Trivia Bits for Wednesday, August 12

SF Awards: Naturally enough, the Hugo Award is shaped like a rocket. That's what you might expect from a prize, awarded annually since 1955, at Worldcon by the World Science Fiction Society. A competing award, the Nebula, is a block with an embedded glitter spiral nebula. It was first awarded in 1965, and it is presented by Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. The first Nebula went to "Dune," which also won the Hugo. Indeed, it is quite common for a novel to win both.

Who Writes This Stuff: You might think all SF writers are geeky white guys. Not true. But then again, SF fans have their own stereotypes.

Hard SF writers are supposed to be white right-wing men obsessed with macho individualists and their gizmos. Particularly the gizmos. But then again, Samuel R. Delany is not only black, but bisexual. His work explores social themes.
