The Real Obama

Share Comment

The White House that shook in Tuesday's earthquake has been home to its present incumbent for 32 months. President Obama wasn't around to watch the furniture shake. He's up on Martha's Vineyard for the third year in a row with Michelle and their two daughters, bunkered in a $25,000-a-week holiday rental on a lush 28-acre estate in the little town of Chilmark.

He's keeping a low profile. Words like "standoffish" roll petulantly off the tongues of the island's liberal elites. They were spoiled by Bill Clinton, who spent six presidential vacations on the Vineyard. No renter, he. Bill freeloaded on rich pals and party donors, mostly synonymous.

No one could ever accuse Bill of being standoffish, though he once confided to Vernon Jordan that he preferred Jackson Hole, Wyo., to Martha's Vineyard as a vacation spot since it was impossible to get "pussy" in the stuffy Massachusetts resort.

Obama's standoffishness includes, I am informed by one knowledgeable Martha's Vineyard local, failure to show at an exclusive fundraiser. As well as a party of his friend Henry Louis Gates, the Harvard professor whose July 2009 spat with the Cambridge police once prompted the normally hyper-prudent Obama to say the cops had acted "stupidly" — probably the most vivid off-the-cuff judgment of his entire presidency.

He did show up for one event, but without Michelle. The presidential excuse for her no-show was that he and Michelle didn't "want to leave the kids alone." Alone? One of the houses on the Chilmark estate is occupied by the Secret Service, another by close aides. You'd think at least two could have been press-ganged into child-minding duties.

Like many presidents trying to have a holiday, Obama has drawn fire for lounging about on the Vineyard for 10 days while ordinary Americans battle hard times, and Hurricane Irene threatens the Atlantic seaboard.

So, as with other presidents, his pressman claims 50 percent of Obama's time is spent doing the nation's business, much of it hunkered down with his counter-terrorism advisor, John Brennan. Presumably, they are reviewing intelligence reports that claim Al-Qaeda is planning something really big for Sept. 11, 2011, to mark the tenth anniversary of the destruction of the Twin Towers.

As president, Obama is not doing well. It's not just a matter of the 53 percent disapproval rating, reported Wednesday by Gallup. After two-and-a-half years, people are beginning to come to settled opinions about their president, and many of these aren't flattering.

In 2008, liberals and most leftists were deeply in love with Obama. They genuinely believed the promissory notes about a better America that he strewed along the campaign trail and has since welshed on at a rate of well over 90 percent.

The face-off over the debt ceiling, at the start of this month, was the final straw. Take a man I have known for many decades, William Broyles, former Marine, lifelong Texan Democrat, speech writer in the Carter White House, former Newsweek editor, co-creator of "China Beach," "Apollo 13" and "Cast Away."

Ten days ago, Bill wrote a furious Newsweek column headlined "The Oval Office Appeaser." Bill is normally a courteous man, not one who likes to hurl moldy cabbages from the balcony. I've never known him to write more angrily.

"After each betrayal, after each terribly bad bargain, Obama comes out waving a piece of paper, a one-sided agreement to appease the Republicans — peace in our time...

"A despair grips America today, a cold fear that our best days are behind us, that we are adrift and powerless. Yes, the Republicans are to blame.

But so is a president who treats core American values as bargaining chips, who won't fight for anything, who refuses to lead. It turns out hope does matter... Americans aren't inspired by well-meaning weakness. We like strong leaders, particularly in desperate times."

Obama is a very curious fellow. I don't think any writer thus far has got the measure of the man. Take the Obama White House. From the news-leak point of view he presides over the tightest ship in living memory. Leaks, corridor gossip, my-side-of-the-story confidences of policy-makers battling for the president's ear, depth charges planted by such powerful cabinet members as Hillary Clinton? None of the above. This is the White House of a man in total control, contrasting markedly with Clinton's fitful supervision of the shambolic White House of his two terms.

But Obama, where it counts, is not in control. Republicans, regarded as certifiably insane by a lot more Americans than disapprove of Barack Obama, face him down and he leaps to do their bidding, even as they kick him in the teeth for not doing more. He tugs his forelock to Wall Street, the defense industry, the oil companies, Monsanto, the agriculture industry, Israel. He is an appeaser, as Broyles charged. And when the dust of battle rises, he cuts and runs.

Last week, the Democrats got a nasty shock when The New York Times ran a story reporting on the battle for Anthony Weiner's Brooklyn district. Weiner resigned from Congress on June 16, done in by Twittering photos of his penis to women, none of them his wife or even a constituent. The Republican challenger is apparently making a strong showing in this traditionally Democratic district. The Times quoted life-long Democrats expressing their discontent in virulent terms.

There are plenty of Obama loyalists out there. I know leftists who still forlornly try to make a case for the man and will stay true to the end. But if they vote for him next year, it won't be for any positive reason, like what sent them delightedly to the polls in 2008, searching for hope. They'll gesture to Gov. Rick Perry or some other Republican challenger and fall back on the "lesser of two evils" argument.

But will this work with the sort of blue-collar union people and independents who voted for Ronald Reagan in 1980 because they thought Carter was a wimp who couldn't handle the economy?

Bill Clinton survived incompetence and scandal because enough Americans felt like somewhat disillusioned brides after two or three years of facing the real thing across the breakfast table. "Dump him? For who? Anyway, he's promised me he'll try to do better." He's a flake and a liar, but he's our flake and our liar.

No one feels like that about Obama. He's not a man who elicits mass affection. People whose vote he courts are genuinely confused. Does he believe in anything beyond raising a billion dollars for the 2012 campaign? Now he's on the trail again, assuring people without jobs that he'll put them back to work. It's a very tough sell.

Meanwhile Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who entered the Republican race, only a week ago, is surging against his opponents. Wednesday's Gallup poll has him in a commanding lead over the 'moderate' Republican Mitt Romney, with 29 percent saying they are most likely to support Perry. Former front-runner Mitt Romney at 17 percent, Ron Paul at 13 percent and Michele Bachmann at10 percent are next, with four other candidates at four percent or less.

The conservative Perry's done this by staking out fierce positions, just as Reagan did against Carter. It doesn't matter that the opinions grate on the sensibilities of the liberal commentariat. He's not after their approval. Perry's a tough campaigner, not like Bob Dole, whom Clinton had the luck to face in 1996.

These days, apropos Obama, some lines from a Hollywood classic, "Touch of Evil," float into my mind:

Welles: Come on, read my future for me.

Dietrich: You haven't got any.

Welles: Hmm? What do you mean?

Dietrich: Your future's all used up.

I realize this is your grand opus on Obama and his allies, but let's look at McCain's alliances and ask yourself which is the greater threat to our country. "McCain... a 26-year Washington insider who is now the (corporate darling)and trusted candidate of America's corporate establishment. He's such a reliable conformist to the corporate agenda that, at last count, 177 lobbyists for Big Oil, Wall Street banks, telecommunications giants and other industries form the very core of his campaign. The campaign manager, chief strategist, top economic advisor, foreign policy director and fundraising chairman — lobbyists all."

Corporate establishment is actually a now defunct word. Considering the damage they've done to our country and the global economy corporate Terrorists is actually more accurate. If McCain and Palin get in you'll have Corporate Terrorists at the helm; with Palin, forget freedom of religion and separation of Church and State. Whatever rights and religious freedoms you think you now have will be stripped away due to the passage of laws that suit not only their political, but also their religious agenda.

How can you question Barack Obama background and policies, and voting record? When John Mccain was involve in the Keating five in 80 -90 that we current dealing with today . When John Mccain was at the bottom of his class in college with a C average from Yale? Sarah Palin went to four college in six years and failed out of , then returned to after making up some course work at a community college, and no one questions your intelligence or commitment to achievement but she is qualify to be Vice President. We do not need another eight years or another four years of the same.

I read your biography, and I too am from North Carolina. I was born in 1946 and lived there until I left for college. I read you article in my local paper and then went online to see who you were. Your personal dislike for Obama is apparent and therefore in my opinion disqualifies you as an unbiased writer. McCain has things in his past that are not so wonderful, and the thought of Sarah Palin as President is what is really scary to me. Shame on you, Mr. Sowell, for your political mud slinging. This is not what the American poeple want to hear at this point. We have more important things to worry about than a 60's radical or a loudmouth preacher.

Re: Brenda Lee

It's obvious you're not used to truthful, impartial HONEST reporting. Talk about mud-slinging, either you can't read or have a poor interpretation of the media's attack on Palin & McCain. Sowell is right on target. He presented something most columnists shy away from--TRUTH!

Mr. Sowell - thank you for some truth and honesty in this campaign. The American people for Obama should know about his past and how he really feels about the USA. His wife - in her initial campaign speeches - talked about how they dislike America... how much more do people need to hear. I fear for this country's future if this man - who constantly changes the "truth" about himself - is elected. God bless America and help us!!

Mr. Sowell - thank you for some truth and honesty in this campaign. The people of America who are for Obama need to know the real truth about the man and his background. He constantly changes the "truth" of his past - what kind of man does that really make him and how does that qualify him to lead the USA? His wife during her initial campaign speeches stated many times that they disliked America = how much more do people need to hear to know that this man is NOT for America - but for himself. I fear for this country's future should he win. God bless America - AND HELP US!!

What in Palin's past would ever bring you to the conclusion your freedoms are threatened by Palins religious faith. Her very high approval numbers (higher than congress or the pres) in Alaska- (hardly known for being part of the Bible belt) I believe indicate a person that has not become so removed from those that she SERVES and is also understanding of how to utilize resourses and get out of the way of progress. Is the concern you have for Palin's faith the same concern you have for Louis Farrakkahn and the Nation of Isalms support of Obama?.Or perhaps the angry hateful anti American statements from THE PULPIT of Wright's church?? And it's Palin's religious faith and alliances that threaten and scare you?

Re: Holly Campbell, when a country nominates and elects someone based on his or her religious beliefs and not on their qualifications to lead and serve, yes I do worry. I worry when a highly qualified candidate comes on the scene but is judged "not right" because he is pro choice or believes government shouldn't interfere in people's private lives and a religious vendetta is waged by the aggressive Christian right against them. I worry when minister's and preacher's tell their flocks not to vote for a candidate (no matter the qualification) simply because he doesn't believe in burning witches or worshipping dolls. An exaggeration, but you get my meaning. I remember when JFK was running the many concerns that he was "a Catholic". The reason another candidate couldn't make it this election "he was a Mormon". Joe Liebermann, "a Jew". God help Tom Cruise if he ever decided to run for office. Oh no, a Scientologist, we're all going to hell! Our country has fought to relieve other countries from the bondage of religious tyranny, yet most don't recognize it on their own doorstep. Christian's have been unable to tame their flocks due to their own failures. In retaliation, they now attempt to put into law their religious beliefs. I want no part of that. Give a people good government with personal and civil freedom and watch how quickly the cream rises to the top. We are a nation of many beliefs, founded on freedom from religious tyranny. Those who don't believe as you do realize the danger. Do I fear Obama and his beliefs, of course I do, but his beliefs are not part of his political agenda. The McCain Palin team are together exactly for who and what Palin represents to the Christian right and I fear their hypocrisy and pseudo-Christianity much more.

Mr. Sowell:
Thank you for the article. The issue at stake is the character of the man. The people a person chooses to associate with shape much of their character. As you point out Barak Obama choose to associate with some shady characters. As so little is known of him you are correct his past could be a valid indicator of his future. Our future.
I ran across a video on YouTube recently. It is called “The Obamaland Song – A Tale of two Poverty Producers”. A point it makes is that both McCain and Obama are creators of poverty. Obama even more so than McCain. A great deal of Obama's support comes from poor people who seem to assume he is going to increase the size of their government checks and make it easier to get on the dole. I wonder what they will think if they find that instead he plans to legalize the illegal aliens and put them on the dole. The middle class will have more people to compete with for the jobs that are still here. The poor will have more people to compete with for government benefits. Of course McCain plans to legalize the illegal aliens as well but does stop there. The video also points out there will be no change anyway if we put the same people back in Congress. The link to the video is below. Following that is the description of it copied from YouTube.
“The Obamaland Song – A Tale of two Poverty Producers”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_YDw6-ttFk
“Those who are playing Washington games have been identified. They are selling out America to please illegal aliens. They feel the poverty that transfers from Mexico to the United States with each new illegal alien is a small price to pay to break the stalemate between the major political parties. They see a vote that can be purchased with a path to citizenship and tax dollars. They are playing a very dangerous Washington game.
Poverty is also created when wealth is transferred out of the country. Not drilling for oil domestically does this. Obama has been consistently against domestic drilling. Amazingly the only bill he wrote in the Senate was to recommend that the President transfer even more wealth out of the country by reliving poverty in foreign countries. Don't we have poor people here that need relief? Furthermore, both Obama and McCain have consistently voted to allow poverty to continue walking across the Mexican border. Obamas actions do not match his speeches. His record has been consistent in making things worse for the poor and middle class by creating poverty. He is very much a part of the reason the Democratic controlled Congress has done such a poor job these past two years. In tough times, people are easily fooled by the promise of hope and change from eloquent, speakers. Could this promised change be the change of fools?
Our representatives can do anything they want. After all the damage they have done, we still don't throw them out. Once legalized, perhaps the illegal aliens will throw them out if they don't give more money to poor Hispanics than they do to poor Blacks and poor Whites. Hey maybe illegal immigration will be good for America. We will finally get change.”

Liz, it is stunning that you want to disqualify McCain from being president because he has served in the senate for 26 years. Did you consider the fact that Joe Biden has been in the senate for 36 years, and is only "a heartbeat away" from the presidency? You also point out that big corporations are what make up McCain's campaign, but you neglect to point out that Obama's own political allies are entrenched in real estate CORRUPTION (including Obama himself). With regard to the Keating scandal, John McCain was not found guilty of any wrong doing, and for the next 20 staying as far away as possible from anybody or anything that might be corrput. He was disliked by many of his republican colleagues, and beloved by the democrats, and yet as soon as he gets the presidential nomination he is suddenly "dangerous", "not to be trusted". So which is it with you liberals? Was it that you all had poor judgement of him in the past, or the obvious: You used him and YOU ARE ALL HYPOCRITS. Thomas Sowell is a perfect example of somebody ALL AFRICAN AMERICANS should look up to. Consider this: JOhn Mccain in the senate for 26 years: was loosely tied to a scandal and then proven to have done nothing wrong, followed by another 20 years of major accomplishments in the senate. OBAMA: in the senate for less than 2 years, and has been tied to at least two scandals (Rezko and Acorn), plus the shadiest of friends from "the neighborhood". Joe Biden: Lied on multiple occasions about his accomplishments in law school, plagiarism on multiple occassions. I don't know Liz, you do the math....

Odd; there are a bunch of comments up from 2008.

But now, in August 2011, Obama's been in office 31 months, not 32. (24 + 7 = 31)

Except for the error in basic arithmetic, it's a good column. I was very happy on Election Night in 2008. Candidate Obama was very impressive.

Now -- it's not just the President, it's the bulk of Democrats in Congress. I have an utterly crazy idea for them: try fighting for the things you allegedly believe in. Fight for them, and don't stop. Whether you win or lose those battles, you'll gain some respect.

It would behoove the Democratic Party to actually put forth a champion of the American family

Poser Obama ain't it, Baby

Middle America, that showed it was 'progressive' and voted for the
fraud and sellout that Obama has become, is now in recoil mode as the
economic destruction has continued unabaited.

'Anybody but Obama' will be the call of America

Dem Party knows this and is DYING to run HILLARY

She is really the Dem Party's Only chance, really

Obama is what was

RON PAUL all the way (yeah he's crazy, but not a poser like Obumer)

Interesting column and closest to the truth about Obama. Obama is a fraud that is purposely trying to destroy America as we know it and turn it into a third world country. Why is the question. Does he and his wife hate America that much. His phony statement saying he cut his vacation short to speak to the people over hurricane safety is a blatant lie. He left because he was in the storm's path! HE has been on vacation (along with Michelle) since he has been in office! MaCain in a RINO in my book and Palin is smarter and more experienced than Obama by a long shot. (Obama failed the bar exam due to fraud and that indicates he had someone sit in for him. Michelle failed also.) HE is NOT an eloquent speaker. i.e. Everett Dirksen and Jack Kennedy were eloquent speakers. He is good at reading a teleprompter. I don't even want to spend the time discussing him, especially to libs who are not capable of rational, logical thought! America is clearly tired of him...one term president for sure!

----A Harvard/Princeton 'innie' --son of Globalists CIA linked Ann Dunham,
and almost certainly linked via the same to some heavy establishment bloodlline
( going by his looks we'd guess it's RED China sellout artist AVerill Harriman).
On top of that, and behind even his Bilderberg attendance ---his very first job was

In short, Obama, like the Bushes, and Clintons ---is yet another RED China TREASON OP
