Trivia Bits for Thursday, August 6

Happy 200th, Alf: Today would have been the birthday of Alfred Tennyson, had he somehow managed to survive two full centuries. Named poet laureate in 1850, he is best known for "The Charge of the Light Brigade" about a battle during the Crimean War. But he also gave us "The Lady of Shalott," a version of the King Arthur story called "Idylls of the King," and the expression "better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all."

45 Years of Voting Rights: Also on this day, back in 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law. This act outlawed literacy tests and other practices that kept African-Americans out of the ballot box.

Despite that, the law became controversial in 2006, when it was extended for a further 25 years. Some feel that such a dramatic display of federal power is no longer needed, but Congress and the White House felt otherwise.

Who would Lohengrin have tossed the ball around with on Father's Day?

A) Beowulf

B) Erik the Red

C) Percival

D) Thor

Previous answer: Johann Rudolf Wyss, creator of "The Swiss Family Robinson," was also Swiss.
