Two Creators cartoonists to participate in national protest Feb. 10
Two of Creators Syndicate's cartoonists, Charlos Gary of Cafe Con Leche and Working It Out and Stephen Bentley of Herb and Jamaal, will be participating in a Feb. 10 protest taking place on on comics pages across the country.

Both cartoonists, along with 10 other African-American comic strip artists will duplicate a strip originally created by Cory Thomas, cartoonist for Watch Your Head, for their February 10 strip. The goal of the action is to satirize the idea that comic strips starring minority characters are interchangeable.

Overall, Editor and Publisher estimates there are about 15 black cartoonists in national syndication to newspapers, among more than 200 artists in the field.

Eric Deggans of tampabay.com discusses the difficulties faced by black cartoonists in his blog, and says, "I believe these cartoonists are actually canaries in the coalmine, reflecting more intensely a difficulty to break new talent which affects the entire comics industry."

Keep an eye on the Home Page of Creators.com for more news about the upcoming protest, and be sure to check out Cafe Con Leche, Working It Out and Herb and Jamaal -- and ask your local paper to branch out and run them all!
