Trivia Bits for Monday, September 14

You've Got Trivia: Elwood Edwards was the guy who said, "Welcome," "You've got mail," "File's done" and "Goodbye" for AOL. (You may remember AOL: It used to send out free drink coasters that also had computer programs on them.) He got the gig after his wife heard that the service now called AOL wanted to add a voice to its user interface. Apparently, he didn't get paid, but he did do a cameo on "The Simpsons."

At the Tone, It Will Be Time for Trivia: Jane Barbe owed her career to her miserable spelling. Too embarrassed to show her work to her boss, the copywriter read it, instead, and he decided to use her in the commercial.

In 1963, she recorded messages about the time and weather for Audichron (now called ETC), and that led to work doing the same sort of thing at AT&T. Pat Fleet took over after Barbe retired in 1981.
