Watch Out for Wendigos: Canada's Algonquian people once scared one another with stories of the wendigo. When humans ate human flesh, they would transform into this emaciated zombie-like monster, which would stalk the forests. Oddly, some Algonquians developed what was known as wendigo psychosis, which was a fascination with cannibalism, although this problem seems to have declined along with their traditional lifestyle.

Evil Birds: In ancient Rome, a strix was a vampiric crow. The legend survived into the Middle Ages. It appears that the strix was influenced by spooky encounters with owls.

And in fact, earless owls make up the genus Strix, so named by Linnaeus in 1758. The whole family of true owls is called Strigidae and there is a related Dungeons and Dragons monster called the stirge.
