Obscenity on Screen: Marianne Faithfull has a small role in the history of obscenity, and we don't mean that urban legend about the Mars bar. She is credited with being the first person to say in the f-word in a major movie, 1967's "I'll Never Forget What's 'Isname." The movie also had distribution problems because of an implied oral sex scene. Another contender for breaking the f-barrier is a movie version of James Joyce's "Ulysses," also released in 1967.

More Alt History: We were "bitting" about alternate histories novels. A key idea in many of them is that one influential event could go either way, depending on a fluke of one sort or another. These are called jonbar points, and have been since a character named John Barr described them in the 1938 Jack Williamson novel "The Legion of Time." Williamson also coined the terms "genetic engineering" in "Dragon's Island" and "terraforming" in "Seetee Ship."
