Friday, December 4Despite its theme of language and class, George Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion" actually debuted not in English, but in German, at the Hofburg Theatre in Vienna. Shaw had written the role of Eliza Doolittle for Mrs. Patrick Campbell, who ended up in a car accident. Combined with other delays, Shaw decided to translate the play himself for the Viennese. It finally was staged in London six months later at His Majesty's Theatre, in a production directed by Shaw himself. The world has a lot of republics, which have no monarchs, and a number of monarchies, which by definition do have monarchs. But it also has three principalities, which are run by princes: Liechtenstein, Andorra and Monaco.
