Ghosts of Hollywood Past: Three Hollywood titans — Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. — made their last silver screen appearance in the same movie, 1981's "Ghost Story," in which they play members of the Chowder Society, who swap ghost stories, only to end up tangling with an actual ghost. The movie was based on a novel of that name, which turned writer Peter Straub into a bookstore superstar.

Drinking Canada Dry: As the name suggests, Canada Dry was invented in Canada, by Ontario pharmacist John McLaughlin, whose brother founded what is now General Motors Canada.

It got a big boost during Prohibition, however, when it was used as a mixer to mask the taste of bathtub booze. Today, the Champagne of Ginger Ales is owned by the same American company that owns 7UP, Snapple and Dr Pepper.
