Tuesday, October 6Happy German American Day! This is the anniversary of the day in 1683 when 13 German families from Krefeld near the Rhine landed in Philadelphia. They quickly founded Germantown, Pa., the first German settlement in what is now the United States. Although German Americans have traditionally been among the most numerous of America's ethnic groups, the holiday died out around World War I (imagine that) but was revived in 1983. Arctic Circle, a Utah-based fast-food chain, claims to have invented fry sauce, which is one part ketchup and two parts mayonnaise. You can make it spicier by using barbeque sauce instead of ketchup, and some recipes end up tasting like Russian or thousand island salad dressing.
Bajan pepper sauce is extremely hot. Try it on some flying fish, but you may want to wash it down with some Mount Gay rum. Where are you?
