The Ebola virus is named for the Ebola River, in the D.R. Congo, where the virus spread to more than 55 villages in 1976. This probably ruined any tourism industry along the Ebola River. In fact, the Ebola virus is a lot like the Marburg virus, which was named for a city in Hesse, Germany. This happens a lot. The Norwalk virus may be associated with cruises, but it is named for an altogether pleasant community in Ohio, where it appeared at Bronson Elementary School in November 1968.

Turkish Europe: Turkey is the only NATO country with a majority Muslim population. This makes Turkey a valuable ally in the conflict in Iraq, which it borders. But Turkey was originally added to NATO because it bordered the old Soviet Union.

So did Norway, in fact. This opens the debate as to whether Turkey, which straddles two continents and once ran the Balkans, is a European country or a Middle Eastern one. The E.U., which Turkey wants to join, is badly divided on the matter.
