Susan’s unusually deep understanding of singleness began with a sudden catapult into the single world, as young widow and single parent. Woefully unprepared for either role, her nights were battles with insecurity and what-if’s. But when those tigers retreated, in the light of day she surprised herself with daily discoveries of personal strengths. On her own, living out her singleness, she found herself making better judgement calls and wiser choices. The lessons life was tossing her way were at times overwhelming, the teacher not exactly kind. This was an education unlike any she had had, another breed from the classes at Smith College. But from that rough indoctrination came a passion for individuality that translated perfectly into single life – and beyond. Susan’s love affair with undependence has taken many forms:
• The taproot of Deitz’ bond with the single community is ‘Single File’, the advice column featured by the Los Angeles Times Syndicate for over two decades, and currently by Creators Syndicate.
• As part-time professor at the New School in New York City, she led seminars in her curriculum ‘The Art of Living Single’.
• She conceived, created and hosted a weekly 4-hour radio show on station WMCA in New York City.
• She wrote and recorded one-minute scripts on living single for Codart International and did the same for a 900-number telephone project.
• She designed a survey encompassing 6,000 questionnaires that drew 1900 responses – a scope that make its findings (which have been codified) nationally representative of the single population. Its topic is Single Sexuality.
• She was the singles expert (for six years) for the online service Prodigy.
• Her second book was published by St. Martin’s Press, New York City. A bestseller, it went into a second printing and a paperback version.
Susan is currently creating her ‘Single File’ website, for Spring ’07 launch.
