Trivia Bits for Friday, October 2

Every Day is a Winding Road: Sheryl Crow's career began, oddly enough, with a stint as a backup singer for Michael Jackson's 18-month "Bad" tour. She had been working as a music teacher in Missouri, taking gigs in the evenings, notably singing ad jingles in the St. Louis basement studio of a friend of hers. She made $40,000 from a McDonald's commercial. Her solo career took off with "Tuesday Night Music Club."

Those Darn Hoi Polloi: The next time you hear somebody complaining about the hoi polloi, with their snobby noses up in the ear, you can really rankle that person by observing that the hoi polloi are actually the unwashed masses.

The expression comes from "hoi" meaning "the" and "polloi" meaning "many" in Greek. We're sure your friend will appreciate your correction.
