Bombshells: In the 1930s, Jean Harlow was the platinum-blonde bombshell who starred in, naturally enough, both "Platinum Blonde" and "Bombshell." In fact, it is because of Jean Harlow that a bombshell, originally something as shattering or devastating as a bomb, came to refer to beautiful women, as well. Another slang word, the notion of being bombed as a synonym for being drunk, probably dates to 1959.

Celebrity Pizza Pitchmen: In 1997, Pizza Hut got former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to appear in a TV commercial with his 10-year-old granddaughter, Anastasia, in which they rejoice in all the chain-restaurant pizza that capitalism can deliver.

Gorby used the money he made to fund his foundation. But he didn't want to shill for anything. Pizza was special. As he explained, "It's not only consumption, it's also socializing."
