Trivia Bits for Monday, September 21Battling Alma: Yesterday marked the 255th anniversary of the beginning of the Crimean War, when the French and British teamed up to beat the Russians in a battle at the River Alma. As near as I can tell, subsequent generations of Manx men decided this was a dumb idea and stopped doing it. New Nation, New Name: Many of Israel's early leaders adopted new names in their new country. Polish-born David Gruen became David Ben-Gurion, which means "Son of the Lion." And Golda Mabovitz became Golda Myerson when she got married, and then in turn became Golda Meir, a Hebraization of her married name.
