The original "daring young man on the flying trapeze" was Jules Leotard, and he made his debut, 150 years ago today, at the Cirque Napoleon in Paris. He is best known for the tight-fitting garment now named for him, urging men to "put on a more natural garb, which does not hide your best features." He actually called it a maillot, which is what the French now call a bathing suit.

The odds of winning Pennsylvania's $1 Million Blockbuster game, just once, are 1.44 million to one. That's pretty astronomical — so much so that lotteries have been called "a tax on stupidity." The odds of winning twice are an estimated 419 million to one. But in 2005, Donna Goeppert of Bethlehem, Pa., beat those odds when she won the lottery twice.

I wonder if she used her winnings from the first lottery to buy tickets for the second ...
