Thursday, November 5Tonight is Guy Fawkes Night in Britain, which celebrates the thwarting of Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot in 1605. Fawkes and a group of Catholics wanted to blow up the Houses of Parliament. (At the time, Catholics were severely repressed in England.) Today, the British celebrate with fireworks and by burning effigies called guys. For about a year, "NBC Nightly News With Tom Brokaw" featured a globe that was spinning backward. A viewer noticed and wrote in. It was also during the Brokaw area that NBC News adopted the current theme music. It's called "The Mission," and it was written by John Williams, who is not related to the current host, Brian Williams. Mind you, the theme was updated when Brian Williams took over the show after the 2004 presidential election.
