "bullying" is, like most attempts at testing borders, is going too far. If it's strong enough to stand on its own, it doesn't need Bill to protect it. BTW, Bill ... it only weakens one's position to use subterfuge and misdirection rather than fact. But then, I guess if no facts can be found and you still want air time ... that's all you can do, eh?

If my husband and I get divorced tomorrow, it won't be because two guys got married in Boston, or because Ellen DeGeneres did anything at all. Gay people in general, and Ellen in specific, do not have any effect on us.

If O-Reilly were a serious journalist, he would be aware that Senator Joe MeCarthy was not a rogue "witch hunter", but rather working with a list of communist infiltrators developed by the FBI in his investigations. The Communist Party newspaper "The Daily Worker" of 4/15/1950 expressed, "Communists are keenly aware of the damage the McCarthy crowd is doing." Every allegation was eventually proven true, in spite of Arthur Miller's (and the public school system's) work to historically discredit him. Unfortunately, the otherwise healthy Sen McCarthy died a mysterious death at Bethedsda Naval Hospital, and was thus unable to defend himself against reputation smears. Bethesda was also the same hospital where fellow whistleblower James Forrestal "committed suicide". No autopsy was performed on McCarthy. Further info can be found in the book, "The Assassination of Joe McCarthy."

I agree with O-Reilly on his Ron Pual like assessment above so this instance he is Not a Pin Head but a Patriot. But with all the SERIOUS problems our nation is facing, issues of who is gay and what they are doing is not worthy of our attention. I wish i had a word of the day to better articulate how very little I care about homosexual issues and how pissed I get when politicians waste tax payer funded time on that instead of stopping our nations slow demise.
