Latin Libraries: Yes, it is true. The Vatican Library, developed by Pope Nicholas V in 1451, does have an enormous collection of incunabula. We refer, of course, to documents produced before 1501. You may have thought we meant dirty books. The Vatican has those, too, but it doesn't have the world's largest such collection. That appears to belong to the Kinsey Institute in Bloomington, Ind.

Egyptian Libraries: Alexandria's fabled library is mostly fabled for being burned to the ground, over and over, by the Romans, Christians and Muslims. Nobody knows how many volumes it had, but some estimates run as high as a million scrolls. In 2003, the library was finally rebuilt and reopened.

Of note, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina is the only library in the world with a backup of the Internet Archive, a historical record of the entire World Wide Web.
