Trivia Bits for Monday, September 21

Battling Alma: Yesterday marked the 255th anniversary of the beginning of the Crimean War, when the French and British teamed up to beat the Russians in a battle at the River Alma. The battle made "Alma" a popular girls name, but even more oddly, the battle's veterans from the Isle of Man decided they would each name one of their sons Alma, who in turn would name one of their sons Alma and so on. As near as I can tell, subsequent generations of Manx men decided this was a dumb idea and stopped doing it.

New Nation, New Name: Many of Israel's early leaders adopted new names in their new country. Polish-born David Gruen became David Ben-Gurion, which means "Son of the Lion." And Golda Mabovitz became Golda Myerson when she got married, and then in turn became Golda Meir, a Hebraization of her married name.

Incidentally, the full name of Cairo-born Yasser Arafat was Mohammed Abdel Rahman Abdel Raouf Arafat al-Qudwa al-Husseini.
