Muslim Observances: Ramadan begins tonight at sunset, as we enter the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. This is the month in which Muslims believe the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. To mark the occasion, Muslims refrain from eating, drinking and smoking from sunrise until sunset. Because the Muslim calendar works differently, Ramadan begins about 10 days earlier each year.

You've Got to Come Back a Star: When the musical "42nd Street" opened in 1980 at the Winter Garden, it was doing so at a location just eight blocks from the actual 42nd Street, which intersects Broadway at Times Square. That part of the street houses some of the theater district's best-known palaces, more so since the city has closed down the red-light district and grindhouse movie houses for which the street was formerly famous.
