Tuesday, January 19There were some strange sitcoms back in the 1980s. One of the odder ones was "Bosum Buddies," in which two men wear drag so they can live in an all-women's hotel. Even odder was that Kip Hunter, aka Buffy, was played by future Oscar winner Tom Hanks, who also had a role as Alex's alcoholic uncle on "Family Ties." Hanks' co-star in "Bosum Buddies," by the way, was Peter Scolari, who went on to a role in "Newhart." Mr. Belvedere's full name was Lynn Aloysius Belvedere. The character actually came from a 1947 novel by Gwen Davenport, in which an arrogant genius signs up as a servant to get fodder for a novel. It became a movie the next year, called "Sitting Pretty," which earned Clifton Webb an Oscar nomination.
