It's Your Day, Gramps: There is Mother's Day and Father's Day. And tomorrow, the first Sunday after Labor Day, is National Grandparents Day. Back in 1978, a West Virginia woman named Marian McQuake was officially recognized by Congress as the founder of National Grandparents Day. Her notion was to provide a way for younger people to recognize the contributions of older people.

The Fall of Quebec: Tomorrow also marks the 250th anniversary of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, when the British forced the French out of Canada. Both opposing generals died in the battle. Generations later, the battle is still a touchy subject in Quebec, where popular pressure forced the cancellation of a reenactment of the battle this year.

Even so, the British were unusually generous to their newly conquered Catholic subjects, allowing them to retain their language and religion. The Irish should have been so lucky.
