Newspaper Answer Readers' Demands and Returns B.C. to Comics Pages
Back in May the Charleston Post and Courier in Charleston, South Carolina, dropped the long-running comic strips B.C. and Shoe. After enduring weeks of reader outcry, the paper decided to bring back one of the ousted strips, and held a reader poll to determine which would return. The clear winner was B.C., and the Charleston residents are now enjoying its return.

Loyal B.C. reader Lolly writes:

"In May this year our newspaper, The Post and Courier which prides itself as "The South's Oldest Daily Newspaper" decided to remove "B.C." and another strip from our paper and replace them with others.  Well .... Big mistake !!

Since then, the paper was bombarded with complaints and pleadings to bring back "B.C.".  Finally in August Charleston voted; and "B.C." prevailed!  Although we know Johnny Hart is not here with us ... he lives on in Charleston, S.C.!  And we are able to resume our daily routines again, while awaiting Growing Gold!"

As the case of the Post and Courier illustrates, readers have the power to influence decisions about their comics pages. Here are some excerpts from letters to the editors decrying the decision to remove B.C. (The full letters can be found here.)

"B.C., especially, is a very enjoyable comic to read, and … most of the others are quite boring. But at least we were given the joy of reading B.C.
I can't imagine who in the newspaper was allowed to make such a decision.
It certainly was a poor one. We want B.C. back."

"… Several viewings have led me to the conclusion that neither F-Minus nor Luann are equivalent to Shoe and B.C. in terms of insight, thoughtfulness, subtlety and general amusement value.
Moreover, I think that several other cartoons might have been considered for deletion before selecting Shoe and B.C."

"Please bring back Shoe and B.C. They have wit, introspection and humor, which the new comics do not have whatsoever.
I need B.C. and Shoe to round out my morning read of the newspaper, as it helps to keep me from going insane."
