1. Devils Tower. It is the United States' first national monument.

2. The tar pits are the result of subterranean crude oil seeping upward where it evaporated leaving behind a pond of natural asphalt. Animals trapped in this were preserved for latter-day study by natural scientists.

3. The Petrified Forest in Arizona is not a forest per se, but the trunks of trees washed from other areas. While the forests in southern Montana contain standing trees.

4. Volcanic eruptions that engulfed and preserved the charred trees with their outpouring of lava.

5. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Not surprisingly, the building is known as the Longfellow House —Washington's Headquarters.

6. The North Country National Scenic Trail will run through New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and North Dakota.
