Trivia Bits for Saturday, September 19Grand Muftis: The British appointed Haj Amin al-Husseini to be grand mufti of Jerusalem. This probably was not a good idea. He was a staunch anti-Zionist who fled Palestine ahead of his arrest, and in 1941, he flew to meet Adolf Hitler to discuss those darn Jews. The mufti even agreed to recruit Muslims for the Waffen-SS. When the Jordanians took over part of Jerusalem after the war, they formally replaced the mufti, who died in Cairo in 1974.
