Flying the Flag: This is probably the Cousin Oliver of American holidays, not least of which because it isn't an official holiday. For a while, Flag Day was a state holiday in Pennsylvania, since local girl Betsy Ross was credited with inventing the flag. Except that she didn't. It was probably designed by Francis Hopkinson, who was New Jersey's delegate to the Second Continental Congress, which officially adopted the flag on June 14, 1777.

Blasted Unicorns: For creatures that don't exist, they have a lot to answer for. We'll let the Freudians explain our fascination with animals with single long horns, but it should be no surprise that legends associated those horns with aphrodisiacs.

Since there were no real unicorns, other horned animals would be slaughtered and those horns sold in place. Today, you still get urban legends linking powdered ivory to sexual prowess.
